Already arranged with the Mediaplex folks for our own outing. Watching this tomorrow, the day after and of course the weekends, with different sets of friends. Summer movies are upon us. After 300, it shall be Bridge to Terabithia.
Still have my inside contact to get early ticket bookings like i did pre-PSP-breakup. For the record, i've arranged the Ep. III ROTS in BTS for the Premiere class(booked entire theatre) and 100+ attendee for Matrix Revolutions. Also have the "Just Like You Imagined" music track from Nine Inch Nails from the "300" trailing running in my room now, will be the ringtone for my phone throughout "300" week. Well String, do let us know how badly the show is censored, cause I have a feeling that would be lots!

That song is the one playing in the "300" trailer, so you should have an idea how it sounds like. Fits the rebellious mood of the Spartans as well.
As for the censoring, im due to head to Adelaide, my favourite cinema-watching nightstop in in 2 weeks. Watching this in the Director's Chair there, or their Half-pipe cinema UNCENSORED will be the highlight of my plans there. Those who are eager to watch this uncensored but closer to home, may head to GV (TGV's equivalent in Singapore) on their MAX session there. Watch a couple of my movies there, and they were not censored. I was supposed to go there today as well as part of attending the PS3 SG launch, but plan scrapped due to the ones going with me unable to secure leave. Addendum: From the press screening, it was reported that the sex scenes were cut to a minimum, but brutalities remain intact. That remains to be seen tomorrow when iget to to see it the first time. FYI, this movie receive a standing ovation during its world premiere in Berlin when it first screened. This post has been edited by stringfellow: Mar 7 2007, 10:58 PM |

Too many places to edit from. The guitar riff? The piano solo? Definitely in the middle of the song though, where the guitar riffs are heavier.Try at 2:25 onwards. Also try from 3:00 onwards if you like the violins in as well.

Yeah Singapore doesn't censor anymore, but I wouldn't go across the causeway to watch a movie.
But... since the violent bits still intact, that's good. |

The sex scenes are supposedly noteworthy too. Let's just say they dont do it "the conventional way", rather using different......."entrance", for the lack of a better word. Whether it was merely referenced or descriptively visual, i wouldnt know, until the Bluray comes out.
There was a better movie than "300" that had screened internationally but swept under the rug here for its "artistic" nuances rather than its commercial value, the movie is called "Pan's Labyrinth". Watching this as well in Adelaide, this is a fairy tale for grown ups. Violence is only part of the recipe here. Hamster, im not good at anything. I'd rather not try my hands on anything meant for public display. Keeping things to myself more these days, more fun while less painful comments from others. Arj, why not join those folks at Cineleisure? This post has been edited by stringfellow: Mar 7 2007, 11:19 PM |

300 seconds of 300: 300 seconds of Mayhem . Watch 5 minutes of 300 EXCLUSIVE on MTV Overdrive!
Added on March 8, 2007, 12:51 amDisclaimer: Warning, certain scenes in the 300 seconds might not suite the effeminate tastes of modern metrosexual excuse we call men these days, so exercise caution if you are squeamish of gory graphic scenes. Added on March 8, 2007, 12:58 amMay i suggest, when the dialogue in the movie goes this way:- Persian emissary: "This is madness!" then it is the cue for EVERYONE in the movie theatre to scream.... Everyone in the cinema hall: This is SPARTA! Other variations like This is Pasta!, This is Butter!, or other similarly sounding syllables are most welcomed to be uttered as well. Damn, if the crowd watching with me tomorrow is sporting as hell, the halls will be reverberating with the cries for Sparta! This post has been edited by stringfellow: Mar 8 2007, 12:58 AM |

Again, reminder, this is the scene im talking about:-
It's very quick, very spontaneous, and didnt have the Nine Inch Nails song in the background to inspire your roar....but get ready when the emissary says "This is blasphemy, this is madness!" .....all together now......This is Sparta!. Stand up and kick the ones seated infront of you if you must, to show your support. See you at the movies! Disclaimer: I am not responsible for the scuffles, fights and the eventual chaos that ensues should the patrons you've kicked decides to kick you back, nor am i responsible if the rest of those watching the movie decides to go Persian on your arse and overwhelm you like how the Spartan were. |

