After visiting Lowyat plaza today and meeting those promoters.. I m even more confused rclxub.gif shocking.gif about the pricing of all versions of Windows Vista!!

Can anyone clarify this by posting the correct pricing of both OEM and Retail Price for each and every version of Windows Vista from Home Basic til Ultimate Version?
Tomorrow i m gona visit LYP once more.. to get it!!! rclxm9.gif

1 Female promoter told me that OEM is only for 1 PC...and not transferable..thts the different from Retail! How true is tht?
1 Male promoter told me OEM is like a pirating software and canot be updated online.. Worst promoter I've ever met I think...True? vmad.gif mad.gif

Thanks....

OEM should be purchased along with a new PC, that after installed, it has to be a part of the computer, u can format and reinstall it back to the same pc, its original, legal copy. But its limitation is u CANNOT installed it again into another pc even u dont use the old pc anymore or change to another operating system. Cause it has to run a procedure to bind the copy of the windows to your hardware, i believe its call activate.

After install, u are given 30 days to activate your copy of windows with internet, where microsoft know the OEM copy u purchased is link to the hardware, so if u reinstalled to another computer, u cannot reactivate anymore thus, after 30 days, it will lock your PC.

Retail is different, u have 1 copy, u can install into 1 unit of your computer, u can move it from pc to pc, as long as u have enough license for each pc u have(if u have 5 pc running windows xp pro, u can install into 5 pc), its not bind into any hardware, so u can change, upgrade, so its more expensive. And I think u can have another backup copy running with the retail version(installed into 2 pc with 1 license, as long as they dont run simutanously), its for backup reason(1 pc down, u swap).

u can buy them saparately, the activation is the point of decision, if u activate with wrong pc, sorry, there is no turning back, the key is used, registered, for the 1st pc u activate with.

I donno the price but thats how OEM works.

I think OEM is cheaper compared to retail as the license is only applicable to the PC that comes with it. If u try installing OEM on another machine or yr newer PC with the same CD-key, it is considered as pirated and u won't be able to activate yr windows. As for retail version, u can use it only on 1 machine, but u can use it jz in case u wan to sell off yr old PC and get a new one, the key is still usable in the new PC.

By law, no.

OEM is supposed to be shipped (or rather pre-installed) with a new computer hardware only

This could be the most hilarious statement I've ever seen. I guess he's too desperate to meet his quota in selling retail Vista

but on the other hand, there are a lot of hardware resellers to sell out those OEM-edition windows,so we saw that there has such markets because most of consumers don't know or don't care about what is the type of the software at all.And actually for my sense, the OEM version can cheaper a lot than retail one.

what we only need to consider is how is your computer's mainboard quality as the OEM version will follow the mainboard after you first time install, thus it cannot be actived by other computer or different mainboard.(conclusion from other ppls as well). tongue.gif

The Star newspaper reported
"Prices range from RM860 to RM1,700, but buyers can get up to 17% discount during the promotion period. "

I presume the promotion period is left only today.

By right and law, oem is indeed bind to the hardware where you purchase with together. But I can tell you that you can installed it on few pcs and get them all activated same time (tested and work for times), but I not encouraging you doing so. Also the oem had an activation period where you can active it online for x numbers of times and after that period you had to call up ms hotline for activation through their online customer support (experience with xp pro oem)

*OEM Product must bundle with New PC

That means you have to buy a PC together with the OEM Vista.

OEM is for computer manufacturer like DELL, HP to bundled it with their computer. All support is provided by those manufacturer, u get very limited support from microsoft if buying OEM. For developing market, they don't really care u buy retail or oem, as long its original its consider legal. What they concern most is those pirated 10 bucks CD.

Btw what's the equivalent Vista version for XP Pro?? Vista Business??

OEM PCs are not limited to big brands like Dell or HP.

If Cycom assembled thier own clone PC and put their own brand logo on that PC also, it is considered OEM.

PC is OEM from Cycom, while the PC components are OEM from their respective manufacturers.

Why cant we just buy the OEM version and install them ourselves?
Can or not? The retail version is damn expensive meh.

Once installed, the OS is 'tied' to the machine.

How do they define a new machine?
(swapping CPUs? mobo? HDD?)

What if the primary HDD got corrupted (and
we're unable to properly uninstall the OS)
which we would then need to reinstall the OS
on a new HDD (on the same machine) ...

OEM Pack can be bought together with either 1 of the new hardware components like keyboard, mouse, RAM, CPU, etc OR a full set of PC system.

This is told by Microsoft representative when I attended their conference 2 years back. The same rules should apply on current Windows Vista.

If i m not mistaken, Enterprise wil never hit the retail shelf, its only to be sold by the major server makers. e.g Dell, IBM, HP, Sun and So on, its only installed and well tuned to suit the hardwares in the server... the main and only reason for that is to solidified stability of the servers that run 24/7 nonstop. So only the Microsoft assigned companies are given permission to installed and fine tuned the Enterprise version.

You think everyone want to listen to how you get it for RM5?

If you can get original Vista for RM 5, I give you money and you buy 100 units for me.
If I don't get original Vista then I will sue you RM 50,000 OK?

isn't it ironic when people are willing to buy high end gadgets like nokia nseries, minolta d40, geforce 8800 and intel core 2 duo, but not willing to buy original microsoft windows.

Not to mention it gives them more bragging right tongue.gif

If you own a 8800GTX, you can show off by installing the latest Games with high frame-rate whatsoever.

