Geforce 940mx and AMD m430, which one is better?
I know 940mx is better on gaming, but how about movie?

1. Preferred brand : Any, not an Apple fan though.
2. Budget : Below 8K
3. Usage : daily usage (web, downloads), Photo Processing
4. Screen Size : 13-15" FHD or 4K
5. RAM : 16 GB
6. HDD : SSD + HDD (optional)
7. Appearance : Professional, non-gaming (no RED backlight or accents)
8. Laptop type: Laptop/2 in 1 no preference.

Need some advice for laptops with the specs above. A few I've considered XPS13, XPS 13 2in1, Surface Pro 4 (dunno when SP5 is out with 4k screen?), Zenbook, HP Spectre...

Hi all, planning to buy a new gaming laptop after realizing building a desktop wont cut it for me (will be travelling back and forth between 2 countries for the next 4 years) and have a ton of questions:

1. I plan to only play games at 1080p. That being said, is a laptop gtx 1070 overkill? I've settled on this card for my laptop but I want to see what others' opinions are.

2. i7-6700hq vs i7-7700hq vs i7-7820hk. I want the laptop to last as long as possible (4+ years) and have read things like people either going for 6700hq or 7280hk because 7700hq is a waste of money. Considering I want it to last long, 7820hk should be obvious answer la right? its unlocked and can oc in the future. Thoughts?

3. 60/75hz ips vs 120hz tn monitor; which one should i get?Bearing in mind i would be running a 7820hk and 1070. Tech rep from illegear says ips is recommended as "you wont hit 120fps anyway". Ips has better colours, tn runs like butter. I just want to play games. Also bear in mind both panels would have g sync, so now we have to think about the frame limiting below refresh rate and all that jazz. Then i think maybe 1070 is too much for 1080p 60hz panel as 1060 can do the job just fine. So then I consider 120hz but also at the same time very conflicted... thoughts? What would be the best gpu + panel combo for 1080p gaming? I just want to max out all (most) games and get at least 60fps, and get best value for money.

4. 15.6" or 17.3"? I first was settled on 15.6", as that's the biggest and heaviest kind of size I sanggup carry around, but became conflicted when I found out the s7 17.3" from illegear has a 75hz ips panel while the 15.6" only has 60hz ips panel. Any higher refresh rates for 15.6" would be the 120hz tn. I also started to consider that this laptop would stay mostly on a desk anyway, I wouldn't bring it around as I already have a zenbook that I can bring to class/library. The gaming laptop would be more like a desktop replacer at home or uni, never to be brought out of room except when moving between countries.

5. What is the difference between the dominator pro series and apache pro series from msi? I've compared two models, gt62vr from gt series (dominator) and ge62mvr from ge series (apache), both have same specs (7700hq and 1070, same memory, storage) but yet very different price. About 10.6k for GT62 and 8.9k for GE62. Can someone enlighten me how different these two are and why I should spend extra money for GT or save and get cheaper GE for same specs?

My budget is from 8k-11k, but I would like to have the best value I can and if possible not spend too much (11k is asking a lot already, but don't mind if the specs are good and can last long).

I'm considering either s5 or s7 (both kaby lake, i7 7700hq/7820hk and gtx 1070) from illegar or gt/ge series for msi. I don't really like the aesthetics for Alienware 15/17 and Asus g752vs looks way too heavy.

All in all, I just want a solid gaming laptop that can play 1080p high-max settings for modern games and lasts long. Please help me with my dilemmas above so I can make a well-informed decision. I've googled all the dilemmas above and keep getting conflicting views on the cpu, gpu and panel refresh rate.

1. gtx1070 is good enuf... especially if you want all games constant max fps on heavy games.

2. i7-6700hq is from skylake architecture meanwhile i7-7700hq and i7-7820hk is newer version which is kabylake and 7820 is slightly higher clock for single core. 7700 shud be enuf.. kabylake is fully optimized ddr4 memory performance.
regarding HQ processors be Overclocked or not....., yes, can be OC but they won't hold their clock speed very well. first thing, why you want OC it?

3. 120hz tn monitor is better for gaming

4. satisfaction. 17.3" is consider as desktop replacement

5. Apache series are thinner and slightly lower specs machines that try to emphasis portability, but really just cut your battery life down to nothing. since you're dealing with 17.3" laptops, you should basically expect battery life to go out the window and expect to be plugged in most of the time.

