Hi sifus,

Planning to buy my first ever laptop within the next few days as I'm out of the house a lot now and no chance to use my desktop d....

(desktop bought in 2015 - i5 4460, 8gb ram, Asus mobo b85mg, intergrated graphics)

Going to lowyat for look see look see 2moro but best know what I'm looking for first.... otws sure will be walking around like headless chicken
1. Preferred brand :
any , as long specs gives best bang for bucks
(1 that is durable and has reputation that lasts)
(so far few friend mentioned ASUS )
(Read through some of the stickies and gathered a few brand names which garnered bad feedbacks but will not bring up here, so not to spoil this thread )

2. Budget :
2.5k maxxxxx
(Don't mind spending a bit more as long as I can stretch my ringgit (durable and can last the extra few years)

3. Usage :
home/ use a lot of internet browsing/ work (Microsoft office) / light gaming .. though I don't even play any games on my desktop, but just in case tongue.gif

4. Screen Size : does not really matter - as long can fit in my bag pack ... I am a male so not too small I guess. And must be clear and easy for the eyes (1 of the reasons I never liked laptops in the past is bcoz it's very strenuous for the eyes)

Pls provide suggestions plz.. biggrin.gif
as all this while I never liked to use laptops ... hopefully with some inputs frm sifus here and window shopping with 1 of my tech friend 2moro , hopefully can get 1 that will change my perspectives of laptops. Lol.

Thanks in advance !

Try the new Inspiron 15 7000 series from Dell with the GTX1050 Ti. They have extended warranties you can buy, so it'll be safer than the other options.

Geforce 940mx and AMD m430, which one is better?
I know 940mx is better on gaming, but how about movie?
*
Geforce 940MX better by a mile.
Geforce 940MX = Radeon R7 M370/M380
Radeon M430 = Geforce 910

Hi guys..
Would like to ask here..
Finally i decided to go for Lenovo Legion Y520 notebook..
And, i saw seller printed gpu spec stated its gtx 1050 ddr5 4gb..and i ask the seller is the Ti version or not... Seller told if ddr5 4gb gpu it is the Ti version.. Just they didnt print it with Ti.
Is this true?
Btw.. Its Y520 15ikbn model rm4219.. Where i know it should not the Ti version.
Thanks
*
There are GTX 1050 4GB Nvidia Geforce Notebook GPU. So do make sure it's the Ti version if that's what you're looking for.

thats means.. that lenovo y520 (gtx1050 ddr5 4gb) he recommended was not Ti version? as fa i googled... y520 wit price rm4219 should be non Ti version..

Update: The seller have made a mistake and just confirmed its non Ti version..  wink.gif
*
Glad you manage to get the answer. Do note that even the non-Ti version of GTX 1050 still outperforms the GTX 960M. But there are GTX 1050 Ti notebooks that are sold around that price, so do browse a little bit more if you prefer the higher spec GPU.

QUOTE(aryas @ Apr 21 2017, 03:39 PM)
thanks btw..

how much difference between gtx1050 and gtx965m (im currently using msi ge62)?
i did found out acer vx15 have lower price for 1050ti but not really like the design, and commando's or illegear hv good price too, but i try to prioritize stock from local store 1st rather order and courier one (im from sarawak)..
dell 7567 really catches my eyes with its design..but the screen.. really that bad?
*
If you're currently using GTX 965M for GPU, then I would recommend upgrading to GTX 1060 3GB and above since GTX 1050 will perform around the same as that GPU and GTX 1050 Ti not significantly faster than it too.

I can't help you regarding the display for notebooks though, sorry. What I can say is, my G51JX is using TN panel, and movies on it isn't great due to limited viewing angle. But that is TN panel from 2010, maybe they've much improved this year. smile.gif

*
Haha, then no need to upgrade la. You just upgrade your current laptop to a better/larger SSD only. smile.gif

1. Preferred brand : Any
2. Budget : RM2000 max
3. Usage : digital painting/coding, with occasional light gaming(don't think this really matters)
4. Screen Size : Preferably 13" or above Must have good screen (IPS?)
5. video card : Anything will do
6. dvd\cd tray: Nice to have but not necessary
7. RAM : 8GB

Will go to uni for comp. sci course this year, would like to know what good options are available out there. I was planning to get a 2nd hand Thinkpad but it's quite hard to find one with good screen.

