for shredding, they say speed mechanics is a must have. however i havent really gone through mine yet.

as for beginners, i find guitar for dummies to be one of the best books that covers alot of aspects. i bought a copy but somehow disappeared after i lend it to someone(of whom i forgotten)!

i've got this handbook for jazz musicians thats really good (I STILL CANT PLAY JAZZ). apart from covering theory, the main reason why i would recommend it is that it has alot of good advices on practicing, how to create interesting improvs, how to play in a band(especially we guitarist who always solo and no one realises our bassist..hahahaha), values(yes, even values we musicians should have), etc etc.
i think ive given led zep a copy of this book.

not to forget,
GUITAR MAGAZINES!!! well, thats what keeps me entertained and motivated

edit: i also have a guitar setup and repair guide book. very helpful at times

QUOTE(stefanong @ Feb 2 2007, 05:54 PM)
My lead guitarist used to play the advance versions on his electric guitar so much his left hand became noticably larger than his right LOL. It really developed his finger dexterity to a point he started shredding Satriani solos and all, prob why he ended up in Berkeley and I ended up taking Business studies in Sheffield smile.gif

Hanon finger exercises has easier versions now but the essential elements of working your fingers are still there.

To me most of the chord books are good...as long as they are presented in a legible format.

I normally play the exercises on my bass to develop strength and speed. LOL my friend Nick used to say that Bassists have to be twice as fast and strong to keep up with the electric guitar solos cos they have to replicate the notes on thicker strings....he was right.
