to anyone trying to get refund from shopee for hard drive warranty dispute, be warned.

here is the case example

you buy hard drive, turns out seagate cant rma. so it falls under store warranty. but the seller doesnt honor warranty (more accurate they pretend they are, saying they will claim on ur behalf. they quote take 2 month. but u wait 3-4month no replacement. why? because they lied and made u wait that long. they are trying to waste ur time hoping u give up at this point to get ur refund).

This is what shopee says about refunds

QUOTE
"Yes, if the item is still within the Shopee Guarantee period or a specific "Shop Warranty" period, you can raise a return/refund request, especially if the seller fails to honor the warranty.

Here is the general process and conditions:

If the order is within the Shopee Guarantee Period (usually 15 days from delivery date)
You can raise a return/refund request directly through the Shopee app.

Go to the "Me" tab and select "To Receive" under "My Purchases".

Select the relevant order and tap "Return/Refund".

Choose the appropriate reason, such as "The Item received is faulty (e.g. malfunction, does not work as intended)".
Provide evidence (photos and/or videos) of the faulty hard drive and a description of the issue.

Submit the request. Shopee will review the case and may require you to return the item for a full refund.

If the order is after the Shopee Guarantee Period

The return/refund process depends on the type of warranty:

Shop Warranty: If the seller provided a specific "Shop Warranty" that extends beyond the Shopee Guarantee period, you must contact the seller directly via Shopee Chat to claim the warranty.

Manufacturer/Supplier Warranty: The warranty usually rests with the manufacturer. You would typically need to contact the authorized service center as specified in the warranty card or product packaging.

What to do if the seller does not respond or replace the item under warranty (for both scenarios):
Document everything: Keep screenshots of all conversations with the seller regarding the warranty claim.

Contact Shopee Customer Service: If the seller, supplier, or manufacturer does not respond to your warranty claim or fails to provide a resolution, you can contact Shopee Customer Service for further assistance.

Shopee Intervention: Shopee agents will review the case based on the evidence provided by both parties. If the seller does not respond within a specified time frame (e.g., 48 hours for certain cases), Shopee may proceed with a refund to the buyer.

In essence, if the seller is not honoring the terms of a shop warranty, you have recourse through Shopee's customer service, who can investigate and potentially issue a refund."

shopee rejected claims on basis of it's outside the 15 day guarantee.

But notice how there is a claims outside that period which falls under the manufacturer (e.g. seagate rma) or store warranty.

Which the case falls under but shopee pretends not to know this, unless you point out this specific line in their own guidelines.

I managed to claim refund before just citing this and providing proof. So if your refund gets rejected and you do have solid proof, keep reopen ticket to dispute. because unless you go through a few rounds of this back and forth close, reopen, close, reopen, you wont get your refund through shopee.

you have to

1. prove that the seagate rma is not valid (show screenshots)
2. prove that seller does not honor store warranty (show screenshots)
3. provide proof your hard disk is dead (just show screenshots of your smart test etc)
4. dont let shopee trick you about the limited 15 day guarantee (theyll give u any excuse if it lets them not refund you if u allow them). refer them to the guideline for outside that period in regards to the store warranty not being honored. this will be ur basis for refund as per their own guideline.

my point is, prevention is better than the cure. so if you dont want to go through hell, just order from the legit sources.

those amazon prices r nice cheap and legit, but since they wont arrive in good condition and dont qualify for rma locally in malaysia, u can stop dreaming about buying hard drives at those prices unfortunately. just accept u have to cough up the high mark up prices from the local stock official distributor/resellers in malaysia >_<:

unfortunately. i can definitely see new gen homelabbers who getting into this buy a " NAS drive", buy the wd red (NON PLUS), thinking oo yeah it's a nas drive for 24/7 continuous usage. unbeknownst they got the SMR and use it non the wiser till something happens sweat.gif

hm... on their website i dont see the NON plus drives. they no longer produce them? that solves the problem at least.

But people need to be wary buying the old stock which are the wd red NON plus models laugh.gif

https://www.westerndigital.com/products/hdd/internal-hdd

Actually for western digital, it wasnt just the SMR issue that landed them in hot water, it was their other trick.

"power on hours warnings after just 3 years of nas use"

so basically what that was, WD would do a warning if your power on for the hard drive was 3 years then they will falsely tell u the drive needs to be replaced.

But that goes COUNTER to smart info. Smart tells you when the drive is actually gone bad. Whereas what WD did was put a firm power on hours limit even if drive still works fine, in order to get you to buy a new drive to replace it when actually u didnt even need to.