From cinemaonline.com:
QUOTE Avid cinema fans would also be reading about the touching love scene between Leonidas and her queen - and the nude Oracle scene - which had been exorcised from our cinemas. But never mind, there are enough thrills and spills and eye candy here for fans of Frank Miller to enjoy on the big screen. "300" is a visual feast that should excite our senses. Cinema.my And quoted from comingsoon.net: "(Make sure to stick around once it's over for some of the coolest blood-splattering end credits you've ever seen.)" |

Overall, very little censorship. And about the "THIS IS SPARTAN" warcry (as stated by string), dont immediately shout after the black guy said "This is madness". Wait for awhile and when the camera turn to Leonidas... shout it |

Posting from Mediaplex, 300 is awesome! There are are a couple of censored scenes but all of them are sexually related. IIANM, all of the gory battle scenes are INTACT! I was pleasantly surprised that those decapitation scenes went intact without a single cut! Usually scenes like these are a big NO with the censorship board but even where the camera lingers in slow-mo showing close-up details on severed arms, legs and heads rolling, were shown in its glorious gory detail!
The censored scenes were:- » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Otherwise, the movie is perfect! Go watch it N6w! |

Im sorry if i have offended anyone in this thread with my enthusiasm for this movie. Im just encited of the movie and just wanted to share. If my overexcitedness of plugging this movie annoys anyone, please forgive me.
Im more than happy to organize a movie event of this movie on behalf of the community. It is just that i have this incessant feeling that it wouldnt happen the way i see it would be if my name is tied to any of the event. Something about my name seems to turn people off, not to mention the underlying hatred that comes with the username Stringfellow. If anyone still want an event about this movie, i can still organize a bulk buy with my insider contacts ,i could arrange for a bulk ticket order for either Midvalley, TGV KLCC or book the entire Premiere class in BTS if the crowd here want me to arrange it. I am up to the task, just wondering if my offer means anything here. Still in Mediaplex here, will be going with the guys here for our own outing. Sorry again if i have offended anyone here. The offer is genuine, drop me a line/PM/post if anyone wants a movie event outing organized for 300, or any other future outing. |

I've seen younger-than-18 able to enter the halls here in KLCC for this movies. Just simply sneak in when the counter states you can enter with other movies that are rated U.
Phewww, just came back for second helping of 300, weird how the audience are more reactive at a midnight show than the ones earlier. Had them hooting, cheering and even clapping when » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « , and also a couple of scattered applause when the movie ended. When the lights are on, then i know why....those clapping are a group of young Americans whom earlier visited and ohh-ahh at the screen when they came over to see Motorstorm running in Mediaplex...very talkative bunch...There i go, talked too much again! Mind the spoilers if you have not watched the movie, you have been warned. More Spartan action today(Friday) with different set of friends, they are Frank Miller fans. Gonna gather up in Kinokuniya KLCC for a refresher of "300" on hardcover comic book version if they have any, before heading to the cinema hall. This is Sparta! |

OT: I dunno why but everytime i masok cinema, the guy behind sure kick my chair one. Dunno why...damn tulan. But during 300 not so bad. The guy adjust his legs rarely so kena kick about 4-5 times only during movie. Some movies ar....diuu.....ppl can shake leg and kick your back for the whole movie one. Sometimes i tell them off but they still do it. Maybe use vibrator too much or something. Sigh. |

WolfX , movie buff here. Can watch multiple times and still see something new in the film. Are you familiar with Moviemistakes.com?
Great movie outing as well with the gang today, me being a Frank Miller newbie, of course get bombarded by trivias and tidbits of infos from the gang when i watch with these diehard FM fans. First they would mention would be, "Spartans in "300" the comic rendition are naked, save for their capes". Imagine THAT on the movie version, and you'll never see "300" arriving at our shores. The offer to organize still remains, im genuinely offering my service to do so if anyone's interested. Mediaplex apparently had connections with TGV KLCC, and if you notice the seats from Cinema 1 and Cinema 2, you will know why. They were the supplier of the cinema seats for the newly renovated seats in these halls, as well as the sole distributors of the longthrow projectors in all the halls in TGV KLCC. These projectors are 720p by specifications, with of cource mad-crazy lumens compared to home projectors. The TGV administrations even provide added privileges such as free movie tickets for Mediaplex staff to cultivate and keep their interest in the movie business . Hence how i could secure large number of tickets early with good positions in the cinema halls for groups yesterday and today, thanks to Mediaplex. So again, i reiterate, if anyone wants bulk numbers for official or to represent a large number of specific groups (no "gatherings for my family, or my close friends kinda type, please), i can try my best to arrange so. We should consider how lucky we are, for the fact that even the Americans have yet to see this movie and we already have seen Day 3 screening of this great movie. *Today, Friday 9th in the US/10th in our country, is the US screening day FYI.* The folks at Boxofficemojo.com have barely begun tracking the movie, only parting predictions on how much this movie would make with its "R" rating.

