Just recently, a group of students from Ukraine (Msian) came and did elective in Hospital Melaka. When i talked to one of them, he told me they got screwed by the HOD of Surgery in Melaka GH on their first day of posting, just because they are from Ukraine. Seriously, pity them.
Btw, are they really that incompetent? I have seen some really good ones working in other departments. sweat.gif

msians students do NOT usually get into the top indian med schools. places are few, and it is very difficult to get in.......the most popular ones are like manipal, kastuba etc, which as a measure of quailty, are not in the list of recognised indian med schools in spore (smc: https://www.smc.gov.sg/html/1153709442948.html)........

KMC Manipal is consistently being ranked top 10 in India. Quality might not be as good as AIIMS but is pretty solid if you ask me. It's weird that Singapore recognizes medical colleges which are ranked lower than Manipal.

Btw, from what i've observed, not all good medical schools are recognized by Singapore, eg medical schools in Taiwan (only 2 medical schools are recognized so far)

I think what blackrobin meant was he has the results but not the moolah

Btw, out of curiosity, is there any OZ med school taking in students with SAM TER 95?

Btw, blackrobin, are you on JPA scholarship? MMMC is now filled with JPA scholarship students. Self funded students have less places allocated for them.

If you have a choice, better take full course KMC Manipal, as the syllabus is USMLE oriented.
MMMC is not bad, but it pales in comparison to KMC Manipal. If i were to be given a choice again, i'll definitely choose KMC.

Wow, are you serious? Suddenly so expensive de?
4 years ago when i first joined MMMC, KMC's tuition fee was cheaper than MMMC by RM80K.

But wouldn't it be better if u can follow the USMLE style in KMC (as wat hyperax said) and sit for it, then can go US lor (provided u got very good score lar).
*
Hey there, long time no see, how life in NUS?
Btw, is hypermax, not hyperax (sounds like hyperass biggrin.gif )
well, total school fee for KMC is near 400k. I seriously dun think that's worth for an Indian school.
Also, one can always take up course for USMLE after he/she graduates. Cheaper too.

Yeah, entry into NUS is very competitive, in fact more competitive than that of UK, and maybe OZ.

hmm, can i ask right, is the 2 years HO+ 3 years MO compulsory for MMMC student? or u can get out of it anytime u got an offer elsewhere, eg US residency.
Yup, it's the same for all local grads, no matter which college you graduated from. Yes, you can get out anytime you want for the offer. However, if you wanna practice in malaysia, you will have to come back and resume the gov service.

you can't choose where you do housemanship.........unless you have very good cables.......

Yeah, what i meant was better list the choices wisely. All fresh grads are given 3 choices if i am not mistaken. Depends on when you graduate. Most of my seniors got where they wanted (of course, Selangor is harder to get)

I see. Thanks for explaining. So i guess it is UKM, UM and USM. wink.gif

Well, i think chances of getting into university hospitals are slim, unless you have very long and solid cable.
However, many of my seniors got UKM and UM without pulling string. SO i guess it's all on your luck.

hi guys! (& gals)  tongue.gif

wow... missed so much on this thread while i've been away..
from wiki to quarrels to cables.. hehe..

been working for 6 weeks already..
spent the first 2 weeks tagging from 6.30am-12am, couldn't wait to go back & sleep...
kinda became a zombie by day 10..  sweat.gif

life as a HO is kinda fun, but damn tiring..
physically when you're running around getting things done..
mentally when things go wrong & you get screwed..  sad.gif

nevertheless, i believe that if you have a clear ambition about becoming a doctor...
& not just joining med school coz u scored 4.0....
then there's no prob surviving housemanship...

my colleagues who are really suffering are those who really have no heart in caring for patients...
they never really expected to have to slog so damn hard...
since their heads were kinda inflated by everyone calling them 'doctor'... tongue.gif

anyway, it's nice to have a life back...
haven't been online for weeks!  rclxm9.gif

Seriously the health care system in Msia sucks big time. Bad for both patients and doctors. Sleepy doctors make more mistake than they are fully awake.

i read in papers that MMMC is not recognized by india already, and malaysia may follow suit later
how the MMMC students generally respond to this?
*
Nope, not MMMC (twinning programme), but KMC (Full course in India). Both are of different degrees.
MMMC is still recognized by Msia.
Btw, KMC has yet to be officially de-recognized by India. The final verdict lies in the hand of Indian MoH, not Medical Council of India (MCI).

