Will use i7 instead of Ryzen in this build because budget AM4 mobo is nowhere to be found yet, as for the GPU, I'll pick GTX1060 over RX480 because GTA V favors Nvidia GPU heavily.

Intel Core i7 7700 - RM 1424
Asus H110M-K - RM 259
G.SKill Aegis 16GB (8GB x 2) DDR4 2133MHz RAM - RM 510

Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD - RM 219

Monitor resolution: - 1080

Games & softwares: streaming movies, excel, word, powerpoint. Gaming: shadow of war (in future), fps

Personal preferences: Personally I like those small cases, but I dont mind the normal tower ones.

Location: Kuala Lumpur

Thanks guys!

Asus H110M-K - RM 259
G.SKill Aegis 8GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM - RM 255
Zotac GTX1050 2GB GDDR5 Mini - RM 589

QUOTE(zorbyss. @ Mar 29 2017, 10:21 AM)
Hey guys, an off topic question and trying to learn something here. I see there's virtually no suggestions for RX480/RX470 here. Despite its faster on newer API DX12/Vulkan (I know DX12 is a cluster fuck but still it's the future) and slightly cheaper. Also, get to utilize adaptive sync with lower budget (Freesync). Any idea why?
*
I can see 2 main reasons:

[Personal Preferences] <--- Most of the people here (the one who asks for suggestion) prefer Nvidia over AMD (don't shoot me innocent.gif ).

[Games & softwares] <--- Most of the time, it is occupied with "Nvidia" titles, hence more GTX1060 than RX480.

The budget range in this suggestion thread is mostly < 5k, that's one of the main reasons why FreeSync/GSync is not in the discussion, yup we know that FreeSync is cheaper than GSync by quite a large margin but 1080p 144Hz FreeSync still costs > 1k, it is not really that budget friendly unless FreeSync upgrade is specified purposely.

QUOTE(Lumiaaa @ Mar 29 2017, 10:56 AM)
Can you suggest small form factor build? Such as node 202 case and a different mobo to fit

I'm aware my budget may go up a bit
*
Intel Core i7 7700 - RM 1424
ASRock H110M-ITX - RM 283
G.SKill Aegis 16GB (8GB x 2) DDR4 2133MHz RAM - RM 510
Zotac GTX1060 6GB GDDR5 Mini - RM 1229
Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD - RM 219
Corsair SF450 - RM 460
Fractal Design Node 202 - RM 379

Total: RM 4504 (ETECH price inclusive of GST)

Hello, can recommend me 1.5K gaming rig. For my little sister, she want to play The Sims 4.

[Budget] 1.5k MAX

[Purpose] Gaming

[Hardwares that will be re-use] Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse

[Games & softwares that use frequently] The Sims 4

[Location] Available Melaka, KL, Muar
*
The usual i3 7100 build will be sufficient, G4560 is also fine but since you are going to rely on iGPU for gaming, i3 7100's HD630 is faster than G4560's HD610.

Intel Core i3 7100 - RM 519
Asus H110M-K - RM 279
Corsair 8GB DDR4 2133MHz Value RAM - RM 259
WD Blue 1TB HDD - RM 219
AVF PSU + Casing ~ RM 150

Total up will be around RM 1430 (Viewnet price).

QUOTE(Saladz @ Mar 29 2017, 03:53 PM)
Been reading comments. So many conflicting views on Ryzen and i7.

So am i right to sum up that Ryzen is better than i7 in multitasking but falls short of i7 in gaming?

I am planning to build a PC to be used as my workstation and also for some gaming (CS:GO, Dota 2 and some MMORPGs).

Current PC is laggy (i5 2400) - mostly due to heat i guess, the temperature fluctuation is very high, causing lag spikes which annoy me a lot.

I open like 30 tabs in 2 of my browsers always and tens of Microsoft Excel, Word, Paint & few other programs.

I usually also keep games open without closing them.