ARRGGHH!! In the hardbound copy of "300" owned by one of the attendee of the movie event yesterday, the Spartans are drawned with the same strokes as how Sin City looked like, with ....ermm, clearly outlined rendition of their private parts. Wikipedia shows what the Battle of Thermopylae looked like in all naked glory. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Jacques...s_David_004.jpg QUOTE(vivaldi @ Mar 10 2007, 11:07 PM) Still enjoyable, trust me. You will get the subtleties previously overwhelmed by the visuals onscreen like the narrating voice of Dilios, and you will get their names better. Ephialtes, Queen Gorgo, Theron, Stelios, Astinos, Thermopylae, Plataea, Arcadians. Leonidas's son is played by the director's son i believe, same surname. Did anyone notice the Spartans advance by rank, one row does the pushing and thrusting, then when more waves advances too close, the second rom comes forward and drop their shields to protect their previously exposed comrades? Very efficient. Also notice the "phalanx" formation they made during the second wave of the first battle, as well as the "turtle dome" during the last confrontation with Xerxes. So, Vivaldi, yes, watch it the third time. More trivias on the movie, the guys at Boxofficemojo.com forum has this dug up:- http://news.fantasymoguls.com/originalcont...ve_early_1.html QUOTE EXCLUSIVE EARLY 3-DAY ESTIMATES: '300' with $60 million; Spartan War Epic 3rd Biggest R-Rated Opening and 2nd Biggest March Opening; 'Hogs' Still Strong with $27.8 million Bear in mind, "300" is rated R in the States, so it is not meant to break boxoffice records like family-friendly and U-to-PG13 movies like Pirates of Carribean. And also "300" had just its first day opening yesterday.by Steve Mason March 10, 2007 The weekend belongs to Zack Snyder's 300 (Warner Bros), which is fulfilling the months of internet buzz, marketing hype and fanboy anticipation with a $25.5 million Friday and an estimated 3-day gross of $60 million. The bloody, violent, over-the-top, R-rated war picture adapted from Frank Miller's graphic novel got an early start with 12:01am screenings across the country including IMAX locations. My sources have indicated that 300 broke the midnight IMAX box office record set by last Summer's Superman Returns, another Warner Bros. release. 300 will almost certainly smash the opening weekend IMAX record of $5 million set by Superman Returns. Batman Begins, also from Warner Bros., is the 3rd best IMAX opening weekend with $3.1 million. If my numbers for this Spartan war epic hold, this will be the all-time 3rd best opening weekend for an R-rated movie: 1. The Matrix Reloaded - $91.7 million 2. Passion of the Christ - $83.8 million 3. 300 - $60 million 4. Hannibal - $58 million 5. 8 Mile - $51.2 million By Monday morning, 300 will also be the all-time 2nd best opening weekend for a March release trailing only Ice Age 2: The Meltdown: 1. Ice Age 2: The Meltdown - $68 million 2. 300 - $60 million 3. Ice Age - $46.3 million The poorly-reviewed Wild Hogs (Buena Vista) will take the #2 spot with $7.5 million on Friday. That should translate to a far better-than-expected 3-day of $27.8 million. Bridge To Terabithia (Buena Vista) added $1.7 million to kick-off the weekend and will have banked another $7.4 million by Monday morning good for 3rd. Ghost Rider (Sony) will finish 4th with an estimated $7 million after the Nicolas Cage vehicle picked up $1.9 million Friday. Meanwhile, David Fincher's Zodiac (Paramount) continues to disappoint with $1.9 million Friday and an estimated $6.6 million for the weekend, which is enough to round out the Top 5. Less talk, more fight! This is Sparta!
What were those makciks expecting, Huss? A campfire movie with half-naked men singing and dancing around a bonfire? Wrong movie! Plus they saw the movie trailer already, and they should have avoided it if they are going to shield their eyes from watching it. For the first time, i have faith in our censorship board to grow out of their protective shell and relax the guntings and consider functional and artistic values of a movie. Kudos to the censorship board for finally growing up! The Persian pondans right, there is this beast with head of a goat, everyone in the cinema halls were muttering "WTF is that!?", some laughed at the WTF-ness of that scene. I have no complaints on th sensuous dancers. This post has been edited by stringfellow: Mar 11 2007, 12:50 AM |