Alternatively, should I get a MiniATX case for my PC instead? If that's the case I will upgrade the CPU and monitor too but I'm afraid it's too much of a hassle to bring a PC to uni. I do have a slow laptop (Pentium Sandy Bridge) which might be ok for coding but struggles to run digital painting software.

Should be fine with notebooks using i3 / i5 U-series CPU.

I am considering either one of these 2 laptops.

Lenovo Legion Y520-50MJ
RM2,980
i5-7300HQ
4GB DDR4
1TB
NV GTX1050 2GB
15.6"FHD
W10
2 YRS ONSITE + 1 YR ACC DMG
45 WATT BATTERY
2.4 KG

Or

Dell Inspiron 7566-30414G-W10
RM3,030
i5-6300HQ
4GB DDR4
1TB
NV GTX960 4GB
15.6"FHD
W10
2 YRS PREMIUM
74 WATT BATTERY
2.62 KG

Im stuck in deciding between these 2.
The downside of the Lenovo is the small battery.. which is almost half the battery life of the Dell.
Im currently leaning towards the Dell because of it's longer battery life.
But, I've also heard some feedbacks from others that it is much better to get the GTX 10-series compared to the 9-Series..

Is the GTX 1050 and the 7th gen processor that much of a jump in terms of performance for my usage?
My Usage : Mainly Programming and Coding (CS Student), MS Office, Browsing and Gaming (Overwatch, Dota2, CSGO)

I need help from help from all the experts here to make the best possible purchase. Appreciate all your feedbacks and opinions. smile.gif

Geforce GTX 1050 should be around 40% - 50% better than the Geforce GTX 960M.

Then maybe this is a better buy.

ASUS LAPTOP GL552V-X(KBL)DM409T I7-7700HQ 4GD4 1TB NV950M WIN10H

3368rm
600 more but comes with Windows and better GPU and processor.  Weight Wise heavy though.  Wanna upgrade also easy to open.
*
Hurm, if you're looking to buy laptop with 960M/950M or even the lower tier 940MX/930MX, I would suggest you wait a little bit first. Because Nvidia recently launched the new GT 1030 GPU for desktop, which means it won't be too long before it reaches laptop, probably are already on the way. For performance, the GT 1030 performs almost similar (slightly slower) when compared to GTX 750 and is faster than the new RX 550. The price of laptop bearing this GPU could possibly be ranging around RM1900 - RM2800 which isn't that bad for what it offers.

Hi, want to get laptop lower than 3.8k(hope can get).

only spec that must have are :
i7-7700hq
GT series (930mx?) / GTX 1050 (ti?)
4gb ram
1tb hdd
(optional)if can personally like 14". but checked, no this spec in 14 inch.
*
Yes, you usually won't get i7-7700HQ CPU paired with Geforce 930MX, but can get if paired with GTX 1050 / 1050 Ti. It's very rare to find a 14" laptop, with HQ series CPU. They are usually paired with U series CPU, such as i7-7500U.

quote from Laptopmedia
Intel Core i7-8550U for CPU intensive work?

What if you need a machine for CPU intensive tasks like working with Adobe Photoshop? Core i7-8550U can be a perfect assistant, just make sure you have enough RAM and preferably fast SSD storage.

Our test shows that Core i7-8550U’s performance in Adobe Photoshop is much closer to the most powerful mainstream i7 CPU – 7700HQ than to its predecessor i7-7500U.
*
Yeah, would like to see how better performing the 4C/8T(or 4C/4T) U series CPU would be. This would be interesting as Ryzen for Laptop would also probably arrive at the end of this year. biggrin.gif

Yeah, probably greater power consumption at 100% usage. Don't know about the clockspeed too, since last time, more cores will need to be clocked lower to lower power consumption/heat management. Ryzen for laptop sure is taking it's sweet time though, if too late, could possibly be dead upon arrival.

May I know, is the laptops using Nvidia Geforce MX150 is commonly available yet in Malaysia? So far, the budget laptops suggested usually featured the older Nvidia Geforce 940M/940MX only. Thanks