Most importantly, i want to keep antivirus open without it slowing down my computer.

I also don't like my PC running hot as i think it causes spikes. So a build with aftermarket coolers is preferred.

In short, for the tasks that i have mentioned: Ryzen or i7?

Budget can be anywhere from 5K to 10K.

This build will be used for dual monitor setup. One for gaming (1080 TN), another for work and other stuffs (4K). Will run them together sometimes if i need to multitask heavily.

Thanks.
*
Ryzen wins in multithreaded/multicore application, most of the games out there aren't fully utilizing the extra core/thread of PC processor yet, hence the one with higher single core performance will win (just like CS:GO & Dota 2).

If you plan to overclock the CPU, then you'll need to get a decent 3rd party CPU cooler and mobo.

QUOTE(MagnificM @ Mar 29 2017, 04:04 PM)
even the version is the 7200rpm one ?
*
I'll request for HDD health and bad sector report first, at least I get to know the status of the HDD before I make the purchase right tongue.gif

QUOTE(zorbyss. @ Mar 29 2017, 04:21 PM)
Yeah. Malaysians are really butthurt about AMD. Nvidia kinda has that "prestige" status when comes to GPU. Nvidia titles aside, if ppl study the benchmarks in a while, as in 2016 vs 2017 benchmarks, RX480's performance is increasing gradually overtime when comparing to GTX1060, they're pretty much on par (sponsored titles like Hitman, RotTR aside. DX12/Vulkan is pretty a clear win for AMD

Speaking of Freesync monitors, sometimes non-adaptive sync monitor even more expensive than freesync monitor despite the similar specs. which I can't understand why. Freesync 144hz is kinda pointless as there's still no viable AMD GPU to feed that amount of framerates for newer games.

Hate it when ppl oppose my suggestion for AMD and insisting Nvidia is better without justifying why. The best they do is show me old benchmarks.
*
GPU technology is evolving rapidly and people tend to change their gaming card in one to two years of time so the performance that they can get NOW matters the most to them, things might change in the future when Nvidia fails to catch up in the DX12/Vulkan race when they become the primary API.

Avoid fighting with fanboy, pointless to argue with them laugh.gif

Hi, i;m planning to build an ITX Rig, here is what i have in mind atm:

I7 7700
GA-B250N-Phoenix WIFI (any other itx mobo that support m.2)
INTEL 540s 240GB M.2
Fractal Design Define Nano S

I haven't made up my mind on the ram (at least 16gb) and PSU, any good and reliable full or semi modular PSU to recommend?

Note:

I don't need a GPU..

Appreciate for any recommendation smile.gif

Hi sifus,
need your recommendation on pc parts with price. I plan to upgrade my rig. Mostly use it to play games on 1080p. Here are the current specs:

Budget: around rm2000 - rm3000

i3 4160 ~~ any newest and best i5 or i7
asus h81m-k ~~ if need to change due to cpu compatibility, please specify ya
ram 8gb (4gbx2) ~~ i think don't need to upgrade on this yet
galax gtx 750ti ~~ preferably to get the best gtx1060. please specify the best one
silverstone strider essential 500w ~~ this one can support gtx1060 right?

My current rig was actually based on one of the sifu here (can't remember the name) around two years ago if I'm not mistaken and I'm really happy with it.

Now I just want to get up to date to the latest tech.

You guys are awesome and Thanks in advance!

If you want to save money, then you can try to find i7 4770/4790 and re-use your current mobo because latest generation CPU is using a newer socket (1151), thus increasing the total cost for whole CPU platform upgrade.

For your budget, I would recommend getting the i7 4770/4790 (new or used, depends on you, I'll just assume you are going to get a new one which costs around 1.3k) and GTX1060 6GB or RX480 8GB. Both CPU and GPU upgrade will sum up around 2.6k.

