Actually, it depends on how you perceive it. I do think that your office mate is trying very hard to avoid them, which is not necessary, but again, mixing with fellow Malaysians usually means that you won't get the chance to mix with the locals in NZ, which I thought it's extremely sad, but true. I came here with my partner and with no other friends at all, met with a couple of Malaysians here in NZ who are also new to the country, they treat kiwis as pure acquaintance, nothing more...not to mention people from other countries. Yes, you'll feel more comfortable, but what's the point of studying overseas if so?
There's also a general stereotypical mindset that Malaysian Organization or whatever you call them are full of Malays, naive actually to be honest. So what??? Not racism to be honest, but like you said...mixing with your fellow countrymen makes you more comfortable. Utter bull crap if you ask me. My best Malaysian mate is now a Malay girl who shares the same mindset as me. She even told me that Malays think that she's 'Sombong' just because she mixes with people from other ethnic origin. Same goes to me where I join the Americans for occasional Texas Hold'em, Kiwis for touch rugby and basketball...My so-called Malaysian friends start to think that I am a snob for not joining them for clubbing sessions.
Worst of all, just because of a case or two of racist chants from the drunkards on the streets, they started saying bad things about the Kiwis and even proudly mention about how they screwed Caucasians when they were back in Malaysia. There was a day when me and my partner was watching movie in the common room, full of Kiwis, one of them came in and speak Chinese to us in a loud tone. I have no problem with that, but while watching movie? And speaking your native language in a loud manner? Spare some thoughts please.
Added on March 26, 2008, 8:23 amerm, just something to add on, I've met with a few Muslims from Oman, Indonesia as well as Pakistan. Even though they pray and do pay attention to some religious views, most of them aren't exactly religious as well. I guess that's why they don't bother to buy meats from halal places. Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely no problem with your religion, I'm just sharing my thoughts.
well.. about sombong thingy.. i dont think that is sombong. that's just
having her own life which is what i'm trying to achieve right now.
it's ok if u choose not to join the malaysian society. nothing wrong.. but just dont look down to the people who join it. i join because if it not fellow malaysian and the senior who else gonna help with the halal food especially. and also where to perform the friday prayer.
if general stuff like where to buy kitchen ware etc.. i can just ask the RA.
man.. kene chanted byk kali ngan kiwis

i just ignore ehmm.. worst of it, they not drunk.
and about that eating.. well depends on one's on how to be strict to them self. for me, yes, i'm not that good.. i do bad stuffs.. but at certain point. i care about my food and about my pray..
bcoz pray is the basic of the religion.
there is a different between, sin betwen you and god, and sin between you and another human.

generally, there are wide variations in muslim practices in different parts of the world, and many muslims from other parts of the world are not as strict as msian muslims......don't flame me, this is a fact, and if you have mixed with a broad spectrum of nationalities, you will agree with me......it's the same for other religions as well........

Ok don't flame me here... this is just my take on it.
The problem here is that it's next to impossible to leave Islam in many countries. If you were Buddhist but no longer subscribe to the beliefs, you can leave Buddhism. If you were Christian and decided it's not for you, you can choose to turn your back on it. So the problem of 'Buddhists' and 'Christians' who do things completely against their religions is not so common, simple because those who don't like it just leave and are no longer associated with it. Same for other religions. I know there are exceptions and cultural 'Buddhists' and 'Christians' (those who profess to be so thanks to family etc without actually practicing it) but it's not so much of an issue.
Whereas with Muslims, those who don't believe can't just leave. So they're forced to comply and act Islamic while in Saudi etc but the first chance they get, they're off doing whatever they want. So they're not Muslims at heart, but in name only (cos they have no choice about it).

it happens to other religions too..
evry religions, have their own rules to follow
and it is just the same as others..
it depends, whether they want to obey or break the law..huhu~
from my little knowledge..
for them.. hijab purdah is just a culture for them.. like us wearing baju kurung, sampin...
well.. for me.. eventhough i'm not good,
at least i'm not hurting another human being.
i also sometime didn't participate in usrah/ceramah here... sleep in room