Manipal students will be looked after, says ministry
BY LOONG MENG YEE

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has assured local students in Manipal University that their welfare will be looked after.

“We are concerned about this matter. If need be, we will even consider credit transfers to allow our students complete their courses at other universities,” said Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai.

Liow was commenting on the Medical Council of India (MCI)'s announcement last week that it was no longer recognising the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees offered by Kasturba Medical Colleges in Manipal and Mangalore.

Liow asked the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) to seek further clarification from its counterpart in India over the decision.

He was speaking after launching Healthylimpics 2008 organised by health-product company Easy Pha-Max Marketing Sdn Bhd here Friday.

Manipal is popular among Malaysians students. Students at the Melaka Manipal Medical College do three years of clinical training in Malaysia and two years of pre-clinical in India.

Meanwhile, Manipal University pro-Chancellor Dr H.S. Ballal said the university was surprised by the “purported” statement from MCI because the matter was under consideration by higher authorities.

“Furthermore, MCI is only a recommendatory body and does not have the power to de-recognise an institute,” he said in a press statement.

He also stressed that Kasturba Medical College (KMC) fulfilled all inspection criteria specified by MCI – faculty quality, staff strength; teaching infrastructure; hospital infrastructure; hospital utilisation; student education and care facilities.

Ballal said KMC had been consistently featured amongst the top five medical colleges in India for the last few decades.

“Over 4000 alumni of KMC are senior practising physicians in the United States. Close to 3,000 doctors in Malaysia are KMC alumni. KMC is the only medical college in India that is also recognised by the New York State Education Board,” he said.

Also, MMMC is never recognised by Indian Medical Council...

yup, because MMMC is a Malaysian degree.

Also, both KMC manglore and manipal are still recognized. Check out the entries in IMED. The graduation years are still current.

QUOTE(limeuu @ Aug 14 2008, 11:58 PM)
i think we should let the manipal thread die, so i am transferring this info on the best practice principles for medical school student selection here.....

===============

1. Selection of medical students should firstly be based on academic merit. There are more than adequate number of potential candidates with interest and passion in the profession from a group of top 5% students in any cohort. (in msia, that is 10,000+ students)

2. From this group, final selection should be done based on applitude, attitude, interest, compassion and other attributes.

3. money should NOT be a factor in the selection process. The practice of buying places is bad.

4. developed countries are consistent in their selection and training process, based on 1, 2 and 3. and thus has the best record of consistent, quality med education....

5. ipta/ipts and many (not all) 3rd world schools suffer from selection and training (mostly assessment) issues, resulting in inconsistent quality of students and graduates.

6. Exceptions occur, but cannot be used as justification for allowing poorly qualified students to 'try' medical education.

Hence forth, we should call it the rukun limeuu.

It's fine to post your opinions, but posting the same thing over and over again? Dude, don't you get sick of it?

I am not sure what are you trying to achieve. It's like a propaganda to me.

i shall take it then that you agree with it.......

if you don't, i would like to hear which parts and why....

from what happened in the manipal thread tonight, you really lived up to you signature: emo max....

with that, i switch back to non-personal mode.....
*
Hmmm, i agree with all the points. However, many students whom qualified for medical studies are not being offered a place. Therefore, they can only resort to IPTS or 3rd world schools if they cannot afford 1st world.
Hence, my point is, dun assume students from IPTS are bad. Judge a person for what he is, not where he comes from.

Btw, i think someone from the 1st world school was more emo than me. brows.gif