QUOTE(d3ck @ Mar 29 2017, 11:56 PM)
Any good monitor for less than RM500? Cheaper is always better. Currently looking at View Sonic VA2419. If you have any cheaper model which best bang for the buck, appreciate if you could help me. Min size 21"
*
AOC I2280SWD, around RM 400
Acer R221Q, around RM 500

Yeah, VA2419 seems to be the best option right now if you are looking for IPS and 24" screen.

Hi,

I want to buy a refurbished HP z800

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-z800-Xeon-Quad-...PUAAOSwrklVIx7E
Model HP z800 Workstation
Operating System Windows 7 Pro (64-bit)
Processor Intel Xeon E5520 2.53/2.26 GHz Quad-Core HT CPU (8 threads)
Memory  8GB DDR3
Storage 2 TB Hard Drive
DVD-RW SuperMulti Drive
Graphics nVidia Quadro FX 1800 - 768 MB
Display n/a
Audio Integrated HD Audio
Networking Gigabit Ethernet

And thinking of upgrading the Graphic with a newer card.

Is this route favourable?

Purpose is gaming.
*
Not cheap sweat.gif

The processor clock speed is low so expect the performance of single threaded games to suffer a bit.

Why don't get a new set (or used set) locally? Save all the hassle, and you gonna upgrade the GPU also if you really go for this refurbished PC, it's like spending money for nothing.

Thanks

End up I go for this

Intei Core i7 7700
Asus B150 Pro Gaming
Asus Strix GTX10180
Kingsston SSDNow M.2 240gb
Kingston D4 PC2400 Fury 16GB Ram

EVGA SuperNova 550 PSU seems not available here, any other idea what else I can get for PSU?

Case and Monitor still not yet decide. Still thinking should I use back my old Dell, or break the budget and get a 1440p monitor.

PS: Asus B150 pro gaming is a good mobo? This I might still can change.
*
If you are looking for same tier (tier 1) PSU that costs the same (more or less) as the EVGA unit that I've recommended to you earlier, then you can consider these:

1. Superflower Leadex Gold
2. Corsair RMx/RMi
3. Cooler Master V series (only for fully modular model)

Or "downgrade" to EVGA SuperNova GQ series (tier 2).

How much is the mobo? RM 500++? If yes then it is overpriced, B150 is last gen chipset, current gen is B250 (the successor of B150), it is not worth to pay for RM 500 for an old chipset when you can buy a new chipset at about the same cost.

Depends on the features (3D, render, brush resizing etc.) that you are going to use in PS, some require GPU, some don't need, some won't run without dedicated GPU.

QUOTE(vDARKv @ Apr 1 2017, 03:37 PM)
Anyone can give me a short brief about what is SSD? Please make it short and easy to understand as I search over the article about the SSD and HDD. It is very confusing me.

1) I know SSD can read, write data faster and also start up window faster, but does it store data as well? or it just help to boots the HDD become faster?

2) If I get a SSD, do I still need the HDD?

3) I saw some SSD is like a ram stick that plug on the mother board and some is just like normal hard drive. sSo what's the difference between these two models.

4) The SDD storage is way smaller than HDD. So how many gb is recommend to take? and what's the price?

Thanks in advance.
*
They serve the similar purpose which is to store data (a.k.a storage drive). SSD stores data in the flash memory while HDD stores data in the magnetic storage.

1. SSD doesn't boost the performance of HDD, they work independently. The recently announced Intel Optane memory is the one you are looking for if you want something that can boost the performance of HDD as it is served as a caching drive (you need a compatible 7th gen Intel CPU and mobo to use this feature).

2. And do you need HDD if you already bought SSD? This depends on you, SSD is expensive and usually we still rely on HDD to store files as they are much cheaper than SSD.

3. That's an SSD in M.2 form factor, it can run on SATA or even PCIe NVMe mode, if it is a M.2 SSD with SATA interface then the main difference with normal 2.5" SATA SSD is just the size.