From PhoenixDark of NeoGAF:-
QUOTE Just got back from the movie. HOLY SHIT I intended on going to the 10:15 showing, and got there around 9:35. Once I drove past the window I could see a massive amount of people in line. At first I thought they were there to see something else, but rather quickly it became clear that the majority of the crowd was there for 300. The 10:15 showing was sold out, so I had to go to the 10:45. The crowd was huge, and luckily I was first in line to pick the best seat (middle seat in the middle row=you see everything). People laughed at the funny lines and actually cheered during some scenes (like the one where the queen shows her Spartan side, with a sword). On a funny note...there was this guy sniffing throughout some of the movie. It was mainly audable during the more quiet, emotional parts of the movie. Because of this it sounded like he was crying or something. So out of nowhere this dude right behind me yells out. Dude: NO CRYING ALLOWED IN SPARTA Sniffling Guy: I have a cold mother****er Dude: THIS IS MADNESS Stringfellow's own note: This is the perfect timing for that sniffing dude to scream "This is Sparta!" I felt the movie was amazing. I went in expecting an extremely gratuitous, over the top epic and that's what I got. What I was most surpised at was that the acting and dialogue wasn't nearly as cheesy as I expected. Like many fantasty epics, the movie is full of various speeches, and all of them are great. But I didn't go to the movie for speeches, I went for the AWESOME-ness. The action was simply amazing. I loved the slow motion mechanics used throughout the movie. All of the battles are not slow motion, though: there is a nice mix between some more shaky cam sequences and some slow motion sequences; clearly the slow motion sequences are featured more. The battle with the Immortals (and that giant thing) was truly the highlight of the action for me. Perfectly executed I never read the graphic novel so I don't know how truthful it was to the source material, but I found it to be rather truthful to various facets of history. The way the Spartans fought was pretty damn accurate, and seeing it brought to life was quite impressive. Overall I found the movie to be just what I was looking for: a BADASS kick in the balls. The action was tight, the story was badass, and the music was very good. Perhaps my only complaints outside of the dramatic acting (which I anticipated) was the lack of character development. I love watching epics like Jason and the Argonauts or Clash of the Titans, and these movies usually introduce a cast of characters who you can't help but root for and hope they survive. While this was done with a couple characters to a certain degree, I would have liked to see more. Hot damn, i wish that had happened, then a real life enactment of everyone in the cinema hall screaming "This is SPARTA!" would had happened! One thing i am disappointed about Malaysian audience is that we are not culturally inclined to express ourselves openly. Overseas audiences are not shy to show their appreciation of great movies by clapping, cheering and reacting to emotive scenes. The Persian pondan brough visions of Ra and the other Pharaohs from StarGate though. Same shaven eyelashes, and makeups, as well as the obviously deepened baritone voice. That's why i said, Malaysians moviegoers are timid and afraid to express themselves.
The most i see Malaysians do is laugh, that's considered normal and acceptable. Sigh...... On other things, congratulations on your Def Jam Icon celeb status, bukan selalu dapat Malaysian hanging on to the top spot of any leaderboard. Funny when you think of it though. How would the censorship board know if the lesbian scene would offend viewers here, if viewers here dont know what a lesbian scene is? And if viewers here do KNOW what lesbian scenes are, obviously you dont HAVE to censor it out, since we are familiar with what a lesbian scene is anyway, and not particularly disturbed by it, isnt it? Get the logic?
WE are obviously still children to the eyes of the government, hence why we are treated this way. |

^yea the arrows scene damn funny
The goat scene was seriously wtf scene la Sparta's councilmen were damn dumb, 1 guy started shouting "traitor" and the rest followed and didn't do anything to help the Spartans in the war My fav line in the movie was when the queen said:" Only women in Sparta give birth to real men" Awesome |

