ok, about the malicious subs... done my part...

kodi... use 17.2
popcorntime.sh... already on 2.9, ok.

QUOTE
The team behind PopcornTime.sh applied a fix several months ago after the researchers approached them, TorrentFreak is informed. The Popcorn Time team trusts their subtitle provider OpenSubtitles but says that it now sanitizes malicious subtitle files, also those that are added by users.

others online subs download... disable feature or just don't use it.

safe for now, i guess. biggrin.gif

Personally, i dun hv that much at risk other than the android boxes.

I never use the boxes for anything other than entertainment, not even browsing.

And i dont use kodi, popcorn, vlc subs on my pc.

Handphone n tablet, no entertainment apps.

Always to separate the purposes.

Exactly.. Separation is important... Except I'm guilty of VLC & Kodi on the PC.. Luckily I don't download subs on them. sweat.gif

Want to ask...

I have been using an old himedia q3ii for watching movie files from my HDD...

Would I be able to use those OTT units like MXQpro, etc to do the same thing as well?

It's like these himedia's are categorised as Android TV box, while another are called OTTs...

What are the difference of Android vs OTT?

Yes.

OTT = over the top == IPTV, etc... as opposed to traditional over the air transmission

OTT is generic term...

Thinking of replacing my aging Pi2 (running with OSMC Kodi)

What's the current recommendation?

Is Mi Box 3S any good in sideloading Kodi as well as future proofing for 4K HDR Signal?

Since new TV is 4K HDR set.

I'd skip the current gen MiBoxes and go for a Minix Neo U9-H device instead.. Far Kodi friendly and guaranteed to be future-proof (reasonably)... If budget is no concern, the Nvidia Shield TV box (V1/V2) still remains top dog.

for a start, read pages 1-2.

there aren't much 4k, HDR stuff to stream online, kodi or other apps.
however, if u playback 4k/HDR files, many boxes can do that.
the specs will tell u; actual performance and video quality may vary.
u did not mention audio, so i assume u do not need hd audio - dtshdma, ddtruhd, ddatmos, dtsx.
hd audio is possible with only certain brands and models, not all.

I wonder which has the better picture quality... U9-H/U1 or Q10/Q5 pro?

I know the Himedias have extra picture tweaking ability via imprex settings...have not seen any such settings for the Minix, but this doesn't mean much if its picture is already great.

The only person that I know who has both boxes is JayceOoi...care to comment?

Anyone else seen such shoot-out/comparison?

ya, that will be good for potential buyers.

price - both same, rm600 thereabout.

but wait...!

these 2 need to shootout with 2 more! biggrin.gif

Egreat A10
Ziddo X10

Both have similar specs to the other 2, but price... both rm1000 thereabout.

there are always differences, incl aesthetics... just the buyers know what they are buying and not buying.

There have been comparisons and so far the Minix Neo U9-H comes out on top where firmware and apps compatibility are concerned.. PQ..? Hmm, that's trickier cuz based off my experiences with Minix's flagship models, the PQ only really gets better after a couple firmware updates. Haven't seen em both in person yet, but based on feedback, the HiMedia Q10 Pro has more customization options and theoretically ATM, better PQ than the Neo U9-H.

I have read that the HiMedia Q10 Pro has issues with HDR files.. Also, I'm a Kodi guy and it's public knowledge that Kodi works far better on the Minix Neo U9-H.. Even better on the Minix Neo U1 than the HiMedia Q10 Pro. So there's that too. smile.gif

A shootout would be welcome. Though at RM1K? I'll rather top up and get the Nvidia Shield TV 2.. Enjoy the best.

voncrane, AVFAN...

On Kodi forum, someone did a quick PQ comparison... he said can't tell much difference between U9-H, Shield, Mi Box, X9S...but he said will do a more in depth one... I'm slowly going through the next 100 odd posts... I think Q10 vs U9 is enough laugh.gif no need A10 & X10

My friend came back for a visit from the USA...just can't bring myself to get the Shield yet... probably just delaying the inevitable... lol...

if just about picture quality, one can only tell the difference using same 4k or 4k hdr tv and playing back the best files.

for common <10gb movie files and online streams on a 1080p tv, i don't think one can see or say much.

if someone will lend me a u9, i can test. laugh.gif

I would have no issues getting the Nvidia Shield... Just that have to upgrade current AV equipment to take full advantage of it. Else it'd be a waste.. Made the "mistake" of purchasing equipment back in 2014, just before everything got significantly cheaper. cry.gif.. So now, waiting as long as possible and hopefully, OLED drops to within my budget.. brows.gif

Precisely, don't forget the TV too.. Has to be a really good one and not some entry-level HDR model.