If you're using a legit Windows Vista, outsiders won't really know/care whether it's legit or not hence there's nothing to show off wink.gif

For software, what you must consider is not only the cost of the Box, Manual and CD, but also the high RnD cost, the support you're receiving throughout the lifespan of the OS (hey, do you really think Microsoft provide monthly security, IE/WMP updates for free?)

Windows Vista Enterprise is available only to Volume License customers who have PCs covered by Microsoft Software Assurance. Basically this applies to corporations with lots of PC's maybe more in hundreds.

I am currently using Windows XP Home Edition which came bundled with my laptop so if I switch to Vista, I should go for Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade or go for the Windows Vista Full Version? Is there any difference between this 2 since the price of the upgrade version is significantly lower than the full version?

You are right. One PC one OS only. But New Oem OS is only for new PC/Laptop.
On my opinion, there is an exceptional case.

Let say : U change mainboard ,change harddisk ,change processor, change Ram for the purpose of upgrading,Microsoft might allow u to use the Oem version.Correct me if I am wrong. icon_rolleyes.gif

well a friend of mine bought a laptop last month... comes with an oem win xp. had to format the laptop after a few weeks due to some problems. cant activate it after that as he changed some specs between the time of 1st activation to reinstallation. all he did was called microsoft, and they issued him with a new product key.. took him less than 5 mins i think.

for upgrading, microsoft doesnt allow user to do clean installations, which mean you will have to upgrade vista on to your existing XPHome or Pro. if your vista crash and again you will have to reinstall your XPhome or pro then again upgrade to vista. rclxub.gif

Exactly. There's other circumstances u will get the product key without any changes. tongue.gif One OS is one time activation, is true. But if ur harddisk spoilt ,softwares corrupted etc.U need re-installed or reformatted the harddisk. All u have to do is just explain the problems u face.

After all, u can't cheating also.Microsoft request ur old product keys verification before they issue a new product keys. notworthy.gif

U can either use phone or thru internet online. thumbup.gif

if u change your mainboard a hundred times, you'll just have to call MS to activate your system.. thats all.. you can still use the OEM key.. this has been going on for my review system for a long time and i can remember all my key presses for my CD Key.. the only problem is that sometimes it takes a long time as you have to press all your keys and listen to the automatic voice repeat it..

For XP
------

Call hotline..
Follow instructions..
Key in CD Key..
MS rejects your CD Key..
Operator picks up call..
repeat CD Key..
Gives you a phone activation code..
DONE..

its actually almost the same with the retail version, just that you can try a few more times more than the OEM..

Wrong. OEM is a full version not an upgrade. Only thing, the agreement you make with Microsoft is that you will install it one one machine only and it must come with a new machine or hardware. To ensure you keep the agreement, they have made online activation compulsory and keeps track of your hardware changes.

It is all about agreements and whether you wanna agree with them or not. In the end, if you couldn't be bothered, you will just end up getting a pirated copy at the pasar malam. If you are buying an OEM to install on an old machine, then just the same as buying pirated stuff, cause you are not complying with the EULA in the end. And updates, fixs and stuff will always be leaked into the net. That is why pirated software users prevail.

You can buy the upgrade and use the upgrade version no matter ho wlong ago you bought your XP. Just that some computer and some copies of windows bought in the past 3-4 months are eligible for a free upgrade to Windows Vista by Microsoft or the Computer Manufacturer. Some Manufacturers, if I am not mistaken, extends this offer to all Vista Capable PCs. So just try calling the Manufacturer and see if you are eligible or not. IF your computer has the Vista Ready sticker, there is high chance that your are.

1. Retail Pack = Install on any PC you want. But limited to one PC at a time.(Maybe can install on one portable PC also, not too sure about Microsoft Vista EULA, but some software allows you to install on one desktop and one laptop as long as you only use either one at a time). If you change hardware, no problem. If you change computer, then you have to uninstall Vista form the old computer then only can install on the new one.

2.OEM = Can only be installed on new PC or when you buy a new hardware that make you eligible for an OEM license.(Check with Microsoft what hardware can). And it will be stuck to that PC forever. If you wanna upgrade, you will have to call Microsoft when you activate and validate your copy of Vista. Tell them that you upgraded and bla bla bla.

3. Upgrade = You must have any version of windows XP already running on your computer. I do not think you can upgrade from a version prior to XP. Call Microsoft to confirm.

4. I do not know the price for OEM or Upgrade. Just call the shop lah. Got so many price list on LYN main page. Download them, get the number and call the shop. If you want to upgrade, you will have to buy the Upgrade Pack. No need to bring any CDs. (Some computer don't even come with Windows CD like my one cause XP Tablet PC has no official CD. It come only pre installed.)

5. If you want a free upgrade you have to contact your manufacturer/distributor or go to their website to find out how you can get a free upgrade. This is an example for Toshiba's PC. Or go an visit Microsoft website, look for the free upgrade section and select your manufacturer. Then you will be directed to your manufacturer's website.

The highest price one should be the retail pack. Check the box before buying. Maybe you can call Microsoft and ask them if they have a recommended retail price and what are their authorised resellers/distributors. Also make sure that you state the version of Vista when you ask the Price, like Homa Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate. So ask them like this "What is the price of an original copy of Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Retail Pack?"

And beware there may be people selling fake windows that are cleverly packed to look like originals. So call Microsoft and find out who is an authorised dealer. You gonna use vista for quite sometime and it cost alot so might as well put in a little effort into it, even if you have to drive a little further or pay a little more. I would easily fork out an extra 30-100 for the peace of mind.