Very scummy behavior by WD puke.gif

https://www.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/...rkd_as_warning/

QUOTE
SpaceRex says "if you have WDDA enabled..." so it sounds like there may be an option in storage manager to disable it.

https://www.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/...still_an_issue/

dont think wdda 3 years power on hours is an issue in 2025 cause the nas brands mostly didnt support it (they removed support is the newer firmwares). i dont think truenas even uses that metric either. nobody liked it except western digital laugh.gif

For seagate though they too were in that smr debacle, they didnt dare do that for their NAS line of hard drives, but not WD. And seagate didn't pull that WDDA 3 year power on hours stunt either.

when your choice for hdd is seagate, western digital or toshiba..... u know the situation is bad sweat.gif

QUOTE
Yes, the hard drive (HDD) market is widely considered an oligopoly. The industry is dominated by a very small number of large firms, primarily Seagate Technology, Western Digital, and Toshiba.

Key Characteristics of the HDD Oligopoly:

Few Dominant Players: The market has undergone significant consolidation over the past two decades, decreasing from a dozen global players to only three primary manufacturers. Seagate and Western Digital, in particular, command the vast majority of the market share (around 85% combined), with Toshiba as a distant third.
High Market Concentration: This high level of concentration gives the remaining companies significant control over supply and pricing within the industry.

Interdependence: Each firm's actions heavily influence its competitors' decisions. Analysts have noted the "HDD oligopolists acting in a typical oligopoly manner" by managing supply to maintain pricing stability and profitability, rather than competing aggressively on unit volume.

High Barriers to Entry: The substantial capital investment, complex technology, and established supply chains required to manufacture hard drives create significant barriers for new companies to enter the market.

Focus on High-Capacity & Enterprise Market: While solid-state drives (SSDs) have largely replaced HDDs in personal computers and laptops, the HDD market has found a stronghold in the data center and enterprise "nearline" storage markets, where cost-effectiveness per terabyte is crucial. This specialized focus reinforces the position of the few dominant players in that specific niche

QUOTE
Paying RM 1,650 for the Seagate ST12000VN0008 12TB hard drive in Malaysia in late 2025 is not a good value, as this is an older model and current market prices are significantly lower. For a similar or lower price, you could likely purchase a newer, higher-performance drive, such as the IronWolf Pro.

Key considerations for buying in Malaysia in 2025

Outdated model: The ST12000VN0008 was released several years ago and has since been superseded by newer IronWolf models, including the IronWolf Pro series. Newer models often have improved technology, higher performance, and better durability ratings.

Lower market price: As of late 2025, various listings in Malaysia show the price for the ST12000VN0008, or even the newer Pro series, to be notably less than RM 1,650. For example, a recent listing on eBay showed a new ST12000VN0008 for around RM 925, and other listings show IronWolf Pro models for RM 1,258 on Shopee.

Better alternatives: For demanding NAS applications, the newer IronWolf Pro line offers a higher workload rating (up to 550 TB/year compared to the standard IronWolf's 180 TB/year), making it a better value for professionals and enterprise users.
Currency comparison: RM 1,650 is equivalent to approximately $393 USD, which is high given the international market price for this particular drive

but the thing is AI doesn't mention about warranty for those cheap drives. Yes u can get cheaper from US (but out of region so cannot claim warranty. and they arrive in bad condition due to the shipping), but malaysia local? all jacked up even for legit sources sweat.gif what to do?

Even outside of Shopee's guarantee period, you can still pursue a refund for a falsely advertised hard drive based on Malaysian consumer law
. The law supersedes Shopee's internal policies, though it will require you to take action against the seller outside of the platform.

Malaysia's consumer protection laws

The Consumer Protection Act 1999 (CPA) gives you rights as a consumer that cannot be waived by a company's internal policies, including Shopee's guarantee period.
Key provisions that apply to false advertising:

False or misleading representations (Section 10): Sellers cannot make false or misleading claims about their products, including their quality, quantity, and characteristics. A hard drive advertised as new but sold as used, or claiming a higher capacity than its actual size, falls under this category.

Guarantees in respect of goods (Part V): The CPA provides a set of implied guarantees for goods supplied to a consumer, including acceptable quality and that the goods match their description. A product that does not meet the seller's description is in breach of these guarantees.

How to pursue a refund outside Shopee's guarantee period

Since you can no longer use Shopee's built-in resolution process, you must use official channels to enforce your consumer rights.

