what do u plan to do with it?

rm300... can get something - read page 1 suggestions.

tech moves fast.. the main trouble with used/old boxes is the android version.

get 5.1 or higher.

below that, certain things do not work or dun work well... u will eventually get frustrated.

if u know kodi already, then get a box at least android 5.0.

that is a requirement for kodi 17 to work.

below 5, can still use kodi 16 but over time, can expect more and more addons to phase out.

i would think all boxes, cheap or expensive will work with kodi.

but i can't comment on the specifics as i have not used the cheapest boxes...

if u do a lot of playback of high quality videos incl 1080p, 4k, hdr, the box fits with the tv well.

more so if u have a 4k hdr avr for home theater with hd audio.

in contrast, if u only playback sd stuff or use low level apps, both box and tv will be overkill!

What price and specs is this one?

the specs and price look fine to me.

when uninstalling kodi, it can take a minute or 2 depending on how big yr build is.

do keep us informed if u eventually find the box ok for most purposes.

unless the firmware is half cooked, i wud think it will work fine!

actually, i m curious... why do u need additional 64gb sd card?

for operational purposes, 8gb is still fine alto 16 or 32 is better.

unless u are storing big video files in it?

Well, its like instead of getting a proper lorry, u choose to get a 70cc moped fitted with 2 or 3 more wheels to carry a heavy load!

i hv also been reading and checking what makes it work and not work.

.. minix - u1 and x8h said to work.
.. hypptv - some say work, some say dun work.
.. mibox int'l - some say work, some say dun; some suspect due to leanback keyboard, some say that doesn't help.
.. himedia older boxes - unrooted box still give "yr box is rooted"; q10pro can install app, but the video will simply not load.
.. my tv's androidtv - it works; have not read anything if other androidtv or smart tv works.

can't deduce much from above...

if u spent yr time writing, taking photos, posting here on another job, u would hv earned rm500 to buy a new box.

if u r used to acryan pohd or mini, let me guess... u probably...

.. r used to direct playback with a native player of a box like acryan pohd.
.. like fast start up, go straight to "file manager" or "media player", click and play.
.. like the idea of it able to play all types of files, incl bluray iso.

most premium android boxes can do all that.

however, some android boxes do not have a native player like found in acryan pohd but uses another app player while some have.
the current acryan veolo (android) does NOT have a native player like acryan pohd but uses another app player.

if u r looking or those aspects i mentioned above, do check on the player and file type capabilities, video and audio, in detail.

but i think that "dark screen" issue is real.

as a rule... "good things no cheap, cheap things no good".

although sometimes there are relatively cheap devices that work fine depending on yr demands.

there is also the question of how good and how long the support will last.

you can buy from online stores, from shop, from it centers, from sellers in LYN.

the last one, u can visit the individual "brand" threads, pm some of the users, ask for comments.

few like to openly promote a certain seller.

ya, this can vary from user to user.

the trouble is many new users do not know if they REALLY want this and that or not?!

it is compounded by a previous experience with another kind of box/player if any.

several times, i have read the user said the picture quality of the new box is not as good as his 7 year old ac ryan or wdlive for playback.

if one has not used acryan or wdlive, one cannot compare, will not know.


someone like me who has used acryan and insist on hd audio playback will never buy a cheap box.

whereas someone who has never used any box, has a small tv and do not need good audio should be happy enough with most boxes.

but spending a bit more can provide the assurance that it will serve current and future (3 years) needs well.

so, the onus is on the buyer to read, ask questions and run with it!

Something for old android box users to consider, plan...

I see a quite a lot of new videos now cominng out in hevc or h265 format.

Hevc is an efficient compression format, uses half that of h264.

There has been continuous upgrades and new versions for hevc.

Personally, i have noticed that over the last year or so, a couple of my older devices that could play or stream hevc in the past can no longer do that with the latest hevc videos... either no video or no audio.

It is probably due newer n newer versions coming out.

So, do upgrade yr boxes as and when u find necessary!
