1. Good observation. The current side impact test is using EUROSID (EURO Side Impact Dummy), which used European anthropometric data which is not really represent the whole world population. It will be replaced by WorldSID.

2. However, it does not means the iriz airbag need rectification. The shorter you are, the higher the distance between your head and the B-pillar --> you'll be less likely hit by the B-pillar. View the car from front and you'll understand what I mean.  For shorter people, the B-pillar will hit the rib first, pushing the head away from B-pillar. (B-Pillar is always designed to be weaker at the base).

As you can see, the top portion of B-pillar is HPF (1500MPa) while the bottom one is Tailor Welded Blank 500MPa steel. This allows pendulum like movement, reducing the B-pillar intrusion around your head. Check the graph, intrusion level (green colored line), if you're taller, you're more susceptible getting hit on the head.

3. The side airbag coverage for the rear passenger is almost 100% of rear door glass due to assumptions the child is placed on the back seat.

4. The airbag is shorter on the longitudinal direction is due to there is no requirement for small overlap test (extra portion of the airbag @ A-pillar is required to cushion the acceleration of head during small overlap test). Refer statement below.

Great explanation there.

Perhaps the only Iriz side impact collision that resulted in death is this one: https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/4186511/all

I wonder what made such accident so fatal in the first place?

It was reported that the two young women died almost instantly due to impact.

there was a fatal accident in Kuala Pilah this morning. The Preve driver died..  ohmy.gif
can an unbuckled rear passenger cause so much damage?  unsure.gif

Yes. The inertia of the rear passenger without seatbelt can have devastating impact on the front passenger.

I assume this is the “skidded mark” as pointed by the yellow arrow.

My theory goes that this lorry hit the Persona head on at that mark. It then dragged this persona about 2 meters rearward. The lorry then swerved to the left and hit the tree before it stopped.

Imagine that Persona was yours. Seeing a 10-tonnes lorry charging towards you face on. Your family was in the car. The wife must be screaming “Ya Allah… abang… Ya Allah….” while holding your hand tight. Your children were crying in fear at the rear seat. They too were screaming "Ayah!!!... Ayahhhhh!!!... Ayahhhh!!!".

While you were holding the steering and trying to control the car’s movement. Your foot jammed the brake pedal very hard. Then you realize there’s nothing you can do. The force from the lorry is too great to resist. You keep praying that the car’s body doesn’t collapse, killing you and everyone else in the car.

You tried hard to maintain your composure. But the crying and screaming intensified. "Abang!!!!! Ya Allahhhhhhhh!!!! Allah!!!!!!!!! Allahhhhhhhh!!!!" "Ayah!!!!... Ayahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!".

You started to break down. You finally shed tears. Deep inside you feel that today is your last day. Your mind started to imagine very vividly the whole family being transported by the villagers to the grave. You and the family being buried in the same burial ground (liang lahad).

After a few seconds of hellish experience that feels like hours. It's all over. You held your wife and kids trying to calm them down. You opened the car's door. At that moment you just realized that everyone in the car is safe. Your knee feels very weak. You fell on your knee and started to prostrate and you repeatedly saying "Alhamdulillah Ya Allah.... Alhamdullilah......"

Tears started to flow continuously down your cheek. You give thanks to God for guiding you in His destiny (Taqdir) that you chose a safe car for the family. You feel very deeply that it was a decision that changes today's history. You feel that it could have been different.

SOMETIMES THE MOMENT THAT NEVER HAPPENS. MATTERS THE MOST.

Kid: I don’t know what’s going to happen.
Mother: Yeah, you do. You CAN DECIDE!
Kid: So, I can decide?
Mother: Yeah, you’re in control. Imagine that.

PROTON marketing team is idiot! They should have dramatize this kind of accident and make it an ads. Show it on TV primetime slot, televise it nationwide. Share it on Youtube, Twitter, Instagram. Capture the hearts and feelings of the people. Make them feel that SAFETY MATTERS.

Not some video with blank steel with "HPF" labels here and there, and then the firemen trying to cut it. What the hell is that? Don't show people what HPF is, show them what it can do.

Look how Volvo did
