ooh maybe lor i check during cny is 500++ la xmas dunno la....u going there alone???
No going wth my wife & daughter. Can only booked during school holiday ..Yeah AA Early Feb'10 ~RM525 nia...very good buy but I can't during that time. Balik Kampung is compulsory during CNY & Taipei as others chinese cities will be emptied during this period..nothing interesting during CNY..be warned.

Well I'm not sure about it but as u read everywhere & also frm those went to China (not Taipei) the cities look deserted..souless & lotsa shops closed....it's understood that chinese normally closed during CNY for ~10 days what...so based on this, I'm sure taipei also almost souless..loh..probably going a week before CNY or 2 weeks after will be a good idea?

Countdown? Somewhere around 101?
I guess the countdown concert will be held there too, that area gonna be very congested.
If you have a valid motorcycle licence (an international one should do) you can rent scooters in Hualien (there are a couple of shops near the train station) for really cheap and make it to Taroko.
Tnx thinking of renting a car..family trip. but I'm still trying to find a way by taking the bullet train to Taiching & thereafter to Hehuan for the snow &thereafter to taroko...within 2 days...possible?
If you plan to travel around Taroko, i recommened you a cabbie called Mr. Chen (0937-167-779).. he is veli nice person and know everything bout Taroko, he is a tour guide too.. 80% of his customers are sporean because according to him, malaysian seldom do research and backpack like wat we did.. (he is famous in TripAdvisor forum).
Mr Chen also recommended us to overnight in a 民宿called石頭的家 which we never regret. 劉阿姨 is the owner, and she is super friendly and always join us for all activities. She is just like a mom there taking care of us, she even brought us some face marks becasue of the flu, so warm.... We booked a room for 4 person NT$2000 initially, but once arrived, she upgrade us to 6 person room, which should cost around NT$3000. and you cant miss their super yummy breakfast..! even her maid prepared the breakfast but it's super yummy..! we have 2 sets of breakfast each.. lolhttp://www.sutohome.com/
Mr Chen's standard charges is 1 day trip in Taroko NT$2200 and don't worry, he owned a Toyota Wish.. It's super confort.

Tnx kokuryo.. .Now my taruko trip probably decided already..but how to goto Wuling (hehuan Mt..I want to see snmow!!)..& thereafter to Taichung to catch the bullet train bck to Taipei?
That really one lack of info on this...Taroko info even suggested hitch hiking!!

I don't have an answer, but I can suggest a place where you might find it. If you go to www.couchsurfing.org, create a profile, join the taiwan/taipei group and post your question there, there are a lot of Taiwan- based people there who should be able to help you out.
It's almost impossible to cross from Taichung to Taroko without a rented car and a winter tyre chain especially at Mt Hehuan. There is no Public transport serving from Mt hehuan to taroko unless hitch hiking style. & impossible within 1 day because from Taichung to mt Hehuan already ~4hrs! and during winter where whole taiwanese flocking to Mt hehuan to see snow...the whole road up there will be jam
So my only option by Public tranport is by taking a train journey to Hualien (~NT$1000/pax return) & hire a car + driver as suggested by kokuryo ~NT2000++) Or probably I asked them to bring me further near to Mt hehuan wth additional $$
