for shredding, they say speed mechanics is a must have. however i havent really gone through mine yet.
as for beginners, i find guitar for dummies to be one of the best books that covers alot of aspects. i bought a copy but somehow disappeared after i lend it to someone(of whom i forgotten)!
i've got this handbook for jazz musicians thats really good (I STILL CANT PLAY JAZZ). apart from covering theory, the main reason why i would recommend it is that it has alot of good advices on practicing, how to create interesting improvs, how to play in a band(especially we guitarist who always solo and no one realises our bassist..hahahaha), values(yes, even values we musicians should have), etc etc. i think ive given led zep a copy of this book.
not to forget, GUITAR MAGAZINES!!! well, thats what keeps me entertained and motivated
edit: i also have a guitar setup and repair guide book. very helpful at times

My lead guitarist used to play the advance versions on his electric guitar so much his left hand became noticably larger than his right LOL. It really developed his finger dexterity to a point he started shredding Satriani solos and all, prob why he ended up in Berkeley and I ended up taking Business studies in Sheffield Hanon finger exercises has easier versions now but the essential elements of working your fingers are still there. To me most of the chord books are good...as long as they are presented in a legible format. I normally play the exercises on my bass to develop strength and speed. LOL my friend Nick used to say that Bassists have to be twice as fast and strong to keep up with the electric guitar solos cos they have to replicate the notes on thicker strings....he was right.

I'd like to suggest : Troy Stetina Series, ie 1) Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar plus for metalheads, 1a) Heavy Metal Rhythm Guitar vol 1 & 2 1b) Heavy Metal Lead Guitar vol 1 ( I heard vol 2 is quite tough... Malmsteen would sweat ) Maybe alternative to Hanon exercise & Pumping Nylon, I personally would get Speed Mechanics. IMHO, Pumping Nylon caters for classical and Hanon is piano... but can adapt the exercise. This post has been edited by Banzai_san: Feb 7 2007, 11:05 AM

All lessons are via listening to the CD, but need you practise with own instrument. Meaning, lessons are taught in the CD but to get result, you need to do the lesson with your instrument (guitar or piano or etc...) I bought the CDs from http://www.perfectpitch.combut I bought both the perfect pitch and relative pitch courses

yup, its expensive. Did it help...? well Im still in the early stages of Pitch Perfect course and Ive not put much effort. What I can say is, I have the feeling that if I really put effort on the lessons, I really believe I'm able to achieve a pitch perfect hearing. Although Im a little lazy, but I do not regret splashing that much money for a course that I think will deliver its promise. Just that I think I need a strict teacher with a long cane to monitor my musical lessons.. The concept is different (I think) from other courses (not that Ive tried others). The way Pitch perfect does is identifying the 'colors' of pitch, eg A has a different 'color' than A# for example. Once you've achieved the color recognition, you'll be easy to identify any note. Not like some course that rely on memorizing the pitches of the notes.

VERY IMPORTANT: yellow pages and some pizza delivery leaflet. And a scale book with notes and tabs. So you can learn to read notes easier. Or you'd be tempted to look at tabs and not learn the notes anyway. But it's still useful

banzai, lolx, I'm just reccomending a stantard book that should be in every serious classical player.
Taking my grade 6 soon...sigh. *Scared*
Ummm, I kinda forget the name for the book, but it's I THINK Tarrega's 120 exercises?
It improves string crossings for your right, acceleration (you need a metronome...) and basic rythmn.
Another nice book to have is Spanish for Guitar and Bach for Guitar. Oh, and anything Tarrega, roxxors!
