you might consider second hand laptop with:
Intel 8th Gen or Ryzen 2000+ are solid for basic tasks. Avoid older or N-series CPUs.
Most budget units come with 8GB, but 16GB is ideal.
Many budget units offer 256GB but 512GB is great, the more the merrier. More storage means more flexibility
*
Ryzen 3000*, as Ryzen 2000 mobile platforms do not support Windows 11 officially icon_idea.gif

Hi LYN members,

I am looking to buy and donate a new laptop to a neighbor's child who is starting university but is financially struggling. I want to get them the most reliable machine possible within my budget.

Recipient: University Student

Budget: RM1,500 and a little extra.

Goal: A reliable, basic machine for study that won't break down easily.

Please share your best value-for-money recommendations. Thank you for helping me make this happen!
*
Easy way to go around is to get a used ThinkPad/Elitebook from the second hand market, the ThinkPad T/X/X1 models are good choices, as long as it has an officially supported CPU for Windows 11, adequate amount of RAM and SSD storage icon_idea.gif
Basically any machines with Intel's 8th Gen and Ryzen 3000 mobile onwards + 8/16GB RAM (16GB recommended) with at least 256GB storage should be plenty workable icon_idea.gif

Since they are business models, they tend to be built better than your garden variety consumer machines, and replacement parts are in abundance too icon_idea.gif

Most new models under RM1.5K are almost certainly terrible to use, and they are very underpowered with mediocre build quality icon_idea.gif

Whats your work purpose use? Right now 9060XT 16GB is overall value for money overseas, not sure in Msia if can get at MSRP.
*
Without CUDA/Nvidia's ecosystem the 9060XT isn't exactly a good fit for productivity icon_idea.gif

According to Shopee, a 16GB RX9060 XT costs around RM1639 (Gigabyte Gaming OC), which translates to around US389. That's actually quite in line with what most RX9060 XTs currently offer on the US market icon_idea.gif
Note that GPU prices can get quite a bit lower during the X.X sales on Shopee/Lazada, so do take advantage of that icon_idea.gif

Hi sifus, planning to build & set up a gaming PC by end of the year, any recommendations with the details below?  smile.gif
Budget: 6.5k-7k

Purpose: Gaming on Friday nights/weekends, Photoshop, Data analytics (SQL, Python scripting)

Game types: RPG Games like - Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon franchise, Genshin

Reusing parts: Logitech Bluetooth K380 keyboard, Wireless USB Mouse

Preference: At least 16gb ram & 1TB storage, possible for 1440p gaming?, no plans on using RT
*
Since 11.11 is around the corner (it's arguably one of the largest sales event of the year), perhaps it might be better to plan now icon_idea.gif

Oh, think I worded my sentence in a wrong way, I am planning to buy PC parts right now, to which ideally to have my gaming PC all set up to enjoy by the year end.

From your advice then, best would be for me to wait until Q1 2026 for the 50 Super series (and get the 5070 Super 18GB VRAM) and lower Intel CPU prices then?
*
Again, don't plan your build based on rumors; it's a very bad thing because there's always unexpected delays or potential cancellations, not to mention prices may be lackluster when the cards did arrive icon_idea.gif
If you are willing to wait about 3 weeks or so the 11.11 Shopee/Lazada sales will be a great time to buy parts - after all it's probably one of the largest sales event of the year icon_idea.gif

For your budget I think you can definitely go for a 7800X3D + 5070 Ti/9070 XT build; depending how the sale goes icon_idea.gif

Hi all, since 5800x3d is no more stocks now, is Ryzen 7600 better gaming performance than 5800 x3d?

If not, any equivalent or better CPU to replace 5800x3d? (non OC user)

Thanks.
*
Are you upgrading an existing AM4 system? Since the 5800/5700X3D is EOL'd (if you are very lucky like I am you can probably find new old stock from shops), you have two options:

1. Buy a 5800X3D from places like Aliexpress (may not be ideal due to warranty and reliability problems), or
2. Swap to a new AM5 platform - the 5800X3D has the same gaming performance as the 7600X according to HWUB, but some may point our the larger cache of the X3D chips will benefit greatly from certain genres like simulation/strategy and MMOs:

Action game such as Stars Wars Jedi Survivor, Spiderman, GOW, Ratchet and Clank those.

My budget will be 2.5k for CPU,MOBO and Ram.

My current CPU is 3600 and 3070ti GPU. My fault that I am busy with other thing until recently find out 5800x3D no longer in stock.

The best I can go is 5700x3d seems?

Yes, but it's likely EOL'd sweat.gif

Answering your question, the i5 14500 is a small uplift over the 3600 in terms of gaming performance, certainly not worth spending that much to swap to a 'dead' platform sweat.gif
A 7500F + B650 board will be a much better pick IMHO - the CPU is equal to the 5800X3D in terms of gaming, and you do get plenty of upgrade path in the future. The tentative 10800X3D should be a substantial upgrade over the 7500F if the rumors are indeed correct, and it should be compatible with your board with a BIOS update icon_idea.gif

P.S. you may want to upgrade your GPU too, especially with the 8GB VRAM is no longer viable for modern titles these days icon_idea.gif

For the budget of rm3k, I wish to do some editing. It seems u recommend a higher cpu, i7 vs i5 with a gpu. Is it fair to say for that budget this would be the best option?

If you are video editing, 6500 XT is crap to begin with. It has no video encoder. Intel built-in GPU is overpowered for it. i7 will make it even smoother.

Kinda exceeded my budget, I checked my cart, even with voucher it knock off rm250, it's still like rm400 extra. Need a bit buffer for peripheral.
Any recommendation on where I can skim off?

Also, amd vs Intel i7? Can I have your take?

Tristan reco is good up to the budget limit but if you want to save cost on this office PC, GPT reco isnt too bad. More details

Intel Core i5-12400F
MSI B760M-E DDR4 (or any B660/B760 mobo is okay)
Corsair/Kingston ValueRAM 16GB (2×8GB) DDR4 3200MHz
Adata S70/ Legend 960Max 1TB SATA SSD
RTX 5060 8GB (editing takes advantage of Nvidia features) (or RTX 5050 if budget is over limit)
FSP HV Pro 550W / 650W 80+ Bronze (or else MSI A650BN if its cheaper)
MATX case with airflow (ie Tecware M2, Montech Air 100)

If your gonna be spending money, would better topup bit more for:

13th Generation Intel® Core™ i5 processorWindows 11 Home15.6" diagonal FHD displayNVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 405016 GB DDR4-3200 RAM512 GB SSD Hard Drive

Coz you cant upgrade the main parts so its better to spec up when you buy.

That’s my concern with Asrock boards.
Especially with the 9800X3D.
Is 850W sufficient for 7800x3D + 5080?

Don’t think I’ll go for the 5090 or 4090.
I’ll stick with my 5080 with frame gen + DLSS for 4k gaming. benchmark for 4k gaming is the ps5 pro haha, as long it’s better performance than that, I’m happy enough.
*
Might want to stick up to 9600X as the ITX mobo VRAMS might not be sufficient to power 8Cores & above.

Klevv is affiliated with Hynix so your more than guaranteed to get A- (binary size) & M- (non-binary size) dies instead of AIBS that will use unknown perhaps crap Sammies & Crucials. CL28 is very good low latency RAM.
Just double check its on your mobo QVL as Ryzen is very finicky with its RAM pairing and also depends its mobo.