My favourite lines would be when the Spartans were "cleaning up" (read: killing the dying) while Leonidas was eating an apple.
Spartan Captain: You know, our Greek friends are dying to have a piece of the action. *stabs a dying Persian on the ground* Leonidas: *while munching apple* Tell Daxos to gather 20 of his men, able, ready and sober. Stringfellow's note *Stelios comes running down to Leonidas, out of breath* Stelios: King Leonidas! *breathing heavily* Leonidas: Calm down boy, breath easy. Stelios: *after a moment's pause of steady breathing* The Persian army advances. A contingent. Too small for a charge. Leonidas: *Looks at his Captain* I leave the company at your charge. *smiling* Spartan Captain: But, my King...! Leonidas: Do not worry, my friend. If they assasinate me, entire Sparta will go to war. Pray.....that they are that stupid. Pray........we are that lucky. *Stringfellow's note: How bloody nonchalant is THAT! Selamba AND awesome at the same time! Leonidas walks up the hill and continues.. Leonidas: *talks with his mouth full munching apple* Besides....there is no reason we cannot be civil about this, cant we? *Stringfellow's note: THIS is the BEST LINE DELIVERED in the movie for me! Leonidas talks about being civil and diplomatic, yet his act of talking with his mouth full clearly belies his intention of being as "Spartan" as he can be. Funny and fcuk-i-dont-a-damn attitude at the same time! *Leonidas throws his remaining apple to Stelios who takes his bite in laughing.* Spartan Captain: Yes, my King. *stabs another dying Persian on the ground* That entire sequence is the best in the movie for me. Of course, the action sequences are God-awesome, but when it comes to spoken dialogues, that sequence i described there, together with "This is blasphemy this is madness.....This is Sparta!" and "Spartans, prepare your breakfast and eat hearty, for tonight, we dine in HELL!" ranks up there as the most memorable dialogues in the movie for me. P/S: The "Tonight, we dine in Hell!" line is technically inaccurate. Greeks followling their mythologies would say, "Tonight, we dine in Hades!" and not Hell, but since the movie is refreshed to reflect modern definitions, Hell replaces Hades. There might be those who had no brush with anything Greek mythos, that wouldnt have a clue what Hades is. |

I heard there is one for the PSP but no news on any game for the 360. One would have thought if they wanted to have one, it would already be released by now.
Never know, could be released in time for the DVD |

There is one more part I laugh and was like ... O.O"
Remember the Capn's son head got cut off? Guess who it was? It was Gandalf on his white horse. I laugh and laughed cause why suddenly got white horse one. Gandalf must be rushing off somewhere. Need to get to Roshan.... starts slicing everyone around him. |

Stick, Gandalf, Roshan (It's Rohan, not Roshan btw)? Wrong movie! This is about blood-splattering, war-mongering, roar-inducing, testosterone-filling, all-out, balls-out non-stop REAL MEN beating and butchering the $hit out of their nemesis! This is not LOTR, mentioning LOTR is the same name of 300 is blasphemy, this is madness! This is SPARTA!
News from the weekend boxoffice tally, "300" sets a new all-time record of March opening weekend, with USD71million, obliterating Ice Age II that made USD68mil a year back. An R rated movie butchering a kid-friendly U rated flick? That is testament to the might of Sparta! "300" is also the third highest opening weekend movie after "MAtrix Reloaded" and "Passion of Christ", and "300" also would have made its entire budget, which is USD60mil in its opening weekend alone, with USD11mil as profit already. "300" also blew past its other Frank Miller brethren, "Sin City" in boxoffice collection is its 3 day weekend numbers alone, and is projected to continue its boxoffice run past USD200mil. Enviable achievement for an R rated movie, and it was said that "300" helped other U-rated movies like "Wild Hogs" and "Bridge to Terabithia" since pre-teens under 18 uses tickets bought for these movies to sneak into watching "300". This is a common practice in US cinemas. This post has been edited by stringfellow: Mar 14 2007, 01:43 PM |

Anyone who loved the movie should definitely check out Miller's graphic novel - not to mention if you collect the Sin City series you'll see a little shameless plug by Miller for 300 (the novel).
In any case, excellent excellent stuff. Only pity was there isn't a comparable game on 360 for me to go slash in aftewards. Even the wife loved the flick! |

Interestingly enough, there is now an anti-300 propaganda saying that the movie is Pro American.
And also the fact they potrayed Persians wrongly... when will people realise that movies are meant for entertainment and stop looking into it so much.. By the way, i think this is the most off-topic conversation in the 360 that has bypassed the mods |

