QUOTE(wkc @ Jun 6 2017, 01:04 PM) Finished completion in end of 2014 when I'd finished my SPM.Was doing high enrollment advertising in 2015, but I didn't join as no interest in China Unis. Then Xiamen officially 2016 open its doors for their first January intake. http://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2015...-visit-from-de/ So if say, is under utilized uni for 2 years. And their first batch of students, is either now completing Foundation or Year 1 programs with MQA tons of it not registered. |

Went there for a visit with my gf who is studying under JPA in Group of 8 Australian university last year. The program advisor tried super hard to poach her (and quite rudely so) by offering full scholarships and accommodation and it seems the first intake was quite bad in terms of numbers.
It's a ghost town there though, huge land for the uni yet only main building is opened. |

Just to correct some misconceptions from other posts in this thread:
1. Lecturing staff in XMU is 80% Malaysian, 20% from the parent campus. However, this doesn't mean the 20% is Chinese - quite a few ang mohs etc. It's part of their aspirations to be an international campus. 2. Facilities are top notch (in comparison to other private universities in Malaysia, local universities still win hands down). 3. First batch of students included a large group of sponsored students from their China campus to provide competition to the locals who are signing up. Many of these students are the cream of the crop in their program, making the environment in XMU fairly competitive. 4. Language of instruction in all courses is English. 5. They have an active research program - lecturers are given a choice of either a research or teaching track with sufficient funding to pursue their interests. |

The entry requirement is just a pass or C. Unlike the parent campus where it is kinda competitive to get in And also unlike Nottingham and Monash where they demand several B's including physics and maths into engineering It is a prestige uni, but sampai malaysia became degree mill hhhmphh |

QUOTE(Subang Nuclear Reactor @ Jun 6 2017, 08:56 PM) They don't even need top students from China to compete That part can't be helped, it's the nature of how private universities in Malaysia operate. It's also worth noting that those B's you mentioned aren't a hard requirement - there are many cases where exceptions are made. Those who are working in the field will know. The entry requirement is just a pass or C. QUOTE(v1n0d @ Jun 6 2017, 08:50 PM) Just to correct some misconceptions from other posts in this thread: You have a connection to the university?1. Lecturing staff in XMU is 80% Malaysian, 20% from the parent campus. However, this doesn't mean the 20% is Chinese - quite a few ang mohs etc. It's part of their aspirations to be an international campus. 2. They have an active research program - lecturers are given a choice of either a research or teaching track with sufficient funding to pursue their interests. Some points: - if they are the cream of the crop, why would they study here? and be taught by 80% Malaysians? - what is their medium of instruction back in China? Is it English? Probably not, but even if it is, Malaysian English is not quite the same. So, can they attract the cream of the crop to learn from lecturers who sound and think differently. Of course, students are willing to learn, but are Malaysian lecturers that attractive? - have you heard a mainland China lecturer speak in English? You may wonder if they are actually speaking English. - all universities try to have an active research program, that's what all the rankings are about. Whether they achieve it or not is a different question. - it's a competitive market in Malaysia, rich students go overseas, the remainder wants the best value for money. Are there enough private fee-paying students? PS: looks like my questions have been answered before I clicked the Submit button. This post has been edited by howszat: Jun 6 2017, 09:19 PM |
