Just in case anyone is interested to know what is the fuel "market price" now:

Daily estimated price for 22 May 2018:
USD91.91 per barrel MOPS95
Exchange rate of USD1 = MYR3.9780
RM365.61798 per barrel
1 barrel = 158.987295L
RM2.2997/L
Operator Margins is RM0.05 Alpha, RM0.0954 Operating Cost, RM0.05 Oil company margin, and RM0.1219 Petrol station dealer's margin

RM2.2997+RM0.3173 = RM2.62/L

Thus the government is subsidizing around 42sen for every litre you are using.

what's Alpha ?

and who claims the Operating Cost ? Petrol Station, Haulier, Terminal, Trader etc ?

thanks sweat.gif

but nothing on the 1st page answered my question.

1. What is Alpha ?
Price difference between MOPS & Actual Price. Isn't MOPS already the "market" price ? And Oil Companies generally get a discount on MOPS due to their large volumes no ? so why an additional top up ?

2. Who claims the Operating Cost ?

Very good layman real life explanation on: Why WTI Crude Oil traded at minus -$37

Imagine the following... You pay $500 today and commit to receiving an escort at your house in 15 days. Cos your wife is traveling. This is called a futures contract.

Unfortunately, lockdown came and your wife will be home for the next 60 days.

You do not want this woman to show up at your house at all and try to pass this futures contract to someone else.

Only you cannot sell this commitment because nobody can receive the escort at home anymore. Everyone is in full storage (their balls) with their wife.

To make matters worse, not even the pimp (Chicago Mercantile Exchange) has more room to receive the girls because his house is crowded with girls.

So you will pay anyone just to take the girl off your hands.

Do you now understand why oil has a negative price when the contract is delivered?

another one I heard :

In normal times you would pay the water supply company for water. But when your house is flooded you would pay someone to take it away.

if im not mistaken....if your car with high compression engine...is good to use higher ron fuel...

exactly, RON (Research Octane Number) the higher the number, the harder it is to burn.

RON97 just means it's more resistant to knocking than RON95. "Knocking" is when the air-fuel mixture prematurely ignites before the piston reaches the spark plug (so the piston doesn't complete a full cycle).

I'm guessing RON97 made sense when Malaysia only sold RON92 and RON97 ? Probably somebody was already planing on removing subsidies for fuel but got cold feet and continued the subsidies when RON95 was introduced.

I too don't understand why they subsidized RON97. No normal consumer car need RON97 and those that can afford the cars that requires RON97 can afford to pay the market rate.

I guess that they controlled / subsidized RON97 because some unscrupulous vendors try to increase prices for basic necessities when ANY petrol price increase. Either that or they just don't want people to panic as when RON97 increase, RON95 may increase soon too.

just a guess, but maybe it's to keep things "status quo" for the petrol dealers margin ?

also if they were to float RON97, by market logic prices would be low where it's competitive (city) and higher where people have less choice (outskirts ... or even East Malaysia). Just thinking about the complaints this would get is enough to keep the subsidy going tongue.gif