1. File a complaint with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDN)
You can report the seller's fraudulent activity to the KPDN, which can investigate and take action against dishonest businesses. You can file a complaint online through their e-Aduan portal.
2. File a claim with the Tribunal for Consumer Claims Malaysia (TCCM)
The TCCM is an independent body established under the CPA to provide a fast, inexpensive, and easy way for consumers to resolve disputes.

Jurisdiction: The TCCM can hear claims for false and misleading representations, as long as the claim is filed within three years of the incident. The monetary limit for a claim is RM50,000.

Process: You can file a claim online through the Tribunal's website. A nominal fee of RM5 is required. You will need to provide all your evidence, including screenshots of the product listing and proof of the hard drive's false specifications.

Outcome: The Tribunal will issue an "Award," which is a legally binding order against the seller. Failure to comply with an Award is a criminal offense.

What this means for you

While Shopee may refuse to assist with a refund after its guarantee period expires, this does not mean your right to a refund is gone. Your claim against the seller is protected by Malaysian law, and you can enforce it through the TCCM.

Important steps to take:

Gather all evidence of the false advertising and the hard drive's actual condition.

Use the TCCM to file an official claim against the seller.

Use all communication records with the seller on Shopee as evidence, even if they are no longer helpful in pursuing a platform-level refund.

If you are responding to shoee you can ask AI to draft you the response, it would be something like this

QUOTE
Dear Sir/Madam,

I, [Your Full Name], the buyer for Order ID [Insert Your Order ID], wish to register a formal complaint regarding the product purchased on [Date of Purchase]: a Seagate 12TB Hard Disk Drive.

The standard "Shopee Guarantee" period has expired. However, the seller, [Insert Seller's Shopee Name], made a material and fraudulent misrepresentation. This situation warrants immediate investigation and intervention by Shopee Malaysia. The seller's actions violate platform policies and Malaysian consumer law.

The key issues are:

False "Brand New" Claim: The item was advertised and sold as "brand new." However, after inspection and serial number verification with Seagate, the drive shows signs of previous use or is not official stock. This makes the "brand new" claim false.

Invalid Seagate RMA Warranty: The seller falsely claimed an official Seagate RMA manufacturer warranty in Malaysia covered the drive. Verification with Seagate confirms the warranty is invalid, non-existent, or from an unauthorized source.

Seller's Refusal to Rectify: When contacted about the faulty status and invalid warranty, the seller initially agreed to a replacement under "store warranty" but later refused to honor the agreement, became unresponsive, or made additional false claims.

All evidence is attached, including the original product listing, chat transcripts with the seller, and official communication from Seagate verifying the warranty status.
Shopee Malaysia is requested to investigate this fraudulent transaction. The seller's actions violate platform integrity and consumer rights. Shopee must ensure sellers adhere to honest trade practices.

The following resolutions are sought:

Immediate action by Shopee to obtain a full refund from the seller.

Investigation and appropriate penalties for the seller's fraudulent behaviour.

All evidence has also been compiled for submission to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) and the Tribunal for Consumer Claims (TCCM). A formal response and resolution plan from Shopee Malaysia is expected within three (3) business days.

Sincerely,
[Your Full Name]
[Your Contact Phone Number]
[Your Email Address]

Obviously you will need all the screenshots and proof for this. Without it, it will be hard to argue for your case. You are your own champion in this matter, nobody else unfortunately, not even shopee who will be quick to try reject your refund as hard as they can sweat.gif

just to mention again on shopee rejections claiming exceed their 15 day guarantee refund. This is the actual law that SUPERCEDES their internal 15 day only refund nonsense rolleyes.gif

Sure you are within your rights to dispute and take action with the steps mentioned. but it's a big hassle, so unless it's a big order, most won't bother.

What it boils down to, shopee is just gouging to see how serious you are whether you will take matters further based on the actions consumers are within their rights to pursue. So it's a game of chicken basically laugh.gif

few time they gave up and refunded me in the past (since i had the proof and they didn't want to test me), but honestly, just buy from the official sources and just rma seagate. then u wont have to deal with this trouble sweat.gif

for seagate rma, i just give them my smart info screenshot (i also included printed copy in the package) and this was enough to get a replacement (obviously only rma hdd with actual problems). The only thing they care mostly is that you bought from authorized source and within region. If that's ok, chances are your rma will go through without issue. I did this a couple times no issues.

