Looks like new player, S905X 2gb/16gb, no DTS capability..... Entry level for under RM200, could have been lower if not bcos of our pathetic currency

Anyone?
*
Better don't let certain people read about the currency being pathetic.. tongue.gif Many of these "unknown" boxes are basically the same thing. Just rebranded and packaged..

I just going through Kodi for Dummies installation from TV addons, I find that they recommend for paid debrid service. My questions:
1) What is that?
2) In Malaysia is it worth it? I on unifi pro 30
*
In addition to what GuyM posted..
RD FAQ.
Only you can answer that. I.e. Some say having a Netflix account is not worth it.. I say it is cuz it's Netflix... I'm happy, HM is happy.. all's good... So start with free and if you feel it's worth coughing up the lil extra?? Go ahead.

QUOTE(GuyM @ Apr 19 2017, 08:46 AM)
Lol.... It's the reality

Rebranded or not, there's always the few who are willing to try in their attempt to venture into this space b4 moving up😇

Furthermore I personally think most entry level box with S905x are much stable and trouble free for beginners. Do not need to mod from kancil to BMW 😁
*
Yeah, the Kancil is stable and trouble-free till one gets used to it and wants to drive it like a BMW... Not matter the mods, it'll surely break down and guess what?? You begin to hate the kancil and who know.. All Perodua vehicles.... So if in the beginning, can afford the BMW straightaway & sleep better at night... Why not? biggrin.gif

QUOTE(AVFAN @ Apr 19 2017, 09:58 AM)
there is somewhat of a conflict for beginners to choose the "right" box.

if totally new, hard to justify spending big bucks.

but it is usually the big bucks boxes that are well made, less problematic and with good support that allows the user to learn fast! biggrin.gif

so, RM200 or RM600 or RM1600?

perhaps, the best answer is a "middle of the road" box say rm300-400, many users already, can get some help in forums.

but what particular brand or model would that be?

i look back 5 years when i bought my first box - "premium" (at that time) but had no support.

i had no idea about streaming at all but was sure i wanted a box that can playback dtshdma for my home theater.

the good thing was the box was well made, stable firmware, did not give strange problems.

so whatever tip i got from anywhere and anyone was useful.

of course, many hours of work before finally "getting it".

well for me...since android box is like android phone (minus the screen),
i'll just go whichever cheaper+better specced (and latest software version)
and reason i go down to box below 300...same case as my cheap sub-300 android tablet.....

just dump that thing if it was broken.. laugh.gif
*
For simple needs? yes.. For more, nthg beats a premium device.. Not convinced? Go hold the Samsung S8/S8+, and compare build quality alone with that of a sub RM1000 phone.. nod.gif

Is the Himedia Q10 Pro overkill for a Samsung UA55KU6000? It is a 4K, 8 bit TV, with "HDR".

If it is, what should I head for? the Minux still overkill?
*
Neither HiMedia' or Minix' flagship devices are overkill for the TV. Question you should ask yourself is if they are overkill for your requirements. Personally, I love me a really good flagship device.. Power on, do my biz, put back on standby or shutdown.. Zero issues.

QUOTE(biggie @ Apr 23 2017, 07:25 AM)
Thank you will do that. I think the slowdown is only on the initial startup as now the system seems to be responsive.

A slow down is the least of biggie's worries... What he should be concerned about is a complete card failure and hope critical system files aren't on it.. Cuz then, system failure.. Most commonly available SD Cards aren't cut out for constant fast read and write speeds as required by the firmware... Only good for occasional read and writes. A UHS Speed Class 3 (UHS-II) should handle such better..

Seriously that is something I do worry, I have 3, 64gb Kingston card which I believe genuine, one inside my s7e as external, another on tab 8 and another on km8 pro. Finger crossed that none failed. Another pny 128g on my laptop.

I have some experience with quite a number of non-genuine cards that failed or do not display their advertised storage value, so after that lesson I always take care in buying these cards.
*
Ah, hopefully your homework pays off.

QUOTE(AVFAN @ Apr 23 2017, 02:12 PM)
actually, i m curious... why do u need additional 64gb sd card?

for operational purposes, 8gb is still fine alto 16 or 32 is better.

unless u are storing big video files in it?
*
One of the reasons is for those who would like to have more "internal" storage for more apps with bigger data. Take some games like Asphalt Airborne for instance, easily over 1GB each. Pile on 2 or more heavy kodi installs, etc and that free 8gb or so fills up pretty fast. smile.gif

Personally, I'd like to see these devices ship with at least 32GB as standard... Even 64GB.. eMMC memory is way cheaper now than it used to be. Having just 16GB now doesn't really cut it except for those with very simple plug and play needs.. Which I realize is the bulk of buyers out there and so can't blame the manufacturers for buying less memory and charging premium.

