variable or fixed?

best bang for the buck is Hoya Pro series.

why do you need it for?
very very few scenarios require a nd filter.
my filter mostly sit at home 99.999999% of the time. sweat.gif

well do take note the limitation of variable ND.
they create an X pattern at higher stops.

here is an example of x pattern.

user posted image

normally variable ND is good up to 5-6 stops after that start to create X pattern.
if you need to go higher than 6 stops get a fixed ND filter.
From my experience with conditions in bright sunlight, 10 stops is a must.

that being said Hoya is still the best bang for the buck.

no problem.
yeah they are not cheap. a full set of ND filters can cost as much as a new lens.
try hunting around for a used one.
many are still in good condition since they are not used often. icon_rolleyes.gif

May I ask, is this "long exposure" look ok?

EM1.2, 12-40mm Pro.

No! Trying to ascertain everybody's opinion here about usage or non-usage of ND. Photo above is experimental, applied both motion blur and Gaussian blur.

No experience in using ND, had tried taking 30 photos over a span of 5 min, camera rest on solid platform, no tripod, then "Mean/Average" the layer, not bad too....

Lets see....

1/25 shutter speed not consider long exposure.
you had to close down your aperture to f22 and diffraction will make your pic look soft.
also at 1/25 of a sec will not really smooth out the water surface.

sorry i still have the habit of pixel peeping...... sweat.gif
