I wanted to upgrade my bike from rojak group set to Deore XT. But was told that I need to change to Disc Brake.

Is it true? Currently dunno what is the spec but RD is Altus and FD is Tourney.

Groupset and brakes are separate items. You can even run XTR stuffs (that's if your frame supports it) while using an SRAM Avid Vbrakes. Heck, weight weeenies does that all the time. Vbrakes with highend components. Ultimate lightness.

Hi all,

I am planning to take up cycling but I have slipped disc. So I cannot bend too much for a long period of time, hence i believe a road bike is a big no no for me.

I am planning to get a beginner level mountain bike and see if I really enjoyed it, maybe i will consider to modify to a hybrid bike (road tyres).

Any recommendation of a super basic entry level mountain bike? I am 6 foot tall... what should be the right size for me?

Thanks!!!

You can put the seat lower and at more relax position rather then bending forward.

6 feet tall a 54cm - 56cm frame would be good but most important is you go and test yourself.

Mountain bike to fit a raod tyre? Sure got enough clearance or not? Why don't you get a hybrid bike all the way. Hybrid usually come with road size tyre and MTB features like zoom fork, disc brake and higher seating position. Just my 2 cents.

Cyclocross is just using your existng road bike frame and add a thicker wheel, or a mountain bike wheel.

Search more in Google what is Cyclocross ...you will get the idea. tongue.gif

Thanks for the feedback.

I asked 3 shops, those guys said I need to change to disc brake because it goes with the hub. So, change disc brake means need to change hub and cassette. Ultimately, 3/3 recommend me change groupset. Cheaper.

I'll wait for the new Deore XT groupset. Wonder when is it out.

Well, you can either get a used wheelset with Vbrakes rim or just change the hub to a 9spd friendly ones. Got holes does not means u must use it mah...

Cannot wor..

The shop say the hub comes with the disc brake. I got 3 options:-

1. install a normal disc brakes (RM600-700) and then install the Deore XT cassette and RD. rclxub.gif

2. Buy whole groupset and install one shot.. hmm.gif

3. Sell the current bike and get a new one (which I don't think wanna waste that money) shakehead.gif

OK. Brought my bike to show the shop, Joo Ngean. Ok, to get Deore XT, do the followings:-

1. Change a compatible hub and disc brakes.

2. Change rims.

3. Only can fit Deore XT groupset.

Total cost: RM2,700 (Even more expensive than my bike) shocking.gif
