Avoid. Just use TD or IBKR. Rakuten is no way as cheap as TD or IBKR.

The local joint venture with Kenanga, i.e. Rakuten Trade is still profitable, but the Japan head office is not in a good shape.

It's hard to tell and depends on a lot of factors (e.g. the importance of Malaysia market for Rakuten Securities, the margins, cash flows etc.)

Check the finances of your broker first.

It would be easier if your broker is listed publicly and separately (e.g. IBKR, Futu, Tiger, TDA etc.). Kenanga, one of the JV partner in Rakutan Trade is publicly listed in Malaysia, so you know their finances easily. Rakutan Securities Malaysia however is a subsidiary of the Japanese company, so you can't look into specific details about the MY company finances, but the parent company Rakuten Securities has published results for your reference though: https://global.rakuten.com/corp/investors/.

Further up the chain, Rakuten Securities is part of the whole Rakuten Group, so the financial health of the overall group, any scandals or bad news etc., reputation, firm management stuffs may have effects on the securities subsidiary, but influence to what extent really depends on the importance of profit/revenue stream from the securities division to the overall group and also the overall group's business decisions.

It is the later part (business decision) which is mentioned in the article I shared. You can do the maths and check the reports/financial statements to figure out the impact of Rakuten Securities's business on the group.

There's a new competitor in the market, Standard Chartered Smartstocks which seems to offer competitive rates and broader market access

Hi Rakuten,

I am having difficulty subscribing to Maybank DRIP over your website. I suspect it is because your rm10 handling fee having issue.

Anyone managed to subscribe to Maybank DRIP over Rakuten platform?

Replying to my own post. It seems the error is not the rm0 handling fee. It is I need to subscribe fully to the DRIP. ie cannot subscribe non full amount. I tried subscribing all of it and it went through. Strange and now I will have odd lots.

Hi guys, can anyone confirm if the RM10 stamp duty fee for the dividend reinvestment plan is a newly implemented charge? Recall previously for DRIP using Rakuten there were no charges at all.

Yes it is new. But their FAQ still states corporate action is free handling and the latest Maybank DRIP shows 0 amount. Let's see if eventually they will deduct rm10. A bug there that you have to subscribe to the whole drip.

Technically would not be wrong as stamp duty is not handling charges.
Nominee accounts usually have a standalone handling charge.

Even though mine was '0' amount, RM10 was charged to my cash account by Rakuten.

I'm not against the charge, but a heads up that this is coming in would have been nice, instead of finding out when we are trying to participate in any corporate action.

May I know how you know the rm10 was charged? I looked at my transaction history, nothing. Unless they deduct without a record?Need monthly statement to check since I don't remember my initial balance.

On the web portal, under my account, under transaction history, it shows up as a "charge".

Very generic description, but as its RM10, and I'm not expecting any other deductions it had to be the stamp duty charge.

Consider yourself lucky if you weren't charged. biggrin.gif

You able to login to the web portal? As I try to log into the web site from last Friday, they keep saying the rakuten system is under maintenance.

I can only access their I Speed mobile app currently.

Yup, silky smooth. No issues faced at all from Friday onwards.

Try using a different browser or clear cache and try again. Confirmed the system is up and running.

Well for me anyway...
