Ahh I see... nice. I always wanted to have a GSD as a pet. My mom doesn't like dogs, but now she had passed away so I think GSD will be a good companion for me and my dad.

My gf's dad location is at Kuala Kangsar, different breeds is available like labrador, golden retriever, rottweiler for now. Used to have beagle, shi zhu, pugs. He have another friend who is specialised in Huskies.

How do you mean by minor protection? Do you mean that you train the GSD to guard the house?
*
Hi,

Minor protection as in biting sleeve works. have you seen the bite sleeve that dog trainer use? If you trained it well, it will bite sleeve on command which can disable most attacker. and release on command. to go indepth, you can see some video on sch. Generally most gsd are good for guarding house. but do not mistaken a bad nervy dog as good guard dogs. a fear biter will bite anyone when if feel threaten. you need a confident dog with good nerve.

But I guess if anyone tries to break into my house, I would just locked up my dogs for them. In case if the dog attack and the robber hurt them. They are just to precious to be hurt. But I guess some of you might think that beats the purpose of having a guard dog. Anyway, I would like to hear what you guys thinks?

Hi,

Last few years there have many reports by pet lover about their pets getting stolen or robbed in my area. but this year, havent hear anything yet. i believe that these thugs or thiefs are just small timer that steal and keep in their house. I dont think they can sell it. Unless the petshop buys dogs from stranger. Try to keep a lookout for dogs that are sold extra cheap. hopefully we can make a different.

That being said, we need to be extra caution. For example like small breeds dog are kept indoor or out of plain sight at night. For large breed, I also dont know. Maybe buy a few more dogs and no one dare to come near. hahaha. Well, just my excuse to buy more gsd.

I guess gsd is like caviar. Only for the acquired taste only. I have many breeds before but eventually decided to stay with gsd. so i guess it is gsd for life. Golden and Lab are not the popular breed now. I noticed a lot of chi hua hua now. Maybe after the show Beverly Hills chi hua hua. ahahaha

Gsd can be kept indoor provided they are walk daily. Actually they like to lie on the couch and sleep. but my mom will kill me because of the hairs. Indoor is also much cooler for them. my dogs sleep in the kitchen in the afternoon.

Hi,

They dont eat a lot each month. Same amount as lab or golden. 1 Bag of 15kg dog biscuit a month. You can give some supplements or vits. I tend to give meats and eggs too. This breed dont need a high level of exercise. Maybe 30-60 mins of activities a day will be fine. A very nice breed that look good and perform well.

Hi GSD lovers,

I rescue this fella from a pound. A lot of ppl told me that he looks like alsatians. Does he looks like 1? And is there anything that i can do to make his other ear stands up again? it was 1up and 1down.. then the other 1 came up for 2 weeks.. then went back down for almost a month now..

He should be 3-4mths old now.

Hi

My guess will be german shepherd mix with malinois?? The ear look like gsd and the color look like malinois. Yust my guess la. As for the ear, usually teething time, the ear will tend to go down for a while. but dont worry until they reach age of 9 months. As for method of making the ear stand, try to give some bones to chew to work on the facial muscle. I been told zinc helps too. Taping the ear will be the last resort as you really need to know what you are doing as to not hurt the ear cartilage or abnormal growth later on. Go online and do some research on ear taping. In fact there is a product from U.S to tape the ear.

Heya aLaStIaR,
I'm an avid dog owner. I used to own two german shepherds when i was younger but unfortunately they passed on at the ripe age of 14 human years. Anyway, seeing that dog of yours reminded me of my dog when I was little. I can't fully say if it is in fact a german shepherd but from the face it does look like one. My dog had the problem with the ears too haha, and it really makes them cute so this is what we did. We bought a strong tape (not like a duct tape, more like a reinforced selo tape) and taped the dog's years from the inside to the outside, covering the whole ear so that it stood up. Some german shepherds have this problem when they're older (5 months old). If your dog's still young perhaps you can give it time but still taping the ear won't do any harm to him.

Good luck smile.gif
***Edit: OF course we only covered the outer skin of the ear, not the entire ear. That way the dog might not be able to hear.

