8GB RAM would be optimum for Yosemite if you want butter smoothness, but the processor speed and HDD does play a part too.

Is 4GB RAM is the max it can support?

Also, putting in an SSD would really help (as sort of Virtual RAM - disc cache) if you only can upgrade to 4GB RAM.

Then why not just set 4GB+2GB configuration for 6GB in total?

It will definitely run better than 4GB