If they weere complaining that Persians were portrayed wrongly, that is the most laughable whining i have ever heard. They nitpick on that small iissue, when the biggest issue of all left unattended: The Battle of Thermopylae itself! Spartan wear nothing but bronze helmets at the battle, why didnt complain about that in the movie? The Battle was more brutally described in the archives of history than what portrayed in the movie, why no complains? Have we as human beings, become so engrossed with the more fickle side of things , that we lose sight of the bigger goals? And WTF is with that Pro-American bullcrap? You can easily say that the Persians now represent American-invading armies of Iraq, while the Spartan represents the liberating Iraqi, how's that? Why must every medium be propagandized into something political? Why cant these people enjoy the movie for what it is actually is: A medium of story telling and entertainment, without looking for hidden messages and subcounscious brainwashings?
Sorry for getting off a bit there, but i get pissed off when people read too much into what supposed to be a pre-summer popcorn flick, and refuse to watch it on that ridiculous grounds. Those ranting were also directed towards the people you mentioned, Zio, not to you. Kudos to you to report this, im surprised these people could still tie in politic with such a simple action flick. |

Yeah, I remember this almost ruined my breakfast when my wife called me at work and told me how the Iranians are reacting.
Sickens me, really - I mean, I understand everyone has a right to be upset about something or other, but it's a freakin movie? What next? PETA coming up and complaining that the Ewoks are derogatory towards bears? |

It's a movie based on a retelling of history, adapted and modernized by the pages of Frank Miller's work in 300 The Graphic Novel. The author takes his own liberties when describing what's Persian and what's Greek. Take it as that, simple. In fact, modern Persians and Greeks would be grateful that people are intrigued to know the retelling of their ancient history, rather than it remained within the dust-laden confines of a forgotten section in a library. Sure, it is hyper-realized, it is stylized , and it is changed, it is a freaking ADAPTATION of history retold. It has gone through time, nobody but the real participants of the battle would really know what happened there. All we have to rely on are scriptures and stories retold, and stories retold have the effect being exaggerated and altered to suit the context of the storyteller and the period of time it's being retold. Not a surprise that modern storytellers like Frank Miller tells this story as it is now in "300", im sure his intentions are for the audience to remember the main gist of the battle and the reasons why it is fought. It's sad that the audience nowadays are more readily tie things to politics and nitpicking small details than reflecting on the real message the movie wants to put across.

Anyway... I've read the graphic novel, and it seems the movie has more depth compare to the graphic novel... |

Of course the movie has a little more depth. It's been stretched to fill the 2 hour slot - whereas the graphic novel admittedly is a slim volume.
On the flip side Sin City the movie managed to condense 3-4 volumes of the graphic novels into one movie, and THAT is an impressive feat. |

Well... with Sin City 2 coming in and it will be "A Dame to Kill For" story... did you know that Rachel Weisz is going to be star as Ava?
On another note... and it's sad that we never get a chance to watch it in our own Malaysian shores... Zack Snyder (director of 300) was given greenlight to direct Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon's Watchmen... a teaser clip was shown in the newly 300 extended trailer... |

So how is it a 'retelling of history' when the portrayal of a particular culture is wrong? It is a comic adaptation. And the storyline of the comic itself (like all graphic novels and comics) is really based very loosely on actual facts, with a heavy dose of fact-twisting in play (I am an avid comic/graphic novel reader myself). People are incensed with the movie not because of what they are wearing, as your earlier example, but rather the portrayal of a particular mindset that wasn't true. As to your assertion that it is not political - modern propaganda machines are far more subtle than your typical Stalinistic efforts. I am now in a position where I deal daily with older teens, and I can safely say that a mindset bred on Hollywood movies and MTV doesn't really add much to the grey matter, nor do they possess the capability of separating the impression gained on a certain topic in the movies, from actual fact. One can identify that a particular movie isn't actually factual, but the deeper psychological effect that takes root is harder to identify and it most often results in shaping one's idea of a certain topic - isn't that what propaganda is all about? Additionally, as someone who is fortunate enough to be in the know of certain political agendas, I can most certainly say that EVERYTHING is political (not only in ours). A tool is a tool, regardless of whether it is a movie shown to the public. Taking entertainment as just that, is a fallacy. You can disagree all you want, which you will doubtlessly do in the next few posts, but until I see sociological, psychological and political studies/reports that tell me differently, I will be inclined to hold a contrarian view to yours. Have a nice day. |

