Penang Am bank informed the promo rate 4.2% for 12 months and others extend to 16 Oct. Min 10k. I think Am wants to retain those FD placed two years ago and mature in Oct. Renew and top up can get the promo rate.

Above 50 years old can have the privilege of monthly interest credited. Below 50 years old half yearly.

If you place 20k at PBB Super2 FD for 12 months, the effective interest is stated in the PBB brochure as 4.08% which is roughly RM 816.

The quoted effective rate is the result of adding all the different monthly rates and dividing by the number of months involved. In this case, 48.96 / 12 = 4.08.

However, there is a reason for those who wish to crack their heads about the actual interest or feel that step FD is deceptive. The problem is that the above quoted effective rate formula is a simplification as what you will really get is based on the number of days of each month and rate involved. Hence you won't get RM816.

Simply running the figures in a general FD Step Calculator for say placing between 1-28 October 2017, you may get around RM 815.56. The actual figure depends on each bank's peculiar ways of programming rounding adjustments.

You should also know that the figure is different for different placement months, and also for placements from 28-31 of each month.

Besides the question of when to place to get the best result, the other major reason for the calculation is for those who wish to know in advance what is their budget/cash flow for their expenses or investment planning for each month in detail.

Received a call today from hong Leong bank saying they are offering 4.88% p.a for 6 months for their branch opening at Damansara City on 3/11/2017 (Friday). Accordingly, the offer is valid at that branch only.

Asked if it is a pure FD, answer is yes though it sounds good to be true. Minimum 10k must be fresh fund. Interest paid upon maturity, not monthly. Called up the same number (03-2777 1778) to confirm the rate again but the CS (different person from that who called me, didn't take her name down) was unsure. Anyway, for folks who are interested, perhaps you may try to call prior to visit / drop by on that day.

Managed to get 4.2% for 12 months from MBB @ Solaris too upon special approval. Find it troublesome to go AmBank since I do not have any CASA with them.

DC Branch update: since they extended banking hour till 7pm, my friend use back the number that we ge during lunch time n go back to the branch to place FD, less than 10min settle..

so that they are always 1 mth ahead of their competitors at maturity.
