Chances are, many petite ladies who drive Iriz Premium going to miss the side airbags. Unless as a driver, she adjusted the seat to be in high position. Unfortunately, the front passenger seat is non-adjustable, so as the rear ones.

Kia Rio which is a budget B-segment car also doesn't have many cushion parts (the parts that are inflated) on its side airbags. But the good thing is, those critical cushion parts are located at the right place. Especially, for the rear passengers.

CLEARLY, the side airbag's design in Iriz has a flaw that needs rectification.

1. Good observation. The current side impact test is using EUROSID (EURO Side Impact Dummy), which used European anthropometric data which is not really represent the whole world population. It will be replaced by WorldSID.

2. However, it does not means the iriz airbag need rectification. The shorter you are, the higher the distance between your head and the B-pillar --> you'll be less likely hit by the B-pillar. View the car from front and you'll understand what I mean. For shorter people, the B-pillar will hit the rib first, pushing the head away from B-pillar. (B-Pillar is always designed to be weaker at the base).

As you can see, the top portion of B-pillar is HPF (1500MPa) while the bottom one is Tailor Welded Blank 500MPa steel. This allows pendulum like movement, reducing the B-pillar intrusion around your head. Check the graph, intrusion level (green colored line), if you're taller, you're more susceptible getting hit on the head.

3. The side airbag coverage for the rear passenger is almost 100% of rear door glass due to assumptions the child is placed on the back seat.

4. The airbag is shorter on the longitudinal direction is due to there is no requirement for small overlap test (extra portion of the airbag @ A-pillar is required to cushion the acceleration of head during small overlap test). Refer statement below.

The Camry’s driver airbag and side curtain airbag deployed, but the steering wheel moved so far to the right that the dummy’s head made only minimal contact with the front airbag. The side curtain airbag didn’t extend far enough forward to help prevent the dummy’s head from hitting the instrument panel.

Great explanation there.

Perhaps the only Iriz side impact collision that resulted in death is this one: https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/4186511/all

I wonder what made such accident so fatal in the first place?

It was reported that the two young women died almost instantly due to impact.

For side impact, most of car sold in Malaysia only comply for ece r95, which is using old barrier, with 950kg of weight,50kph impact speed.

In this case. We need to set baseline for the Iriz. Based on the internal crash test of Iriz found on YouTube, on 54 seconds it shows AE MDB side impact test, intended for Euroncap. Which means Iriz is already able to withstand 1300kg of vehicle impact with 50kph.

Using 1300kg and 50kph impact speed as baseline, we can check how much the severity increase if any of 2 parameters changed:
1) if the Audi weight is 1600kg, and the impact speed is still 50kph, the severity increase roughly by 23%
2) if the Audi weight is 1300kg, the impact speed is 60kph (increase mere 10kph) the severity of crash will increase roughly by 44%.
Judging from the condition of the crash, there is high probability that the impact speed is more than 60kph. The report doesn't mention which Audi model. Latest Audi a4 weight around 1400kg, a6 is around 1600kg.
No B segment sedan/compact car will survive this kind on collision especially the one only catered for ece r95. PROBABLY only b segment Suv can survive, due to higher ground clearance. The higher the ground clearance, the higher the chance that the other car will hit the rocker of the car, thus more energy can be absorbed.
