My dad just passed me his 2008 Macbook Pro. Still under Mac OS X Leopard. Should i update the software? How do I reset the system to a factory restore condition? I don't seem to see a lot of applications installed on the system. Is there a way to retrieve applications like Pages, etc??

well you could do it with formatting the disk and reinstalling the OS. You would need the DVD or a USB with the installation media.

Even if you use the update function you will still stay in the same variant.

you just need the apple ID to retrieve app store purchases like Pages.

DDR2 still available at Lelong. Only 2GB stick. U need 2 for 4GB.

After that, u also need a SSD otherwise El Capitan will be very slow.

My 2007 MBP came with 4GB from previous owner but the standard 120GB HDD is very slow with El Capitan. Ended up ditching it away since already 10 years old. Bought a SSD from a forumer here. Later, will ditch the DVD drive as well. Useless anyway.

Here: http://www.lelong.com.my/kingston-pc2-5300...7-08-Sale-P.htm

The HDD is slow because already 10 years old. Better to replace it before it fails later on. Lifespan for HDD is about 3-5 years tops.

it's still running Leopard? blink.gif

difference between HDD and SSD is night and day bro.. you won't even feel like it's a 2008 laptop anymore biggrin.gif

anyway is this the late 2008 unibody or the early 2008 non-unibody model? if it's the unibody model, it can support up to 8gb (2x4gb) RAM.

I believe i can breathe fire into this notebook.

With 4gb of ram, can Mac Os X Yosemite runs smoothly?

8GB RAM would be optimum for Yosemite if you want butter smoothness, but the processor speed and HDD does play a part too.

Is 4GB RAM is the max it can support?

Also, putting in an SSD would really help (as sort of Virtual RAM - disc cache) if you only can upgrade to 4GB RAM.

Use this website to check.

Early 2008 Macbook Pro (non unibody) are said to be able to run up to 6Gb of RAM max.

Then why not just set 4GB+2GB configuration for 6GB in total?

It will definitely run better than 4GB

Yeah that 4Gb stick is tough to find. That's why my 2008 Macbook Pro still runs on 4Gb of RAM.
