Do keep in mind that the gunmetal paint on those Mechrevo Z2 units (also available as the MechaNike F117 Break in what looks like an even lighter shade of silver) MIGHT help it dissipate heat better then the Onyx (even though the bottom is still black across all 3 versions). Theoretically, anyway.

But Furmark 80/70 sounds about rite, at least according to the "back-of-my-hand thermometer" I had while testing the sample. Also, if it ever gets too hot for you there's always the "panic-button": The full speed fan override next to the power.

That said, I couldn't help but wonder how a full 1070 would actually do IF it ever ends up inside an Onyx. Maybe 80-90 under full Furmark, sans any UV or repasting?

Oh and the speakers in the Onyx are not bad TBH. At the very least, they ARE better than the ones on the S5X, but don't expect Harman/Kadon levels of bass or anything from them.

Read the reviews of mechrevo Z2 and while I became excited with Onyx, I disappointed with one thing, the thickness is 23mm at the thickest while the weight seems to be in the region of 2kg or 2.5kg including the brick. As I haven't yet got my hand on it, hopefully it won't looks too bulky for a thin laptop.

It does look like the Onyx is bulkier while the GS at least looks sexier.

Still, I've ordered Onyx as I can't bother to wait for a laptop.

after it is available u still need to wait for promotion... if not ur heart will shattered when u see those promo biggrin.gif

Haha if I keep hold back and waiting for promo, I won't have a laptop at all.
Just that if 1070 take a while before coming to Onyx, it might causing more dilemma as by that time it might be a few months away from gtx 2k.

Well, the Onyx is thick for a reason *wink wink*. Also the GS series has never really been "solid" IMHO, all of them are unfortunately flexy in one part or another - while I can tell you from experience that the Onyx is pretty solid indeed.

Do enjoy your new laptop bro and do post drills for us.

Hi all,

ONYX actual thickness is 19.9mm. It does have a 3mm rubber feet at the bottom to make it taller for better cooling.

hi all, been a while since i'm online. just curious, for anyone that is using i7-4720HQ, especially the Illegear S5, what are you idle temp, and max load temp under prime 95? Just applied liquid metal thermal paste, but seems like the thermal especially idle isn't as good as i expected, hovering around high 50~low60, and prime 95 benchmark gives me ~92C on default setting, but the odd thing is, the fan on CPU is not even spinning at max speed :S
Anyone facing similar stuff? Trying to get good thermal but seems like even applying liquid metal didn't perform as good as expected

Hi there, 92C is with liquid metal application and turbo boost enabled?

yes, i guess should be turbo boost enabled, i set max processor state to 99% already, but clockspeed still go more than the default 2.6Ghz for dunno what reason. I used intel XTU to monitor the clock speed and notice that it is going up to 3.1Ghz and hit current limit throttle with 4 cores active. Non turbo boost would probably stayed at 2.6Ghz i guess? And yeah, liquid metal application. Coollaboratory liquid pro is used in my case after some researching

anyway the main reason is the fan setting i believe, and maybe a bug in the hotkey software. I notice the fan is turning around perhaps just 50% speed. i manually press Fn+1 to boost it to max fan speed, the temperature dropped to ~85C or so. After that when i turn off max fan speed, it seems like it was not even detecting the temperature correctly anymore and only spin at 20% fan speed. temperature spiked like crazy, fortunately i am able to stop the torture test at around 98C, so there should be no permanent dmg. After that I installed command centre from clevo again and set custom fan setting, and seems like the fan will go ~80% speed when temperature is nearing 90C, but still not full speed and thus the temperature after 10 minutes of torture test is 93C peak, despite already undervolted by -0.04v on core voltage and cache voltage.

edit: I believe temperature did improve quite a lot during gaming. Prime 95 was the tool that i used for the above test and that was an extreme case example anyways. FF XIII was running at h~70C previously, and now it's maintaining at 61~62C mostly. Just kinda odd about the fan control during extreme temperature. I'll test on some other games that previously could hit >90C and see if it's the same temp again.

I've been planning to purchase Illegear Onyx during the Lazada birthday sales but thinking whether it could arrive before 4th May, anyone got experience buying from Lazada and whether the shipping time is fast or slow? Could you choose the option to let the Illegear team to send it to you for a fee like in the website?

Hi, i am using illegear onyx. I feel that the temperature very unstable, keep rise and fall? It will hit 80'C above even i am not playing game, i just do normal stuff. Is this normal? The fan is very annoying when the temperature keep rise and fall.

what processor are you using? I suspect that's Intel Turbo Boost kicking in. Sometimes your normal stuff, like webpage will take up some heavy resource due to ads and other 'feature' on the site, and intel turbo boost will boost your CPU to higher clockspeed to gain more performance, but at the cost of higher heat and higher power consumption. When you see your CPU temp going high, check your task manager and see if there are any processes taking up core utilization

Hi meaninglessx7

Our ONYX's benchmark result doesn't hit 80C in normal usage. May I know which temperature monitoring software you are using and 80C is CPU or GPU temperature?

P/S: We do Furmark, Unigene Heaven and Cinebench simultaneously to stress the laptop to the maximum potential and the GPU remains below 75C.

using the onyx commander center, CPU not always hit 80C in normal usage but realised it does for sometime. The CPU and GPU normal usage at 38 - 40C. Not sure why, but as i know during installation of software or running a software or surfing web will not lead to high CPU temp.

Like I mentioned earlier surfing net does sometimes have heavy cpu load. Some sites have cpu intensive ads or elements that would consume cpu constantly and cause high cpu temp. Tech inferno forum for instance constantly eat up 1 cpu max load for me. Check if browser u are using and see if the cpu utilisation is 13% or 25% on task manager or not, if yes u need to check which exact site is taking up the cpu load
