The location you picked is pretty much ok for tourists. If you're going to Sandakan Central Market, do go earlier to visit the Fish Market area.

For safety reason, I advise against walking around town after sunset. Explore town during daytime, and night time you can consider exploring Bandar Kim Fung/Indah which has more buzz (and safer).

For foodie, must try Sim Sim 7th Bridge (there's a halal and non-halal restaurant there, try out their noodles and century eggs dumpling), Bak kut teh in Bandar Nam Tung (non-halal, spicy soup seafood & vege are a must), also must try out egg tarts (Kedai Kopi Wing Hup Lee, childhood fave), UFO tarts.

Grab is widely available in KK town. Suggest renting a car for Kundasang, with waze it's easy to navigate anyway.

Please pre-book your car so you can ensure you get the car type you want. 7 person with luggages will require 2 cars. Last time with 4 adults and 1 child, we rent 1 Alza and we almost couldn't fit all our luggages. I rented via a company called Kinabalu Trails (friend's relative working there), but you should be able to search via Kayak etc.

planning for semporna trip in early sept for a 4D3N.
Some question below:

1. is Sept a best time to go? any high tide or rough ocean?
2. Have 2 choices of journey. Northern - Tun Sakaran/PomPom/Mataking OR Southern - Mabul/Sipdan. For first timer, which is recommended?

are you diving or snorkelling? for northern are you staying in semporna or at Mataking? First timer snorkellers I think Northen will be better. Mabul is not really a nice island. Tun Sakaran/Pom Pom/Mataking have better beaches I feel. If you can get sipadan permit its different though.

Snorkelling only
Is Mabul not nice? I’ve been making some research around that Southern part is way better than Northern? Where tun sakaran is heavy commercialize and not that great anymore.

Furthermore, staying in semporna give bad vibes in terms not cleanliness? I’ve no intention of hammering semporna, just got feedback from relatives who travelled there before

Hi, if you are snorkelling and no budget concern I will recommend mataking island haha. nicer island, nicer place to stay.

if theres budget constraint.. hmm.. personally i will prefer semporna to mabul, because can go tun sakaran (bohey dulang, sibuan and mantabuan), more things to do, and bohey dulang hiking, unless you will be able to secure sipadan permit.

Semporna is a little crowded I feel, but its better compared to pre-pandemic.. maybe you can consider to stay in places like luma selakan or something, i keep seeing it being promoted in facebook/insta, personally have not stayed there.

hello, yes, normally theres 3 option if not mistaken: A) Mataking, Pom Pom, B) Bohey Dulang, Sibuan, Mantabuan, C) Mabul Kapalai

For diver like me will recommend B to snorkellers because have abit of hiking in bohey dulang, and beach at sibuan and some snorkelling. I would not recommend C because its basically no beach just snorkelling option. A could be good also, but no hiking to viewpoint.
