QUOTE
While the official statement from McLaren said that the no show of Fernando Alonso at Malaysia's testing was because he was given the week off by the team, in reality he's now at the McLaren technology centre in Woking, to help further develop the parts for the car, according to F1Live. It was said that he went immediatly there after the Australian GP to give teammate Lewis Hamilton a chance to relax after his first Grand Prix. Lewis will test in Malaysia when he take over the car from regular test driver Pedro de la Rosa this Wednesday

QUOTE(kapitan @ Mar 28 2007, 06:58 PM)
Today I went there, but I think I wont go on race day. Its damn hot out there, and haf to walk so far to just get to the grandstand.

Honestly, it was quite worth it. The sound of the engine rev and gear changes as well as the traction control, it was phenomenal. I haf to cover my ears cos the sound was too loud when the car went pass me.

When I first reach the entrance, I heard some sound liao but in my mind, I tot why ppl said must bring ear plug cos little bit only. When I walk past the first corner (covered with lots of plants), the traction control n gear downshifting sound was a bit like CNY crackers already. Imagine my surprise when I reach the grandstand, totally unbearable. Even when the cars did the pitstop, it was loud enough already. But the full throttle sound is totally off the mark liao. Nothing can compared with it I think... mayb airplane take off sound can...

One more thing is that, when you view from tv screen, you cant feel their cornering n braking speed. When you see it in real, you feel like WTF. From full throttle to braking to cornering actually takes seconds to complete which feel very long on tv but in front of your eyes, feels like a blink of your eyes. I guess thats why so many ppl go watch it.
*
Heh, now you know. I had this one guy in another forum which I had a fight because he said going to watch live is not worth it. THERE IS NOTHING MORE WORTH IT THAN WATCHING IT LIVE!!!
I wish you had watched it during the V10 days. that was LOUD

FIA acts to close bodywork loophole
QUOTE
The FIA has introduced stringent new bodywork tests to close a loophole in the regulations that Ferrari and BMW Sauber were believed to be using to their advantage in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

The move comes after rival teams drew attention to the floor mounting system on Ferrari’s F2007 chassis, which they argued used a spring device to improve the car’s aerodynamics at speed.

McLaren boss Ron Dennis alluded to the issue in Melbourne – without specifically mentioning Ferrari – pointing out that the first race of the season always gives rise to question marks over interpretation of the rules.

Dennis suggested that if the FIA took no action to clarify contentious points, rival teams would adopt similar solutions for their cars before the next race.

And a report by autosport.com reveals that McLaren’s engineering director Paddy Lowe wrote to FIA technical delegate Charlie Whiting raising the floor mounting issue and asking for permission to use a Ferrari-style system.

Lowe’s letter was clearly intended to prompt the governing body to clarify whether it will continue to deem such systems legal even though their effect is to circumvent rules limiting bodywork flexibility.

F1’s technical regulations state that bodywork (including the floor) must not deflect more than 5mm vertically when a 500 Newton load is applied upwards.

The spring device used by Ferrari has been on the team’s cars since the end of last season and has passed all subsequent scrutineering checks.

The concern from rival teams is that, while the car passes the 5mm deflection test at rest, the spring device causes the floor to lift under greater loads at high speed, leading the diffuser to stall.

If true, this would confer aerodynamic benefits – reducing drag and thus either increasing straight-line speed or allowing the team to run more downforce for a given straight-line speed.

The FIA has responded by toughening up the deflection test to ensure that the bodywork flexibility rules are strictly adhered to in future.

From the Malaysian Grand Prix onwards, cars will have to pass scrutineering with any spring mounting devices removed.

The change could have a significant effect on the competitive state of play in F1, since the two teams expected to have to modify their cars are Ferrari and BMW Sauber.

Ferrari was a dominant force in the Australian GP while BMW lies third in the constructors’ championship.

laugh.gif Ask the FIA if you can use the same thing as your rival is a new trick it seems to get thing banned

heh, lot of hot air. What with the "According the speed limit"? So F1 cars after this cannot go past the limit there? might as well use a hearse race

damn "cut throat". The cost of going to a race is more suitable for those mat salleh people who can afford but for local, its very expensive.

Foods and drinks were free for us at the main grandstand last 2 years when I went there. I even tapau the leftovers after the qualy and race finished. Also, i show student ID, and the guard just pull blind eye on my seludup drinks and food at the main gate....

It's raining.. lol at Massa, as he's driving the test day today, and he will have no dry run at all...

anyways
Kimi Raikkonen won't know until the start of the Malaysian GP weekend whether or not he will need a new engine.

Although the Finn won the season-opening race in Australia, it later emerged that his engine had suffered a small water leak, which could have caused damage.

Explaining the problem, Raikkonen told Autosport: "I think we used the full potential for most of the (Australian) race but we had a small water leak in the engine so the engine was getting hot, and we had to cool it down."

A damaged engine could cost Raikkonen ten places on the Malaysian grid as 2007 regulations state that each driver must use the same engine for two race weekends or incur the engine penalty.

However, for now, Ferrari have yet to decide if they will chance racing the engine or swap it for a brand-new unit.

