Safety the key for Singapore, say F1 team bosses
QUOTE SEPANG, Malaysia, April 6 (Reuters) - Safety should be the top priority when Singapore's bid to host Formula One's first night race is considered, Renault and Ferrari team bosses said on Friday. SourceSingapore is keen to join neighbours Malaysia on the calendar with a proposal to stage a street race under floodlights. Renault team principal Flavio Briatore said he would back Singapore as long as drivers were safe. "Really, if the driver is happy and technically it is possible to make sure it is safe for the drivers and the spectators, I am happy to do more races," Briatore told a news conference at the Malaysian Grand Prix. "Especially if the race is held at night, (the time difference) is perfect for Europe. There would be more publicity and good communication for Formula One." A decision on Singapore is expected to be made after the Malaysian Grand Prix. Ferrari team boss Jean Todt said there was room for another street circuit, with Monaco already the glamour highlight of the calendar, though night racing may draw protests from television broadcasters. "We must make sure safety is the number one item," said Todt. "I was talking with people from TV and there may be some doubts there. "There is a street race in Monte Carlo with a lot of history. People talk about why we can't have another street race but we need to make sure that it goes in the right direction and that it is a really good race." Todt dismissed criticism that a Singapore Grand Prix would continue the trend of taking races away from Formula One's traditional stronghold of Europe. "Formula One is a world-wide event," said Todt. "On one side I like history and most of the races are still in Europe. "You have places like Malaysia, Turkey, China and Abu Dhabi pushing for better organisation. And it pushes Europe to improve their organisation. It is healthy competition." Briatore said Europe must raise their standards in accommodating the sport's increasingly influential corporate culture. "This is the evolution of Formula One. Now corporations are more involved. We need hospitality, hotels near the airport and good service and in some places (in Europe) this is not the case, including Magny-Cours in France. "Sure, Europe is important but I'm happy to race in different countries." |

The race was not started yet (listen to the commentator) I think that's why the mechanic went in to check on the car, he thought it was safe. Malaysia jumping the gun Contract extension not yet signed QUOTE Organisers of the Malaysian Grand Prix have not yet signed a five-year contract extension with Formula One officials, it has emerged. We reported at the weekend that the event at Sepang will be a fixture of the annual calendar until at least 2015, due to the existence of a new agreement extending the current deal, which ends in 2010. But the local newspaper Straits Times insists that the Malaysian government has not yet decided whether to sign the Formula One document, which has been received by circuit chairman Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir. "We have not signed it yet," he confirmed, explaining that the contract contains several new clauses, probably relating to necessary improvements to the circuit that was described recently as 'shabby' by Bernie Ecclestone. Relations between Malaysia and Ecclestone may also be strained due to the possibility of a Grand Prix in nearby Singapore; Sepang officials think the region should have only one race. But Mokhzani insisted that the improvements will be made to the slightly outdated venue near Kuala Lumpur as soon as a new contract is signed. E.A. Source GMM opsss..... |

Spyker fire spells near-disaster
QUOTE F1 narrowly averted disaster at the Bahrain Grand Prix earlier this month. SourceWe have learned that Spyker mechanics almost lost control of a fire that broke out near the back of the team's garage at the Sakhir circuit on the Saturday of qualifying. Video footage of the incident shows mechanics scrambling to the scene with fire extinguishers, as huge flames licked dangerously around nearby compressed-air bottles. The team has yet to comment on the incident. Spyker BBQ Session Video This post has been edited by -= Virgil =-: Apr 23 2007, 09:06 PM |
