Hi guys, how to calculate return based on nav yea? is it correct if i take each month-end nav for 12 months then divide by 12?
*
QUOTE(MUM @ Jul 20 2018, 12:57 AM)
hmm.gif why do you need to divide by 12? will that past performance gonna repeats the next months?

just a note.....if that fund has dividend distribution policy...that fund's NAV performance is not a good indicator of that fund's returns.
*
QUOTE(Jebsee @ Jul 20 2018, 01:36 AM)
im finding average return, and i have no clue and btw it is about my assgnmnt  notworthy.gif  icon_rolleyes.gif
*
just a note also....
"When judging the overall performance of a mutual fund, always look at the fund’s total return instead of just the changes in its NAV.
Distributions made by the fund may reduce the fund’s NAV but they still belong as part of the shareholder’s overall return.
Viewing returns in this manner gives a more accurate depiction of a fund’s success"

quite high about 25 to 30% cos last time is very good i focus on it

In Feb 2017,...FSM did has an article on this fund....
at the very end of it, it did mentioned,
"......Interested investors can consider to include the fund into the supplementary part of their portfolios, with not more than 10% allocation of their overall portfolios. "

https://www.fundsupermart.com.my/main/resea...uary-2017--7950

anyway,...most would just say.....if you are still young and have a good risk appetite and this UT investment portfolio is not your only investment....then can go big or go home thumbup.gif

no right or wrong....maybe circumstances changes and this period of lower than expected performance will helps you to realign and relects on your investment's selection perspective.

as per FSM suggestion.

same thing here again.....at the end of the article.....

"However, investors should also bear in mind that both the funds have a concentrated exposure in the local small to mid-cap stocks, hence, we would like to advise investors to include the fund as part of their supplementary portfolios, with not more than 10% allocation of their overall portfolios."

anyway,...most would just say.....if you are still young and have a good risk appetite and if this UT investment portfolio is not your only investment....then can go big or go home

problem with unit trust is that we can’t give a good evaluation of its performance other than past history. fund manager can buy any stock which you cannot control.

in comparison buying stocks of company we have better evaluation in the stock we are buying based on the stock price and evaluation of the company management and profit etc
*
isn't the FMs is buying into the notion as highlighted in RED too?

and also FMs has more indepth info of the actual plants(entities) itself than just referring to the financial reports

ya but we are rely on fund manager actions which make wrong decision sometimes and make big loss like affin hwang. last time buy correct stock then good. now buy wrong stock we can’t do anything and no control what he buy. if noob then die us.
*
investment involves risk.....
FMs are human like other punters too.

at least they are guided by some kind of guidelines and risk evaluation team and a bunch of other stuffs that will not so rely on a single man decision making effort (which can be emotionally based)

22% of 67% = 14.7%

33% of GTF is in US
16% of 33% = 5%

thus about 20% of my port will be in US (20% is too much for US?)  hmm.gif (will consider  ...)
REMOVE GTF, move to individual JPN 8% and European fund 8% and will then have 15% in US?  hmm.gif  hmm.gif

India has very high 3 yrs volatily %
i have 22% of my port in Affin Hwang Asia X Jpn opportunity, 13% in KGF, 5% in Spore......that will have big coverage in ASEAN

If I’m not mistaken, seems like FSM Singapore and Hong Kong’s managed portfolio performing way better than FSM Malaysia, tho they are same company.

Past few weeks more and more start to grumble on their managed portfolio’s performance. Including my cousin too, holding balanced port from day 1 FSM introduce it with some promotion, so far return just 3.5% something...

Perhaps Malaysia’s team not really doing great job as compared to their peers..

Agree with you on stashaway.. jus tht I’m curious whether Malaysia’s Stashaway team capable to performe as their Singapore team... coz in FSM, they can’t..

Wats your say Ramjade? Maybe others hv different view

hmm.gif perhaps too......there are only a limited number of worthi horses available to choose from in FSM MY compared FSM SG and FSM HK?

Are You a Myopic Investor?

The Myopic Investor
– blindsided by temporary losses, they were unable to look at the longer horizon and unable to figure out the better choice.

In 1995, Benartzi and Thaler came up with myopic loss aversion (MLA) to explain the equity premium puzzle, where the S&P 500 earned over 6 percent annually more than Treasury bills from the studied period of 1889 to 1978.
MLA combines two factors – loss aversion and mental accounting. The former is explained above, while mental accounting deals with aggregation – whether securities are evaluated individually or as a portfolio, and how often they are evaluated. They defined a myopic investor as one who frames decisions and outcomes narrowly, i.e., making short-term choices rather than adopting long-term policies, and evaluating his gains and losses frequently.

actually i am having Aberdeen islamic world equity 50% and EI equity income fund 50%, 1k each.
i am clueless if we MUST have a portfolio of different type and region of UT and consist of bond and equity?
how long we need to hold only then conclude that the return of UT is not good and switch to other UT?

"EMB don't enter" -> meaning all emerging market UT or EI global emerging markets fund?
"India 5%" -> which UT?
"ManuReits (suggest if can enter REITS directly better)" -> enter directly to REITS listed in BURSA?
*
Q: i am clueless if we MUST have a portfolio of different type and region of UT and consist of bond and equity?
bond and equity ratio in a port will determine type of risk appetite the investor wanted...as per Step 1
different type of fund and regions will determine the type of diversification the investor wanted in the port....as in Step 2

https://secure.fundsupermart.com/fsm/articl...ing-a-portfolio

Q: how long we need to hold only then conclude that the return of UT is not good and switch to other UT?
after a predetermined period (ex, a year or 18 months)......then compare their performance against other fund of "similar" mandate, to determine the performance.

so far my prediction for August will downwards trend comes true...
*
just saw this....

"Studying the monthly returns of the MSCI AC Asia ex Japan Index in August dating from 1988 to 2017, empirical data tells us that perhaps there is something seasonal about August.
Two-thirds of the time investors are likely to suffer a negative return during August, with median and average losses ranging from 4%-6% respectively.

Even if we exclude periods of turbulent markets resulting from the onset of financial crises such as the Asian Financial Crisis (1997-98), Dot com bubble (2000), and the Great Financial Crisis (2008-09), the results show that markets still tends to be in the red 60% of the time during the month.

What about the month September?"...read more at

Again, few weeks ago, there had been curses about Trump and his action...

Today FSM MY came out with this.....

"The difficult part about investing in volatile asset classes such as emerging market equities is that they can drive investors nuts with their inconsistency. On the flip side, the good part about investing in volatile asset classes is they offer plenty of buying opportunities.

Unfortunately, when markets are tanking and portfolios are bleeding, it’s always easier for investors to tell themselves it’s going to fall even further.

“I’ll just buy when I see less noises from the market, or when Trump stops his disrupting tweets…”

If history is any guide, emerging markets are rarely calm. The gains in these developing nations can be infrequent, yet large at times. The losses can be frequent and painful. Investors might not find a pleasant investment experience within the emerging equities’ landscape, ....
