I own an X-Fi. I think it's highly overrated. Not satisfied for it's price, but I'll live with it. For one, it's connectivity sucks chicken shit. xtrememusic.

It doesn't have any Digital I/O without buying all the extra stuff (money i'm not going to part with) Probably will just DIY an RCA connector to join to the spdif pin outs. Flexijack? I'd rather call it bullcrap. They save the price of the extra connectors by combining it all into a 3.5mm jack.
*
DIY RCA connector? lol laugh.gif .....just buy the 3.5mm stereo to stereo RCA, and connect the white/left channel to coaxial input of your receiver is done adi....

you can't use it at the same time...the SPDIF and microphone share the same pinout...

but i admitted that Creative save cost for the extra connector, quite bad... nod.gif

You dont have to format just because 1 pci card isnt working.. Try testing the card on another computer, if it still doesn't work, the card is faulty.
*
read carefully what he said, the dealer retested and the card work.... wink.gif

For sound quality, no...

You should go buy the new one, why bother to buy the used unit? The new one from shop need RM380+-, and the new one from garage sales only RM150...damn cheap, don't expect someone sell used unit lower than this price... doh.gif

the asus xonor sounds expensive....it also takes up a pci-e slot and needs extra power so thats a big no no for me (since idon't have any other slots).

hmm, not really too sold on this alchemy thing yet, what happens if creative doesn't update its drivers? do i have to keep on patching things or do i install alchemy once only and all future software are compatible? does it take up memory?

i don't really trust creative, thats all i'm trying to say. It seems like creative is the leader of sound cards right now, and theres little choice.
*
power consumption is not your concern, don't worry...

anyway, if you said Creative gaming suck in Vista, then i don't think got others solution better than it...

looking through the EAX list, i haven't seen any recent games with support for it. does it really make much of a difference?

Added on October 29, 2008, 12:54 amhow about the Auzentech XFI Prelude?
*
for the game which support EAX, yes, huge difference....

Auzentech XFI Prelude used the Creative driver as well, so it needs alchemy in Vista gaming as well....but for SQ, Auzentech XFI Prelude will beat Creative X-FI since the former used a better opamps and DAC...

hmm, here is a comparison of the asus xonar d2 with xi-fi:

http://www.vr-zone.com/articles/a-first-lo...ard/5082-5.html

the thing is, i don't see any new games with support for EAX, so is it becoming more irrelevant?

Added on October 29, 2008, 1:10 amTest result comparison: http://www.vr-zone.com/articles/asus-xonar...sults/5135.html
*
irrelevant? are you going to say the EAX standard will die out soon? doh.gif

they do not support EAX based on two reasons.
1. Most of the gamer still using onboard sound.
2. The game developer not capable to produce the EAX sound game...

Why you need to bother the card is EAX capable or not? even Asus marketing their sound card with EAX...The Creative EAX lead from others from EAX4.0 and EAX5.0, and the game just simply can't catch up with this standard...just think as ATI GC DirectX10.1 support, who care the 10.1 standard got any title support or not, at least the standard is ahead now...

hm, so will more game developers use EAX? I'm not really bothered if the card is EAX compatible or not, I just want software-driver support that works with Vista -- from my past experience, creative has been horrible with their drivers -- if you remember that incident where they tried to sue that guy who made drivers for the card because creative were too slow in developing them!

I just don't trust them anymore and would rather go with another name company. However, this is an x-fi thread, so I would like to know if you guys are happy with your choice, and if you could buy another card, would you, and what would it be?

Added on October 29, 2008, 1:41 am

but surely you bought your soundcard to add to that experience!
*
Yap, i heard a lot of problem regarding to the game before....but i have to say i didn't encounter a single problem in my game....i play BattleField 2 2142 which support X-Fi EAX in Ultra setting, no problenm at all....i play Colin Mcrae Rally: DiRT, no siingle problem at all....and they said encounter problem in Race Driver:GriD when hardware acceleration enable, i play and no problem at all....

from the hardware compatible issue, i used the problematic Nforce4 Chipset mobo before, no problem at all, now just put on my P965 chipset mobo, still can't find any problem yet....

i'm very satisfied with the performance so far....Maybe i'm too lucky, who knows...

Anyway, for me sound is important in gaming... smile.gif

the auzen xfi got good reviews but its way out of my budget: http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews.php?/au..._1_sound_card/7

its ~200 USD card.

Added on October 29, 2008, 1:59 am

which x-fi card do you have?
*
XtremeMusic....

Thats why if you can find a lot of cheap Creative X-Fi in GarageSales and can give a reasonable sound quality and performance, and you satisfied with it, why need to bother the Auzen X-FI....they are a lot of good thing in this world, the only problem is whether we afford those stuffs or not, rite? smile.gif

Forget to mention, all my gaming are in XP, not Vista...my rig don't have enough juice to run game in Vista.... laugh.gif maybe it will give problem in Vista, who cares...

Well, if you like, you can go to find all sort of problem faced by others before you buy anything....but the outcome is you won't buy anything successful...

Anyway, what i get it from the official Creative forum is the main problem is caused by Nvidia Mobo chipset, believe it or not, up to you...

why i need to defensive? i'm not Craetive's spoken men, my Creative forum account being banned at that DanielK scandal as well...you want or not Creative sound card not my business, just because you ask then i answer...

Just shared my experience to help sound card newbie make his decision, as i said maybe i'm too lucky, no problem so far, and i used Nvidia GC as well... wink.gif