4. As mentioned earlier, SSD is expensive, usually we only use it for OS and frequently used files/apps. 240GB is the standard/common size nowadays. 120GB is around RM 300 while 240GB is around RM 500 (depends on the brand and the price is based on SATA SSD, PCIe NVMe SSD is more expensive).

*
Depends on the display connector of your monitor, if you have 2 monitors with DisplayPort and 1 with HDMI then it is quite straight forward, just use the respective display connector of your GPU and connect to the monitor, then press "Windows key + P" and choose "Extend".

If your monitor doesn't have DisplayPort (only HDMI or DVI) then you need to buy adapter (DP-to-HDMI).

This is a tough one, because an entry level BenQ 1080p 144Hz monitor will take ~1.3k already, and you need another RM 400+ for a 240GB SSD sweat.gif

If you only play Overwatch then you can save some money by going for GTX1050Ti instead of GTX1060 (or other equivalent cards).

Intel Core i5 7500 - RM 922
Asus H110M-K - RM 259
G.SKill Aegis 8GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM - RM 255
Gigabyte GTX1050Ti 4GB GDDR5 OC - RM 739
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD - RM 464
Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD - RM 219
FSP Hexa+ 550W - RM 195
Tecware Edge - RM 149
BenQ Zowie XL2411 - RM 1299

Total: RM 4501 (E TECH price inclusive of GST)

Hunt in Garage Sales for "cheap" Windows 10 key, beware of counterfeit code though.

Dear sifu

Im planning to upgrade my rig as my pc starting to black screen itself when im playing game and i've been told it might be my gpu or psu problem. So far, the only solution is to downclock my gpu and im very annoyed by performing the same thing everytime before i launch a game. Please suggest what to upgrade.

My current spec. (Have 2-3k to spend)
Intel Core I5 3470
Asrock H77 Pro4/MVP
Gskill SNIPER 2x4GB DDR3 1600mhz
WD 1TB Caviar Blue
XIGMATEK ASGARD PRO
Enermax NAXN82+ 650W PSU
Leadtek GTX670 2GB DDR5
Plextor M5S 128GB SSD
*
Get a new GPU (likely to be GTX1060/RX480) and a new decent PSU like EVGA SuperNova/Superflower Leadex Gold series, both items will cost you less than 2k.

thanks for the suggestion. what if im going for higher end gpu like gtx1070? any bottleneck with my current spec?

Some CPU-bounded games will still show CPU bottleneck symptoms, it is just the matter of whether you can accept the bottleneck (a.k.a lower FPS compared to a GXT1070 with i7 CPU) or not.

Example of these games are Hitman 2016, Watch Dogs 2, TC: GR Wildlands etc, try to lower down the settings (those CPU-bounded one) to obtain a stable frame rate.

Hi fellow seniors, I'm having a situation like such, with PC specs like below:-

Processor - Intel Core i5 4460
Cooler - Coolermaster Hyper 212+
Mobo - Some DDR3 Mobo
Ram - 4GB RAM DDR3 x 2 = 8GB
Graphics Card - Gigabyte GTX460 768MB OC Edition
PSU - Silverstone ST60F-ESB (80+ BRONZE)
Case - CoolerMaster HAF 922
SSD - Samsung 840 EVO 128GB

Is this spec is still adequate these days? As I open quite a lot Google chrome tabs, but it clashed, and my remaining storage from my SSD is only 12GB. Is it sufficient enough? Looking at DDR4,  should I upgrade my mobo, just to get DDR4 8GB or should I get other 4GB DDR3 sticks to make into 12GB DDR3 instead?

Free up the space of your SSD, 8GB RAM is okay for normal usage pattern, but Chrome is known to consume a lot of memory when you open many tabs and Windows will automatically utilize your main OS drive (by default) for pagefile when your RAM is running low.

If insufficient RAM is really the root cause of Chrome occasional crash (you can check Task Manager to monitor the usage), try to get another 8GB DDR3 1333/1600MHz RAM, don't get DDR4 because it is not supported by your current system.