Hello,

Well if you wanna keep your german shepherd indoors, well, firstly you gotta find the right dog food brand to give your dog. experiment with yoru dog different companeis each time you buy him the food and see if he sheds his fur. Or sometimes your dog may not be having an extremely sensitive skin but from my experience they tend to shed fur depending n the type of biscuits etc. Look at the meat of the biscuits, some are lamb / beef / chicken / and fish.

Hi Flyer,

Good advice. Especially on the food. Different activities require different types of food.

Hi,

1 year old is quite big already. dont think it helps anymore. during young it helps to strenthen the cartilage. feel the back of the ear, is it firm or very thin? maybe a pics will helps.

*
usually during puppy time, they will have this funny walk. which i like to call puppy walk. but then you mentioned, he fall when he walk. i think this is serious. please post in some pics so we can advise further and a short video might be better. did you see this problem when you bought this puppy? or suddenly? do you cage your dog 24/7? did you see the parents? is he screaming in pain when he walk? sorry, this is just a few questions that came to my head.

Hi Davidyet,

glad to know a fellow gsd hobbyist here. nice little fella you got. where you from?

ah chuan,

yes, showline do have sable color. not many but there is some sable. the reason the germans do not show much sable is because it is hard to get high placing with sable. the prefer color is still black/red. as for sable showline in malaysia, i think there is none. correct me if i am wrong but i have not seen any sable in showring here yet.

I am hoping to use him as stud for my female. we need to keep improving the gsd scene here. lastly, you are right. because with my gsds running around in my compound, that is a real wonderful sight. Breath taking.

hi there.. im a GSD lover too.. but currently, im stuck between getting rottie first or gsd as my first pet as a guard dog n my pet..
im a serious lover for dog! im still searching between these 2 breeds! the breederu found at penang.. he have good quality GSD? as in good bloodline? how much the puppy cost u??
damm i heard lots of pros n cons on GSD and make me  rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif

ahahah. if you ask me gsd or rott sure i tell you gsd la. i am biased. lol. depending on your location, maybe i can point you to the right direction. do some research first on the types you like. as for the pro and cons, just go to the knowledgable breeder then you will get more infos. remember to ask all questions. some breeder have many years experience in gsd but they know nothing about bloodline and etc. as for price, gsd is price slightly higher than rott. an average quality will be from 1.8k to 3k. again depending on lines, health and etc. the thing to watch out for when shopping for dog is the nerve. i believe any dogs should be confident and outgoing.

usually gsd blow their coats twice a year. some will drop more hairs depending on environment. try to keep them in cooler area or windier place at home. as for keeping males together, you need to supervise when they are out together and also be alpha dog yourselves. be firm. actually the males are not so bad when they fight. females tend to fight even worst. they fight like no tomorrow. males just need to show dominance only.

Hi bil,

Thanks for explaining. Now that I know where you are coming from. Allow me to give you a few of my suggestions. Firstly, unless you are puppy mills, only you can make profit from breeding. for any responsible breeder, we all know we dont make money or even break even. We might as well find a part time job. let me break it down for you- the vet checks, extra food, vits, supplements, milkodog, vaccination, MKA registration and of course your time. This is not as easy as just mate the female and let her give birth and sell puppy. lots of thing need to be taken into consideration. Rule of thumb for breeding is to improve the gsd here in malaysia. we need to go forward and not backward. For example- is your female hip certified or is the parents hip certified? Does she show any nerve or temperement problem? What can she produce that will improve the gsd here? You cannot just find a neighbor or relatives gsd male and breed them. If the pups have hip problem or temperement problem, are you prepared to take back the pup and nurture for the rest of pups life? My advise is if you love gsd breed, then dont breed unless you have done your research. There is too much abandoned dogs in spca. Do you want your dogs to end up there? my puppies are like my kids so I really want to keep in contact with the future owners. There are lots of gsd in malaysia that have hip problem, please do not add to it.

Sorry guys, i had to pour out my thought. think twice.

There will be a GSD speciality show in Miri, Sarawak on 25th July. Over 60 entries and a famous judge will be there. Mr Heinz Sheerer from Von Huhnegrab Kennel will be here to judge. I will be there and was wondering if anyone else from here that will be there. Please PM me. We could meet up over there. Lots of germany rated dogs will be there.