Interesting..someone finally pulled the trigger on a Ubox. Coukd you give a bit more info on its performance? As for the lag issue, have you ruled out that it isn't a WiFi or insufficient Internet issue?

Performance wise i hardly can tell coz this is my first BOX. I think it perform the same as others and the rest of the apps like RSS watching HK drama or some others APPS watching movies. All this I think you can get it from other BOX as well. The Lagging part  i dont think is WIFI problem because if I watch movies there no problem. I'm new on this so I'm not sure whats wrong, is there anyone here encounter this problem when watching LIVE football match or any other APPS can do a better job on UBOX?
*
I see.. Well, when it comes to live TV.. It's a bit of hit and miss. As it depends on the servers you are streaming from. An overloaded server can only serve so many clients before kicking a few off or buffering. Could also be an app issue too. Unfortunately, I can't be of further assistance with such. Beyond that there are better sources out there and the work great on better boxes too... Apparently, we are officially being monitored.. tongue.gif
Thanks for the mini review. Should help others.

I'm thinking of getting this...

Why?
1. Remix OS - something different
2. No Root - maybe can play aotg
3. 2/32GB - plenty storage!
4. On sale $50

S905, Android 5.1, b/g/n/ac, bt...

Cons: not popular - most likely no more firmware updates (no problem if no big bugs), only 2 USB ports, 5GHz weak (me only 2.5GHz so still OK)...

Anyone got this?
*
Doesn't seem to be officially supported by the Remix guys.. No?..
Remix OS is indeed refreshing... Though only time will tell how long they'll last especially as they currently do not have as much backing as Cyanogenmod did..Yet, that had to close shop.

IO+ needs to wait until Q4...
*
QUOTE(dwRK @ Apr 24 2017, 07:50 PM)
Yeah...RK & 7.1 problem I think...
*
Yup... Even the Remix IO+ looks to be obsolete on arrival despite using Rockchip’s latest hexacore RK3399. While it's better than AMLogic's S912 processor, the RK3399 lacks TV box-ish features such as HDR. Not so good when it's the rage now.. Also doubt it supports Dolby Vision either and software can't help with such.. Well, at it's current price point, might be worth it to its target audience.

Wonder what AMLogic's currently cooking up?? My major concern is full Kodi compatibility everything... 2018 should be interesting... Mooaarr Power... brows.gif

Edit: Is this the device... Vensmile U1 TV Box? Looks to be running Remix 2.0. V3.0 was released November last year. Hope it at least gets an upgrade to that... For $50, one gets almost similar specs to the Neo U1 (U1 is still better).. Not bad..

Well...its always already obsolete when we buy IT toys... laugh.gif

I think the RK3399 is more for Chromebox/book & Android PC than for TV box. It's expensive when sold as such, and lacking HDR & 7.1 passthrough...the Mi Box 3 enhance, just as powerful & a bit more crippled, is only RM300 while these new boxes are close to doubling that for only a bit more ram/rom... I think these will be discounted soon enough...

Yes that is the device. Don't think it will ever get V3 but who knows...
*
Ah, but at least with most devices, one gets a few months or more to reign (take the Nvidia Shield TV Box for example).. The Remix with RK3399 in Q4 is super-obsolete.. What to do.. Must have new toys and manufacturers always manage to leave out one or more crucial features.. All I want is that one perfect inexpensive box. biggrin.gif

Yes.. I'm still waiting on a proper smartphone - PC - TV experience.. A light and portable device that seamlessly switches across functions.. The Remix OS holds promise in that department.. I wish em luck.. Google could probably pull it off..

Yes..

IMO... With AOTG, while how the app checks for root/compatibility counts, it's mainly about the firmware. The Minix devs actively work on their firmware to make it compatible to as many apps out there as possible. On the official forum, there's a dedicated thread where owners can make requests and provide login details (privately of course). If enough people request a particular app and or it can be made compatible, they do so and push it out in the next update..

Need to first find out if your device's firmware can handle an attached camera. Get one of the Logitech USB cameras. Logitech products tend to be friendly to the Android OS.. Cuz standardization.