The only time i ever had a problem because of the seller i bought from sad.gif

for normal nas user homelab, pro or non pro nas hard drive is fine. get whichever is cheapest and doesn't have any glaring failure rate frequency in the news.

for truenas if u want to test new hard drive, open the shell do this

tmux

then

CODE
badblocks -c 2048 -b 4096 -wvs /dev/sda

sda replace for your drive. find out in the disks in truenas ui. this changes on reboot so careful.

open a new shell, then tmux again, repeat.

if you want to check the tmux active sessions, go to shell type

CODE
tmux -attach -t 0

change 0 for 1, 2, 3 and so on. the list of active tmux is shown if u do tmux, there is a list of tmux numbers for active sessions.

so if u receive say 4 hard drives, run the check for all of them same time.

the command will fully test all blocks to see if they work or got issue. if your drive break after using this, just rma. i did this for one drive, it died after 1 month rolleyes.gif the seller had reset the smart, so i only could know the disk was on cusp of death only after running this badblock test.

Basically buying grey from shopee is just like buying from Amazon. Basically its the same shit, just with local smell. Basically if you really care about warranty (like all things not just HDD), go buy from official resellers or SI (ie Illegear, Idealtech).

Laz also the same, I got scammed twice by super cheap deals that the sellers dont ship out and trigger autocancel.

Legits shopee shops also have different kinda scam, if theres a super cheap deal scored, they can & have canceled with 'no stock' excuses.

Both Shopee & Laz are scummy sites that sides with sellers not buyers, bcoz our pathetic consumer protection laws and you prolly spend more time than the value of getting your money back (depends).

example of what a bad hard drive looks like

user posted image

it wasn't this bad initially. But as soon as i got the initial warning, and zfs raid z1 was in degraded mode, i did my backup.

once done, i did the smart test long and a zero fill format (because want to send back for refund. normally u would sent for rma replacement, but....)

after that did the more stressful test/check

which is the badblock test i mentioned previously.

When doing that test, the hard drive smart got worse (don't do this if you hadn't yet backup first). So yeah, conclusive proof the drive is not just a bit bad, it's very bad. Not usable at all.

Hard drives can be in a few different states

1. it's fine. this is the ideal state u want your hard drive to be in. it just works no issue.

2. it's showing initial signs it's going bad like current pending sectors. It becomes a bigger concern if those values keep on increasing and frequently, which is a very bad sign. But even if it doesn't, i would still want to replace the hard drive. Smart just tells you when a hard drive might be dying, so don't wait for the drive to die before you want to backup and stuff. My drive was basically in this state.

3. the drive is very bad. the error values just keep getting worse and frequently. This was my drive after doing the stress test.

Sometimes people say oo it's a bad sata connection. but actually for my case that wasn't it. How i know?

do this command

CODE
smartctl -l farm /dev/sdc

then look for the interface crc errors. If it's 0, it's not a bad sata cable or loose cable causing the errors.

QUOTE
A CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) interface error metric on a Seagate hard drive, logged in a diagnostic system like FARM (Factory Analysis and Reporting Matrix), indicates a data transfer problem between the hard drive and the computer. An increasing count of these errors points to a physical hardware problem rather than an issue with the drive's storage surface.

So just a troubleshoot tip for people wondering how to check if your hard drive sata cable is faulty or not.

People often focus too much on the hard drives themselves, that they neglect to pay attention to the sata cables as well. Check both sweat.gif

Another tip, when installing the sata cables, make sure they route to the proper drive bay. If not, then how you know which bay has which hdd ? If you messed up like i did, what i do is, i go to scrutiny find out the serial for the problematic hard drive.

I pull out the hard drive (these are not part of a pool, and nas supports live hard drives so pulling them is fine. Only if it's part of an active pool, make sure you shutdown your NAS first to power off).

Then i check the label to see the serial. That's how you know you pulled out the correct hard drive based on the serial on label.

All that based on SMART info which can be read by CDInfo tho that program isnt as intuitive as above to tell whether which part of the HDD is failing (it just give an overall health assessment traffic light rating).

Then again SMART data can also be tampered with so how reliable its reporting can be doubted.

i'm running the bad block scan test, it really stresses out the drive. and i'm watching the scrutiny show smart failed.

it will read/write each and every block on the hard drive. for this it typically takes up to roughly 10 days for a 12tb to do that. It's very thorough and if anything is off, just observe the values like current pending sectors, and all the critical values to see if the disk is dying or not.

the regular smart without scrutiny, is less intuitive. scrutiny ui for me is much easier to read. But u have to be careful and check by serial number. In truenas those drive letters can easily be mislabeled i found from using truenas.

e.g. SDB could actually be SDA on reboot, at times. or some history of test that never got cleared but stuck in cache.

