are the WD ultrastars worth it? not looking for RAID/NAS, just a simple storage/ solution
*
Better than other normal/NAS HDD at more premium price.
But worth it? 2 normal HDD that configured to be RAID-1 or one as storage and another as backup will be more worth it as if 1 HDD dead you still have another copy whereas if 1 HDD only, even if it's Ultrastar, if dead then all your data is gone.

yeah im considering that
not storing any critical data though, but i do love my movies
whats the consensus on shucking in malaysia? we no longer have the wd elements so im not sure if its worth it
*
If not critical data then doesn't need to be expensive HDD icon_idea.gif
I see for shucking mostly people will buy from US as it is cheaper.

wondering if anyone knows the load count for a 4TB my passport portable hdd?

trying to compare if a 3.5" would last longer than a 2.5" external hdd.
*
HDD keep being revised every few years. By the time that HDD model reach end of life, HDD being sold already replaced with other model. So difficult to say whether which would last longer.

Take care shock and vibration are more important if for portable use. Should consider using SSD instead.

Do you mind to share how your Toshiba holding up still? Is the drive still working and what the age of the drive?

First time hearing this kind of sound on HDD feel strange as my old seagate with 7200rpm does not have the noise. Will just use this WD drive to backup something less important.

Check the HDD SMART status.

Yup won't run it again just that I've forgotten the information after that test. Will update again here.

By the way, if it all zero mean drive is ok state?
*
Yup, if zero then drive should be ok.
Unreadable/unwritable sector is one of the sign that the drive have issue. But it won't be able to tell how long can the drive still be alive.

I'm using the WD Utilities to run that SMART, and it only show this

Reassigned Sector Count: 0
Power-On Hours Count: 20
Drive Power Cycle Count: 4
Temperature: 33C
SATA/PCIe CRC Error Count: 0

Where can I get the unreadable/unwritable sector?

I personally use CrystalDiskInfo

This the value obtained from CrystalDiskInfo

Reallocated Sector Count: Current 200, Worst 200, Threshold 140, Raw Values 000000000000
Current Pending Sector Count: Current 200, Worst 200, Threshold 0, Raw Values 000000000000
Uncorrectable Sector Count: Current 100, Worst 253, Threshold 0, Raw Values 000000000000

biggrin.gif  Mind to explain how my drive doing? Not sure what the value about.  notworthy.gif

Means all is still zero. No error ever recorded.

Hi Guys, anyone still use HDD? or all sudah migrate SSD?
Thinking should i still find HDD to backup?
*
$ per GB, HDD is still the cheapest. If your backup is few TB it's cheaper to use HDD, also if slower time to backup compare to SSD is not on issue for you.

As long as not SMR type. Need to check the model to avoid SMR.

Check if you're using WD SMR type drive

WD launches investigation into problems with its controversial SMR hard drives — same drives that got WD sued in 2021 now reporting failure rates due to 'fundamental' flaws
QUOTE
Hard drive manufacturer Western Digital has confirmed that it is looking into potential problems with its older hard drives identified by data recovery scientists. The drives in question, a collection of 2TB to 6TB WD Blue and Red models released around 2020, are SMR drives, a classification that already brought WD a class-action lawsuit in 2021.

As WD alludes to, multiple data recovery scientists, including 030 data recovery, have begun reporting the issues fundamental to WD's use of SMR technology in lower-capacity drives. An open secret since 2021, data scientists have known that these 2TB to 6TB WD Red and Blue SMR drives have increased chances of failure, up to permanent data loss and physical drive damage.

Now, data recovery scientists are confirming that Western Digital Blue and Red drives with the WD*0EZAZ, WD*0EDAZ, and WD*0EFAX model numbers at the 2TB, 3TB, 4TB, and 6TB sizes are prone to abnormally high failure rates. Data scientists like 030 Datenrettung, mentioned above, also previously included WD Purple drives released at the same time in their list of failing SMR drives, but WD confirmed that the Purple drives are built on a different enough firmware that the same issues would not affect these drives. Larger SMR drives are also not at risk of the same failures.

Anyone using WD hard drives at these sizes from 2020 or later should check their hardware to ensure they are not also at risk of data loss and failure; data scientists suggest that the first sign of trouble with the drives will be loud noises coming from the spinning platters, though that warning sign is a fairly universal signal of something going terribly wrong.

wd red PLUS should be ok.

If u dont get plus then i would be wary  sweat.gif
wd wanted to sell wd red smrs for nas purposes. which they really shouldnt, but since they insist and they got caught, they came out with the PLUS. As in yes these are the real deal for nas drives, we promise  rolleyes.gif

then newbs who dont know will buy the wd red (NON PLUS) and get hit by smr. then wonder why for truenas zfs is sux  laugh.gif

Even after caught they still selling SMR as Red, which is known for NAS. Many that never do their homework will fall for the trick.

Now premature failure. Double the unlucky

2. different brand. might not be a good idea to mix. it will work, but i rather not do that
*
It's advisable to mix brand especially if it's for RAID setup.
The idea is to mitigate the risk of simultaneous failures caused by a single bad manufacturing or firmware bug.

But of course need to ensure all have comparable performance such as same RPM speed, capacity and no mixing CMR with SMR drive.

QUOTE(eddie2020 @ Nov 24 2025, 02:06 AM)
Hi Guys,

I am thinking to get an HDD to backup my phone data such as photo etc. Earlier i am using SSD, and I found out my SSD wont last long as my family member are actively backing up their photo and video especially.

Reading out NAS seems a good choice, but i am not into NAS yet as it out of my budget. I am wondering what is the best reliability of backing up my data? I will keep a copy into my pc, a copy into external hard disk. Should i consider another internal hard disk? such as WD Red Plus / Pro?

Please do let me know if there is a suggestion on how should i proceed? My budget currently perhaps 500 bucks looking at 2 - 4TB  , is it sufficient?
*
The easiest method would be to use NAS.

The cheapest method would be to backup on your PC. Then also make another backup on external SSD/HDD. This way you got 3 copies of data, in case 1 or 2 devices is missing or damage you still have 1 more copy. Syncthing would be one of the popular app and it support autorun from the phone to copy the data to your PC. But this app is more on mirroring, while you can set it so that PC only receive data but can't change data on phone, if the data is deleted on your phone, it will also delete on the PC. You need to use versioning or recycle bin on the computer to recover deleted files.
There might be other app that can do pure backup solution.

Another solution is to use Immich, but this app only for photos and videos, not other files. From what I read need to use Docker to run the server.