Illegear can be customized, and there is checking for dead pixel.

majority games on market kinda favor to nvdia card. its much better invest in nvdia card.

movie? even intel hd can hande 4k movie well. graphic card nothing much to do with movie..

GE72 only gtx 1060... gt 72 cost u over 10k...and weight wise new alienware more or else illegear and gt range... only way heavier than GS series

2. Ah, I see. So you wouldn't recommend the 7820hk? I was thinking about it because the capability to oc might be useful in the future if I want it to last longer and be up-to-date.

3. Is the colour that bad compared to IPS? Or does the smoothness make up for the colour drop? And what about the thing about not being able to hit 120fps anyway

4. hmmm, I'll have to physically compare myself to make a decision. I have a 15.6" asus n550jv that weighs 2.6kg, and I thought that that's the biggest and heaviest laptop I'll ever go for. I'll have to see how much bigger and heavier a 17.3" laptop is

5. I've definitely seen that written somewhere else before, on a forum or something. Regardless, I think the point still stands, the price drop is due to the shorter battery life and smaller build which somehow leads to less performance or something like that, right?

I know about illegear, I've customized one too many laptops on their website, from 8k 1060 laptop to 11k i7-7820hk gtx 1070 laptop.

GE62 (15.6" model) has gtx 1070; MSI Malaysia page, NCS online store, and 11street page lists it as having 1070, at only 8.8k compared to other brands/models that have 1070 laptop for considerably more.

Why would GT series cost so much more than GE? Quite weary about making a purchase on a GE for the same specs at lower price... Regardless of the weight, I think the asus isn't very aesthetically pleasing. Illegear with same size/weight however looks more sleek and not just for gaming. My personal opinion. Anyway thank you

GE is inspiron 7567 grade.. entry level gaming.. or asus GL502 grade.. let me tell u 1st...

2. well... its up to you. but performance not much different. OC might be useful? interesting.. explain futher, why and its kinda opposite with your expectation in reality.

3. erm, color not that bad for me but of cz... IPS > TN in terms of color. IPS is frequently preferred by graphics professionals because it has superior colour accuracy and contrast to TN (although VA has better contrast still). It frequently also has better color range (gamut) but much of this is because historically IPS has been used in more expensive, higher-end monitors, and are therefore paired with better components overall.

4. better performance = power hungry = less battery for day works. but, these days. what you needs and how you fully utilized it will makes the different. simple.

hmm... even with the same specs as high end gaming laptops, (i7 7700hq and gtx 1070), being in the entry level series means its doesnt perform as well, has lower battery life, has bad cooling or what? Thank you for helping me sort of understand what kind of series/level it's on, but does that mean it won't perform as well as a gt with the same 7700hq cpu and 1070 gpu? Or is it the build quality and other factors of the gt that make it more expensive (and higher level)?

Haha, what I mean by that is maybe in the future when games get more cpu intensive and require faster cpu to run comfortably, or in any other future situation where I might need higher clock speed, I have the option to oc the hk cpu, and thus wont have to buy new laptop with faster cpu. In all honesty I don't know a lot about oc and whether or not I need it, this is just my thought. But, if you're convincing me that 7700hq is just fine, then good la, I don't have to pay so much for hk cpu so you sure 7700hq is enough, hk is overkill?

3. hmm... again, I think I have to compare in-store to really decide IPS and TN. To you, personally, smoothness (refresh rate difference) more important than colour accuracy right? That's why 120hz tn > 60hz ips. It's just a personal dilemma that I can't really seem to settle on. The illegear s5 has a 60hz ips option (standard price) and 120hz 5ms tn option for additional rm449. Can't seem to decide

4. I think you're referring to the MSI question right? Point no 5? Hmm, I think all things considered I really have to think about investing in the mid range GE laptop... it seems the price is too good for its specs. Battery life shouldnt be too much of a problem because like I mentioned this will be more of a desktop replacer, so it will remain plugged in on the table.

Thank you for the suggestion. I've seen the 502, very nice, slim and light, but I think I've decided on a 1070 card (which the 502 doesn't have an option for).
