The thing is, I believe a lot of people are like me. I have an R9 290 . I want to upgrade coz I have upgraded to a 1440p monitor and R9 290 cant quite cut it anymore, it is just barely enough to max out Overwatch . Besides that, the Hawaii chipset lack modern HTPC features, cannot decode HEVC 10 bit and no support for VP9 making YouTube 4k60 video almost maxing out my CPU. So logical upgrade path for me inside the red camp should be RX Vega only since RX 480/580 is not consider an upgrade , but a sidegrade. Big improvement on power efficiency, but nothing significant on my FPS. So no point going for me going after those cards.
I don't give a thing about power consumption, so I can accept the RX Vega with the 2x8 pin power connectors but that kind of price/performance really puts me off . True, RX Vega is good for miners but that kind of pricing really pushes gamers off to the green camp because there is no worthwhile upgrade path for Hawaii chip users.
bro, I feel you. But what I'm telling you is you are angry at the wrong party..
If you open youtube and search for "RX vega mining" and read comments you will see a huge percentage are curses.. kinda sad/childish, but shows the resentment, those people will go around youtube in mining vids (which is of no interest to them) and curse left and right to show how frustrated they are that they can't upgrade because miners grab cards in bulk
its not AMD that raises the prices, its the retail shops and partners
Eg viewnet (just example) see high demand for Rx vega, they call asus.. asus reply we only have 2000 gpu cores from AMD, so we can only make 2000 cards.. charge 20% more coz demand much higher than supply, then viewnet will top up a little more too.. then you as customer angry why cant buy my GPU at MSRP that AMD announce..
I already explained in my prev reply why AMD can't risk making more GPU cores.
What made things worse, two days ago someone tweaked their RX Vega 64 to mine ethereum at 0.20mh per watt, this makes vega the most efficient miner even surpassing rx 480 and GTX 1070..
And there's hype of "potentially will be even more efficient with further tweaks" which made the miners more crazy about it.. even those "game packs" AMD tried to pull to deter miners don't seem to work, they are willing to pay the extra