3 out of those 4 came from the same source. and 1 of those failed.

in the farm data it shows the power on hours of 4+ years despite owning it only 1 year.

For the other things like pending sectors, etc, farm shows a clean bill of health. Except for that 1 drive that got flagged.

like you said, i can't trust the smart since we know its not new, so i zero filled and did the black block test to check if anything goes bad. so far 3 out of 4 is fine. only the 1 is confirmed dead/dying.

scrutiny also had a feature where it can flag if a drive health is not good and impending going bad. But it's not 100% as even the dev admitted. I just observe the important values and see if they get higher increments and how frequent. so thats how i'm checking for myself hmm.gif

Seagate also has their own tool for testing. You have to pull out and connect to your pc and run the test.

Does anyone know if

"yes it distribution" is a legitimate seagate reseller? They say they get their stock from Seagate Malaysia local distributors.

Some sellers will specifically point out the seagate distributor, this one was a bit vague.

Not familiar with the shop, are they legit on shopee?

i wanted to order thundermatch because pricing should be similar to yes it for this, but they are out of stock. they refuse to say when they will restock sweat.gif

tmt quoted price rm1599

ALLIT they say dont have. not even listed. max listed was 10tb rolleyes.gif

looked on shopeemall, the seagate 12tb @ rm 1.3k

but it says pre-order and overseas. So doesn't mean not local stock? But it's on shopeemall sweat.gif "cool pc laptop supplies". No i dont recommend this store or anything like it. just surprised it was on shopeemall.

viewnet got but markup to rm2k for the 12tb, fuk that puke.gif Their shopee price ridiculous. but on their website price listing it's about rm 1.6k
https://www.viewnet.com.my/price-list#reloaded

from this list i only know tmt and allit is legit. problem is they are out of stock.... sweat.gif

czone has a wd red plus listed for rm 1.5k but they dont have a shopee presence. may have to go there in person to buy rolleyes.gif

Sea Tool?

Does anyone know if

"yes it distribution" is a legitimate seagate reseller? They say they get their stock from Seagate Malaysia local distributors.

Seems legit, read buyers reviews to really gauge. As for Seagate seller, maybe can ask Seagate chat agent to find out if their legit? But its also possible the shopee shop might not be the real genuine by the physical shop (it happens!) so do your due diligence.

if they dispute, they will sometimes ask u to use their own tool to check the drive health. hasnt happened to me yet, but that is what some say.

i just use the truenas smart info and also scrutiny and just screenshot and print it out. and that was enough for my previous seagate rma to pass without issue.

not sure if needed, but print out the screenshots and add to the hard drive package. why not?

what do u mean by that. u mean got shops that pretend to be legitimate shops on the regular shopee (not shopee mall) ? is that a thing hmm.gif

if like this i can click shopeemall and use that. i check pricing its the same as shopee, so may as well use that just to be safe.

well see the 11.11 sales which has a good deal. i'm only buying 1 hard drive first. I'll check the serial number and then ask the seagate live agent to confirm status see if it checks out.

Yup its more common than you think. Off the top I had saw a scammer postings very similar description as Dotatech (you know they like to put # in front, yeah something like that).

Being in ShoppeeMall doesnt guarantee real, yes it says its guaranteed genuine seller but who knows?

Forget Low Yat. Go to Brem Mall in Kepong. Just IT Technology is there, they are a huge warehouse/distributor and have the best prices in Malaysia. Literally.

I got my RTX 4080 for RM4.8k, about RM100-300 cheaper than elsewhere.
got sell hard drives? anyone check before?

That said, suppliers are not expected to lower prices much, and a round of price talks is likely, with enterprise SSD contract prices predicted to rise 5–10% in Q4 2025.

To make matters worse, a price hike for HDDs is on the way. Western Digital has announced that prices on all HDD products will rise gradually, effective immediately.

The company cites “unprecedented demand” across its portfolio as the key reason for these increases and emphasizes that investment in advanced innovation is a primary factor.

Rising costs affect not only large enterprise deployments but also smaller organizations seeking the best HDD for storage-intensive applications.

All these factors indicate that the AI-driven storage shortage will keep affecting buying strategies well into 2026.

seems most of the heat are for the 30tb hard drives. but i see even 12tb are getting low on stock. prices not that great (compared to amazon at least)

If your going there can also try out Enotex (Etex) further along in Kepong. Bought some stuff from them coz was the cheapest in shopee/Laz then.
