there was a fatal accident in Kuala Pilah this morning. The Preve driver died..  ohmy.gif
can an unbuckled rear passenger cause so much damage?  unsure.gif
*
Yes. The inertia of the rear passenger without seatbelt can have devastating impact on the front passenger.

I assume this is the “skidded mark” as pointed by the yellow arrow.

My theory goes that this lorry hit the Persona head on at that mark. It then dragged this persona about 2 meters rearward. The lorry then swerved to the left and hit the tree before it stopped.

Imagine that Persona was yours. Seeing a 10-tonnes lorry charging towards you face on. Your family was in the car. The wife must be screaming “Ya Allah… abang… Ya Allah….” while holding your hand tight. Your children were crying in fear at the rear seat. They too were screaming "Ayah!!!... Ayahhhhh!!!... Ayahhhh!!!".

While you were holding the steering and trying to control the car’s movement. Your foot jammed the brake pedal very hard. Then you realize there’s nothing you can do. The force from the lorry is too great to resist. You keep praying that the car’s body doesn’t collapse, killing you and everyone else in the car.

You tried hard to maintain your composure. But the crying and screaming intensified. "Abang!!!!! Ya Allahhhhhhhh!!!! Allah!!!!!!!!! Allahhhhhhhh!!!!" "Ayah!!!!... Ayahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!".

You started to break down. You finally shed tears. Deep inside you feel that today is your last day. Your mind started to imagine very vividly the whole family being transported by the villagers to the grave. You and the family being buried in the same burial ground (liang lahad).

After a few seconds of hellish experience that feels like hours. It's all over. You held your wife and kids trying to calm them down. You opened the car's door. At that moment you just realized that everyone in the car is safe. Your knee feels very weak. You fell on your knee and started to prostrate and you repeatedly saying "Alhamdulillah Ya Allah.... Alhamdullilah......"

Tears started to flow continuously down your cheek. You give thanks to God for guiding you in His destiny (Taqdir) that you chose a safe car for the family. You feel very deeply that it was a decision that changes today's history. You feel that it could have been different.

SOMETIMES THE MOMENT THAT NEVER HAPPENS. MATTERS THE MOST.

Kid: I don’t know what’s going to happen.
Mother: Yeah, you do. You CAN DECIDE!
Kid: So, I can decide?
Mother: Yeah, you’re in control. Imagine that.

PROTON marketing team is idiot! They should have dramatize this kind of accident and make it an ads. Show it on TV primetime slot, televise it nationwide. Share it on Youtube, Twitter, Instagram. Capture the hearts and feelings of the people. Make them feel that SAFETY MATTERS.

Not some video with blank steel with "HPF" labels here and there, and then the firemen trying to cut it. What the hell is that? Don't show people what HPF is, show them what it can do.

Look how Volvo did

SPINAL INJURY - A COMMON TYPE OF INJURY IN RUN-OFF ROAD ACCIDENT

user posted image

A VOLVO SOLUTION:

The new 2015 Volvo XC90 features a world-first solution that addresses accidental road departure. The functionality detects what is happening and the front safety belts are tightened to keep the occupants in position. The belts are firmly tightened as long as the car is in motion. To help prevent spine injuries, an energy-absorbing functionality between the seat and seat frame cushions the vertical forces that can occur when the car encounters a hard landing in the terrain. The solution is capable of reducing the vertical occupant forces by up to one third. The video illustrates the basic principles of the world first run-off road protection technologies.

SMALL OVERLAP CRASH

The small overlap crash test simulates what happens when a vehicle stray over the center line and hits the oncoming vehicle in the corner. Or the corner of the vehicle hits a tree or a pole.

The starting point for protecting people in any type of crash is to keep the occupant space intact. If the structure holds up well, the space around the occupants is maintained and that allows the seatbelts and the airbags to do their job and prevent injuries.

A small overlap crash can be devastating because often the main structural elements of the vehicle are bypassed.

If the vehicle is not designed for this, that can lead to massive collapse of the occupant’s compartment and a big reduction in survival space.

The small overlap front crash test represents a front crash that almost didn’t occur. Only the front corner of the vehicle crashes against its crash partner, whether that’s another vehicle, a tree, or a pole.

About 25% of the deaths and serious injuries that occur in front crashes among new vehicles are small overlap front crashes.

Vehicles earning marginal and poor ratings in the small overlap front crash test won’t protect their occupants in some front crashes. The chief problem is a structure that collapses, which in some cases defeats the airbags ability to protect the driver’s head.

The small overlap frontal crash test represents when the left front corner of the vehicle strikes either another vehicle or a fixed object such as a tree or utility pole. Small overlap crashes are pretty challenging to vehicle structures.

The small overlap frontal crash test is a front crash of the vehicle against a rigid barrier, but only a small portion of the front end contacts the barrier. In this type of crash, we see lots of intrusion of the occupant compartment if it’s not strong enough and sometimes because of the off-center forces, we see movement of the occupants inside that are a challenge for the restraint systems.

A strong occupant compartment structure is an important aspect of small front overlap crash protection.

Modern vehicles offer very good protection in a wide range of crashes, despite that fact, we see a large number of people being seriously injured and killed in frontal crashes. So we are challenging vehicle manufacturers to come up with designs that offer protection in this crash mode as a way of reducing the toll of frontal crashes on today’s highways.

The front small overlap crash test is more demanding of vehicles' crashworthiness than the flat barrier used by the government or the moderate overlap crash test conducted by the Institute since 1995.

The front small overlap crash test is challenging for a lot of new vehicle designs, but automakers realize that safety is a key selling point, so they’re all making changes to improve crashworthiness to earn good ratings in this test.

These [crash test] results indicate how well these vehicles would protect you in a crash where only a small portion of the front end of the vehicle is involved.

These small overlap crashes are responsible for about 25% of the serious injuries and fatalities in the United States.

Modern vehicles have front structures designed to absorb crash energy and keep intrusion away from the occupant’s compartment.

In small overlap crashes, unless a manufacturer designs for it, those structures get bypassed and all of the crash energy moves rearward hitting the occupant’s compartment and often leading to massive amounts of intrusion.

Front small overlap crashes are especially tough on minivans. That’s because they’re typically built on car frames but they’re wider and heavier. So more of their structure is located outboard of the energy absorbing frame rails.

The Nissan Quest is one of the worst performing vehicles we’ve ever seen in the small front overlap crash test. The structure collapsed like a house of cards. This point here moves nearly two feet toward the driver, trapping its left leg between the seat and the instrument panel. We had to cut the seat out in order to remove the dummy and then we needed a crowbar to pry the right foot out. Not surprisingly the forces measured on the left leg were so high that a real person experiencing that would be lucky ever to walk normally again.

Good point.

I believe old Proton Saga like that one is worst that current Perodua's line up when it comes to crashworthiness.

Even Preve doesn't' stand much chance. But for the accident below, the driver was safe.
