I guess my female hamster is sick since this morning because suddenly she is like very weak and her eyes cannot even open, movement wise is slowed down and no energy.... Anybody knows what is the root cause for the problem?  icon_question.gif
*
Lack of appetite, eyes stuck together.... your hamster is showing the signs of being very sick. Could be pneumonia or a viral infection. PLease bring to a vet quickly or you risk losing it soon.

Do like what joanalooidog said, separate it and place in a small cage or carrier with tissue.... keep in a warm place and feed it water. Water is more important than food.

Also, you must know that hamsters are small, the smaller their bodies, the faster the sickness can spread.... so.... you also must toughen yourself for worst case scenario like the hamster dying.... It is a normal thing.

Change to tissue. The hamster is having problems with the wood. Better you change the bedding to corncob now or Breeder's Celect.

corncob now ? Breeder's Celect?..what is that..sorry..i am very new in this so dun have any ideas..
*
Corncob is made out of the hard part of the corn that we never eat. It is also ok for allergies.... Breeder's Celect is recycled newspaper, RM22 for 1 bag, can find at Pet Family, Pet Safari, Pet Lovers Center and certain petshops only.... Corn cob can be found easily in petshops that sell small animals.

Erm.... you bred your hamsters? How long since the breeding? You will notice the hamster eating more, drinking more and looking rounder than usual. She will also start build a nest or prepare a place to hide....

A hamster that is about to birth would find a corner of the cage or tank to make it secure. She would use tissue paper and hay to form a well or like low walls.... something like that. It doesn't look like a bird nest.

You seriously should not breed if you have not read up on breeding. There are so many hamster websites online that got caresheets and tips on breeding.

Please change from cage to a storage box or tank.... We should never let hamsters give birth in cages for there is a risk where the babies can get hurt or the mom gets injured....

Sigh... why you buy 2 to breed? Can you handle buying 3 more tanks or cages? 1 for mom, 1 for dad, 1 for male babies and 1 for female babies? Their gestation is 18 to 21 days, each litter is about 4 to 8 babies, they can mate and produce babies in every 21 days.... is that a life for a hamster?

If you bring inside a pouch, you will stress the hamster alot. Maybe suffocate also since pouch got not much air. Hamsters overheat easily. Hamsters are a life lah.... to just buy a pair and breed for the fun of it without doing proper research or thinking about the amount of breeding and death that might occur is quite..... irresponsible....

If you want them to breed, you better set aside money to buy more cages and food. If you bought the hamsters from the same place, they could be siblings... and inbreeding can cause behaviour problems and also genetic disorders or deformity.... Hamster will not feel lonely if kept separately. I suggest, if you cannot cope with breeding, please separate them now....

I think it is more where people put human emotions together.... A hamster can live in small groups(Only Robos and RCs) but it has to have a VERY large space or they will fight. Winter Whites are more likely to fight when in groups.... this is why we always advice people, only get 1 if just want a pet.... the most also 2 but same sex.... but... sigh.... all also put human emotions together and all also listen to petshops....

Well... one is we are all concern.... if you place 2 females with a male.... we will of course ask are you prepared? So just answer yes lah.....

Coz there are a number of them breeding because:

I wanna see baby hamsters, so cute!
I want my hamsters to have a family.
My gf/bf said we should breed the hamsters.
I don't want gay or lesbian hamsters.
I want my pair to have some fun.
I want to earn some extra cash.

Also, with petshops not advising them properly, sadly, many people are doing that. Many also are inbreeding without knowledge....

I'm not against breeding coz I do breed with an aim, to produce tame RCs.... where can find tame RCs these days? But I am against the people who breed because of those reasons above.... If you are prepared, I would say bravo.

For the extra cash thing.... I got really angry at a friend.... came up to me asking if I got hamsters for her or not because she wants to start a hamster business.... WHAT? Business???!!! Firstly, when we are truly breeding to produce quality hamsters, there are no profits at all.... All the money from the hamsters goes back to their food, tanks and bedding.... not cheap rite? So when I told that friend that she would lose more money than make any... she was like "What? Really? Then I don't want to waste money and time lah...".... Man... got people think like that wan....

So this is why some members here will ask "why are you breed?" or "Are you prepared?"... so you just answer them lah.... no harm. If we notice that you are breeding with knowledge and research, then we will respect you.

You better not do such an exchange again..... that is so unnatural lah. Never place the father with the babies coz some males are known to kill the babies. I can only say you have been extremely lucky. Also, you should not separate the mom before they turn 5 weeks..... please, just leave them as they are. The female is kicking them away to teach them to be independent.

it's ok... once they open their eyes, it's the time where they explore their taste buds... they will even put their mom's poop into their mouths to taste... so it's normal.