Everything can be considered political but on which side the movie will lean towards depends on the perspective that you are looking at.
Calling 300 a pro-American agenda is one narrow way of looking at it, because it can be easily swung the other way around as well. And until a study tells me that a significant amount of people who watched the movie noticed a political agenda, I'll also stand by that this movie for all intent and purposes was pure entertainment value. |

I did not call 300 pro-American.
In case you missed it, my post was a broadbrush sweep in general. It could be pro-Middle Eastern, pro-Singaporean, pro-Malaysian - whatever. And good then, we'll agree to disagree. |

I can never understand what is there to argue when "300" is a good movie and it ends there...
The movie wasn't even made for Propaganda purpose (as today's newspaper The Star pointed out how Iran was angry at the movie where the Spartans are not even Americans at all and they don't even know it's based on a graphic novel/comic book miniseries) but truely was made because Zack Snyder was a fan of Frank Miller (read his interview in IGN)... Hollywood is there to entertain and also to rake our cash cows into their bank accounts. But propaganda? Isn't that far-fetch? During the 1940s, many movies were made into propaganda because of government intervention... in today's standard, what propaganda is there? I feel to argue points of who is right or who is wrong is getting too deep into a movie like "300" whereby this movie is based on Frank Miller's version of his comic book mini-series. Not even about the history behind the 300 Spartans... comic book, fiction... I fear later when Watchmen is shown here in Malaysia... more Propaganda will be involve... geez... |

