FHD (2.6 mbps) vs HD (1.3 mbps)

Both are processed similarly...taken at viewing distance and cropped...color a bit out due to camera auto white balance

So which is which? Is the HD one acceptable? smile.gif

Got FHD projector?

I also got ancient projector it really like watching SD or lower
*
No issue...you won't see the pixels sitting at the proper viewing distance...

Mine is FHD. Got 4K also nowadays.

A good CRT projector, with proper processing and setting up, can still give the newer ones a run for their money...

Since no takers...

I'd just say this FHD@2.6 mbps is marginally better. Why? With HD@1.3 mbps, the equivalent FHD bitrate is only about 2.2 mbps...so this HD is inferior...

There are many situations the reverse is true...where the 1080p quality is not necessary better than 720p

The unit of measure is bpp (bits per pixel) if people wants to learn more...

the good news for u then is with hevc, a 1gb 45min video which is about 370KBps or 3mbps is good enough - 1080p, dd5.1.

whether quasar or some other means.
for those who demand more, get into 10bit videos - the color depths are significantly deeper than 8bit, esp when displayed on a 4k tv.
*
Thanks...yes that is very acceptable/good quality for streaming...hope more shows get encoded to HEVC... right now still limited...

...finally got quasar n reborn installed... lol...

Both brands are ok.

You need to compare by models...they all got pros & cons...and people have different needs and preferences...

I'd include Epson and Vivitek into the mix...and JVC if you have the funds...

QUOTE(plumberly @ Jun 24 2017, 06:22 PM)
I was looking at changing over to projector for my next TV upgrade last year. But after doing some study on the web, decided against it. With your experience, hope that you can help.

My main drawback with projector is the light from outside that will wash out the image on the screen. Yes, having a dedicated home theatre room will help but at present the viewing habitat is still my living room. So ....

Also high lamp cost and the frequency in replacing the lamp.

In addition to the above, appreciate your views on:

AA
DLP, LCD, and LCOS
Which one is best suited for the higher end of average range?

BB
Your recommended screen material?

CC
Ball park costs in projector and screen.

Also appreciate feedback from those who have set up but later reverted back to TV and who are using projectors now.

Many thanks.

P/S Enjoy the long Hari Raya break! Selamat Hari Raya to our muslim friends here!

Correct... controlling ambient light is paramount...living room is not ideal but can be managed via black-out curtains, ambient light rejection screen, etc. Reflected light from the screen needs to be managed too. The room doesn't have to be pitch black, obviously the darker the better.

You can maintain a TV for day use, and projector for movie night wink.gif

Lamp replacement frequency is a non-issue IMHO. My projectors are rated 6000 hrs in eco/low power mode. It means at 6000 hrs, light output is reduced by half. I put mine in eco because they are still quite bright, and when time comes I can crank it back up for extra say 1000hrs... if you use 2 hrs per day, 6000 hrs == 8 years!

Bare bulb costs US$ 20-30 for DIY...buying the whole light housing will obviously cost a bit more, on Lazada < RM300.

AA. For now LCoS is regarded the "best" for black level but expensive...not sure if Sony has fixed their degradation issue, so only JVC is recommended. LCD tech has improved a lot...look towards Epson, Panasonic has been quiet. "Cheap" native 4K DLP from Optoma has just been launched, FHD DLP from Optoma, Benq, are quite good too. So really depends what is important to you...a "con" may be immaterial for your usage...

BB. White/light gray is best for a dark room. Your case may call for an ambient light rejection screen...the grayness and gain depends on how bright your room and projector are...good ones are not cheap so most folks are better off with black-out curtains.

CC. 1080p projector, 3.5k to 20k, mid range 6-8k. Screen, 1k to 10k. What's in your wallet?

Only if you subscribe to Amazon video and/or other US providers, & VPN to the USA.

I don't have direct experience, but do have a Kindle Fire tablet, so can understand the issues people complained about the Firestick.

8-12 hrs a day...you're better off with a TV...seriously... laugh.gif

Cheaper projectors doesn't have the contrast and brightness for HDR comparable from 4K TV...the technology moves a bit differently and slowly due to different constraints...

Projector is for a totally different, immersive experience...4K TV is for counting pimples and hair follicles... biggrin.gif

ya, i know there r sellers of such.

and i know netflix usa is still gettable for some.

just that i hv not, not once, read someone said can pay subscription (with some VPN) to get HBO, Amazon, Hulu - get what people in USA get.
*
VPN is like a super highway / tunnel... links you with a server in the USA for example...once you reach there, you can go Disneyland, Universal Studio, Las Vegas, etc. You pay toll to get there... then you pay entrance fee for the others... understand?

When they ask who are you...the VPN server/service answer on your behalf...from USA...

i understand, not stupid.

just that i hv not read ONE guy saying he did all that, hv u?

only netflix, just netflix, not the rest.
*
Sorry bro. Not trying to imply that...just doing an ELI5 biggrin.gif

I've used VPN before and it "unlocks" many sites...just never subscribe to Netflix, Directv, Slingtv, Xfinity, etc...

You want direct proof...the VPN/IPTV seller's thread will probably have the answer you're looking for. They subscribe others too. Normally people subscribe the most value for money Netflix, unless they also want live tv...a lot also have friends n relative in the USA/UK so they just get VPN and share TV access...

i doubt u did not know the context when u used this word.

i suggest u use that word carefully.

i use it only when i scold my staff or be condescending.
someone asked if amazon firetv is good. this device is good for amazon, hbo, hulu, etc., not just netflix - in USA.

so, i am looking for evidence of that HERE, TODAY.

2 years ago, i tried it, cannot get hulu.

netflix, there is a thread, everyone knows, i hv used it but not anymore.

up till now, no one has said he can get hulu-amazon-hbo like in USA.

unless YOU have used it, u cannot be sure, can u?

it is possible netflix is still a bit "loose" but not the others; possible high price; possible poor video/audio quality.

that was what i was asking, not about how the internet works.

You don't have to update to V18 you know...I suspect somebody will have a 32 bit fork...

Hi there, a quick question for a noobie here. I plan to remove astro away from my house as it's costing a bomb every month.

drRK has some awesome review and detail information on internet streaming boxes. But in your opinion, which box is the most value for money?

HiMedia seems to be on top of quality.. honestly, a noobie like me tend to lean towards mibox as it's much famous but i reckon you guys will know much better.