"Hopefully it is okay," he said. "The engine has been checked, we need to see what we do.

"We will decide on Friday or Saturday. We are trying to look at the situation. We have to wait and see on Saturday. So far the engine is okay but we will see."

Even at the back of the grid...Ferrari will blast in front.
At least 6th position...like Massa did in Melbourne.

Those double apex  drool.gif Ferrari's background...massive straight line speed.
Can get 2-3 seconds a lap there.
-17 seconds in Melbourne.
With those double apex in Malaysia...surely can win the GP from the back.
Also, they might gave custom made engine like they gave Michael in Interlagos last year..see what it can do  rolleyes.gif

Even though other team won the Malaysian GP...it's because Ferrari's starting at the
back of the grid  whistling.gif
But they still can manage 6th position.
If they won the GP...1-2 maybe...it would be a spit to the face for the other teams  tongue.gif

Double apex? heck, any car with good downforce + the low speed of the V8 means that the corner has lose the appeal during the V10 days. All cars can go flat out there, just like they can go flat out on Eu Rouge these days.

Kimi is using the spare car. IMO even if he used his own car, they will fit it with another engine.

because they can afford to as they didn't run any testing prior to the opening GP, thus they have less testing milage than anyone else. Teams are sending only one car as they have limited milage this season.

He rather cry in the bush alone instead of going around smashing things up. remember Italy '99?

Added on March 29, 2007, 9:35 pmLewis Hamilton underlined his talent by clocking the fastest time in Thursday's testing at Malaysia.

The Brit was the quickest driver around a mostly wet Sepang circuit. The morning session was hindered by a wet track and a late afternoon shower left only a small window of dry running.

The McLaren driver recovered from an oil-leak at mid-day to set a best time of 1:35.918, which was approximately two-tenths of a second ahead of Mark Webber in the improving Red Bull RB3.

Another team that has struggled thus far is Toyota, managed to clock the third best time thanks to Ralf Schumacher's best lap.

Hamilton's time was seven-tenths slower than Kimi Raikkonen's Wednesday best, but this was due to the changeable weather conditions.

The Finnish driver sat out the Thursday session and was replaced by Brazilian team-mate Felipe Massa who managed the fifth fastest time of the day.

Jenson Button in the Honda completed a mammoth 92 laps as the Japanese outfit look to move in the right direction.

BMW's Nick Heidfeld had an eventful day as his car caught fire following an oil leak.

All the teams with the exception of Toro Rosso have opted to continue the test for an extra day and will be running on Friday.

Thursday's Test Times from Sepang

01. Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes (B) 1:35.918 57

02. Webber Red Bull-Renault (B) 1:36.138 62

03. R.Schumacher Toyota (B) 1:36.700 69

04. Liuzzi Toro Rosso-Ferrari (B) 1:36.712 56

05. Massa Ferrari (B) 1:36.947 64

06. Rosberg Williams-Toyota (B) 1:37.070 71

07. Button Honda (B) 1:37.472 92

09. Heidfeld BMW Sauber (B) 1:38.551 35

10. Kovalainen Renault (B) 1:39.654 20

For a wet track that IS fast

Added on March 29, 2007, 9:39 pmAccording to autosport, the teams have agreed to extend the testing session by another day due to bad weather. Only STR did not agree with the 1 day extension

I remember Hakkinen when traction control was first introduced, he turned it off to get faster laptimes. He never liked it
Interestingly, Jenson Button's Honda last season had a problem with traction control in Brazil when it turned off by mistake and he was 6 seconds slower than his fastest lap

April 1

Honda Racing F1 are to replace the radical earth livery as early as the Malaysian Grand Prix, replacing the picture of our planet with images from other planets, and RealHondaF1.com snapped a picture in secret testing at Sepang yesterday morning.

First up will be Jupiter, the gas giant, selected as it better represents the current performance of the Honda Racing F1 team. Orbiting the Sun every 11.86 years, the planet comprised of hot air is considerably slower than some of the rival planets, such as Mars or even Earth itself. Fortunately, Jupiter still laps the Sun quicker than the likes of Saturn or Neptune.

The new 'Jupiter' livery.
"This is a fantastic new direction for the Honda Racing F1 team," explained Shirley Knot, Honda's Planetary Alignment Officer, "and shows the world that we're serious about challenging for the title, and not just about attracting attention through bold liveries and audacious marketing campaigns.

"It's also an opportunity to extract a bit more cash from our fans, through the soon to be launched myjupiterdream.com website. This new site will allow our fans to donate money while making pledges, such as promising to heat their homes using natural gas, or create a generally stormy atmosphere."

The team will be changing the image on the car from race to race, relative to the performance against our on track rivals. For Malaysia and Bahrain, the team have readied Jupiter and Saturn images, while the Spanish Grand Prix is expected to see the team using Uranus.

The French Grand Prix is expected too see the use of Mars, the red planet being just 0.88 years an orbit slower than the current Earth livery. By the time the Formula One championship reaches Hungary, home of Jenson Button's win last season, the expectation is to be using Venus, the brightest planet in the sky, and 0.385 years per orbit quicker than Earth.

Only when the world championship is in sight will Mercury be used.