Hahahahah, i dont even have to come in here for other to rebuke your post, dear Diazepam. Zio, HairyLGS and even our mod PJ said it best. Those in power would so much dearly wants to politicize everything, movies included. If mankind are so easily swayed by taking whatever being portrayed on the silver screen as the ultimate truth, rather than interpretation of it, then i give up with mankind. If we as human has come to that low, we shouldnt even be appointed the caretaker of this world and kill ourselves already.
Fancy a little story? Try living in North Korea and see how "retelling of history" takes a whole different meaning there, all for the sake of your precious politics and propaganda. What's happening in this movie is the the very lightest of tainting of the truth, the only reason why propagandist like you marked it as important is because it is a popular medium of telling a story, market a product, spread your messages across, political notwithstanding. So, if you fancy everything to be POLITICAL and laced with CONSPIRACY, then feel free to to think as such. I go to my movies for entertainment, not listening to mass public rallies to sway my political standing, if i have any. Which is why i loathe politics in all its form, it is inherently dirty, even those who meant to do good. It is like choosing between two lesser evils. Have fun at your movies, im sure our next summer movies like Spider-Man 3, Pirates of Caribbean 3, or even poor Shrek 3 will get politicized by you every time you step into that cinema hall. Me? I just wanna enjoy Spider-Man beating the crap outta Sandman, Captain Jack Sparrow's faceoff with SaoFeng, and Shrek finding King Arthur in these movies. Zero political agendas, maximum enjoyment. Sorry if that sound a little shallow, but i treat my movies as such, unless they are laden with meanings and messages worth pondering for. Pity that you cant enjoy the movie "as it is" and had to insert whatever political angles you care to debate in it. Enjoy! Added on March 15, 2007, 3:07 pmSimply put, try exit polls. You do know what those are right? Exit polls are a survey of how the audience react about a certain movie after it has been screened. That way, you get their most earnest opinion about the movie, since their mind are still fresh with the thoughts and messages they get from the movie. The simplest for of exit polls/surveys you can get is going out with your bunch of friends. Ask them what they think of the movie. Do they IMMEDIATELY think of the American/Iraq/Iran and tie them to specific groups in the movie, or are they only thinking as such, when avid propagandist like you bring them up. I can bet my entire console collection plus their games here, that they would think more of the action set-pieces in the movie, and next about the message the movie brought across, which is valor, honor and freedom. Once that comes to mind, then only people like you will bring politics into the equation, when there are no such intentions. The war in the Middle East is fading from our thoughts, we think little of it when it comes to our daily lives. It is people like you who would like to bring those convoluted crap back into our faces, when things like these are the matters that divides peace-loving people like us. I dont see anything remotely political in the movie, other than a bunch of people fighting for their freedom from oppression of a bigger bunch of people. If you read more into that, then i suggest you exercise that brain power on something more worthwhile, rather than hatching endless political skews. We're playing the quote-by-quote game is it? Have at it then.
'Rebuke' my post? You're joking, right? If those posts are post that disagreed with yours, it falls within rebuke...isnt it? Are we resorting to name-calling now? Propagandist is as neutral a calling to artist, historian, pianist and physicist. You feel insulted by the word, or by the meaning that you ASSUME it comes with? Whose assuming now? Is it an assumption on your part or do you have concrete proof of my role as a 'propagandist'? I don't believe we've even had any sort of internet communication prior to this. Read the definition I found on the word propagandist:- "A person who disseminates messages calculated to assist some cause or some government." Since you subscribe to the idea that all mass media with its mediums are somewhat laced with political inclinations, this directly relates to the definition above. Again i ask, are you offended by the term, or by your own ASSUMPTION what a propagandist means? Yes, I have already said that I WILL hold a contrarian view to yours. Again, I am unable to understand how you can assume so much with so little information about me. You are not as UNASSUMING as you would like to think you are, my dear medicative friend.Read your backpedallings above. Yes, to have them not equate it to politics is the general intention. So, which is it? The filmmakers's intention is to tell a story, but propagandist like you<-----i will say this again and again, in contect of the definition i quote above, who are the ones equating present time polotics to a battle that happens ages ago. I did not bring politics to anything, did I? I was responding to your post that was already laden with politics. I fail to see any posts in this thread laden with politics before you came in. Unless it's politics of the forum lah, that's common day occurence here. In fact you can argue that every single post in this forum is laden with politics, either politics of self-indulgence, or group hivemind mentality, and the politics of expandin the influence of that said hivemind. Tell me what's new again? And yet again. Do you even know me? Who ARE people like 'me'? And you know that I don't because? And you know I 'hatch endless political skews' because? I did get you attention now did i? Then those two lines of sentences has served their purpose. They arent necessarily true, but they get you in here to response. Mission accomplished. --- It is pretty obvious that you are unable to have a civil discussion with a divergence of opinions without resorting to an infantile need to name-call and to assume based on a shallow intepretation of what have been posted. What freaking name-calling!??!? Did your estrogen level shot up to counter the testosterone level after watching this movie, making you feel so effeminately sensitive to every word here? Propagandist is NOT a bad word, FCUK, A$$HOLE and the likes are. If you feel so bad about being called a propagandist, it must have related to the nature of the word "propagandist" and what it meant to you. Save this excessive sensitivities to the womenfolk. As a 'peace-loving people', do you not find that neutrality is needed? Should you have any problems comprehending my earlier post, may I suggest that you read it again with an open mind - and not one tainted with your own personal bias. I suggest you read it again too. Those paragraph, in LAYMAN term, (since your sensitive side is assuming things again) are meant to show that even though Malaysians are peace-loving, even something as fickle as outside politics like American/Iraq/IRan crap still manage to divide us. Malaysians are peace-loving, no? Are you refuting that now? Is that why you think im name-calling when calling you a propagandist now? Jeeez, lay off the kacip fatimah, will ya! I specifically said to YOU that you will doubtlessly disagree and that you will attempt to reply precisely because of the kind of response that was forthcoming - I have read your other posts in this forum. If I was as confident about the others' inability to hold a civil discussion, I would have addressed it to everyone - which I didn't. Nor did I feel that no one else would post replies to my post. Glad to know my paparazzis still alive and well to this day. I have kept list of those who follow my every move around the forum and sniff at every word i typed in here. Including those who laugh infantily at even the most minute grammatical mistake i make in here. Unlike you, I do not feel the need to lambast every single reply that are polar opposites of mine, so please do note that I have mostly chosen to question/reply you on statements that have been directed towards me at a personal level, which I feel should have been unnecessary, given your self-admitted bias towards 'peace'. Errr, hello.....you just did that thing you just typed there. See if you dont lambast every post of mine after this, then you can claim that. The nature of a discussion/debate on a forum is that one will respond to another post, otherwise it's a one-sided conversation. Lambasting is too harsh a word, but then, im not surprised, judging from your state of mind, you are too sensitive for your own good. And oh, pot calling kettle black? Assumption seems to point to that on that last word of yours. "Peace"? As far as im concerned i never claimed im peaceful, you did. The only "peace" i related to is the relace-loving nature of Malaysians that i meant in the previous post. It pays to confirm one's meaning rather than assuming, which you claimed i did profusely in here, but instead i see you did even more so yourself! Once again, have a nice day. You have a nice day too. This post has been edited by stringfellow: Mar 15 2007, 06:40 PM |
