Totally agree. Even if a car is tuned to have optimal performance with RON97, usually the power difference is minimal, like 2-4% more power than RON95.

Even if your typical teh tarik is sweeter than usual by 2-4% than usual, how can you know the difference if no one were to tell you? Shiok sendiri is most likely the effect.
*
If high performance turbo cars then the difference would be more noticeable because you can run higher boost, hence can make much more power. But for NA cars, you only get a bit more advanced timing hence the power increase is marginal. Like my Mark X, spec sheet says can run ron95-98, so by right optimized for 98 but when I compare 95 and 97 practically no difference so I just run 95 lah, why waste money. Other Mark X guys in the club are adamant must run 97 cuz they claim much more powerful but when go touge with me, macam sama saje! šŸ˜†

exactly, RON (Research Octane Number) the higher the number, the harder it is to burn.

RON97 just means it's more resistant to knocking than RON95. "Knocking" is when the air-fuel mixture prematurely ignites before the piston reaches the spark plug (so the piston doesn't complete a full cycle).

I'm guessing RON97 made sense when Malaysia only sold RON92 and RON97 ? Probably somebody was already planing on removing subsidies for fuel but got cold feet and continued the subsidies when RON95 was introduced.

Below is the estimated daily fuel price and some estimation. No guarantees any of the estimates will be correct as the government has been heavily subsidizing the fuel price. The good news is that RON95/Diesel has hit the ceiling and will continue on to be RM2.05 & RM2.15 respectively for the foreseeable future.

Date Daily Fuel RON95 Price Daily RON97 Price
2/3/2021 RM2.13 RM2.43
3/3/2021 RM2.14 RM2.44
4/3/2021 RM2.18 RM2.48
5/3/2021 RM2.25 RM2.55
6/3/2021 RM2.25* RM2.55*
7/3/2021 RM2.25* RM2.55*
8/3/2021 RM2.31 RM2.51
9/3/2021 RM2.27 RM2.57
10/3/2021 RM2.27 RM2.57
11/3/2021 RM2.31 RM2.61
12/3/2021 RM2.34 RM2.64
13/3/2021 RM2.34* RM2.64*
14/3/2021 RM2.34* RM2.64*
15/3/2021 RM2.37 RM2.67
16/3/2021 RM2.32 RM2.62
17/3/2021 RM2.34 RM2.64
18/3/2021 RM2.28 RM2.58
19/3/2021 RM2.21 RM2.51
20/3/2021 RM2.21* RM2.51
21/3/2021 RM2.21* RM2.51
22/3/2021 RM2.22 RM2.52
23/3/2021 RM2.21 RM2.51

*weekend prices are following Friday

If the govt is following Wednesday to Tuesday cycle, then the actual price of RON95/RON97 would be RM2.25 & RM2.55 respectively.
If the govt is following Tuesday to Monday cycle, then the actual price of RON95/RON97 would be RM2.26 & RM2.56 respectively.

Most likely, RON97 will go up by 8 sen to RM2.55/l tomorrow.

28/3/2021 RM2.22* RM2.52*
29/3/2021 RM2.25 RM2.55
30/3/2021 RM2.29 RM2.59

*weekend prices are following Friday

If the govt is following Wednesday to Tuesday cycle, then the actual price of RON95/RON97 would be RM2.23 & RM2.53 respectively. (Calc A)
If the govt is following Tuesday to Monday cycle, then the actual price of RON95/RON97 would be RM2.22 & RM2.52 respectively. (Calc B)

There is a possibility that the govt has gone back to the old RON97 calculation of around 11-12% more than RON95, instead of a simple additional RM0.30 from RON95. If so, RON97 is estimated to be either RM2.48 (Calc A) or RM2.47 (Calc B).

Most likely, RON97 will go down by 2 sen to RM2.48/l tomorrow. Let's see what the govt announces.

RON97 up by 2 cents. Possibly using Calc B method. To be tested again next week.

Calculation and table of estimated prices can be found at this link: https://goo.gl/cpYiBN. No guarantees any of the estimates will be correct as the government has been heavily subsidizing the fuel price. The good news is that RON95/Diesel has hit the ceiling and will continue on to be RM2.05 & RM2.15 respectively for the foreseeable future.

If calculating 30/3 to 5/4 cycle (Tuesday to Monday - weekends are using Friday prices), the actual retail price for RON95 & RON97 should be RM2.27 and RM2.57 respectively (Ā±1 sen).

Thus, I estimate that RON97 would go up by 5 sen from last week at RM2.57 (Ā±1 sen).

Note: RON95 will be capped at RM2.05/l & Diesel at RM2.15/l source
