Added on May 14, 2007, 6:15 pmguys..i have a question here

is it 'wrong' to swim (front crawl) with a kicking board put between the legs and cross the feet?

i did that recently..find it a little hard to do the stroke..i thought that's because i'm not used to that 'style'

but then a kid was doing the same got scolded by his coach..i din hear what the coach said but i can guess from his gestures told the kid to do laps as punishment

there's nothing wrong with it instead its a very good to train ur upper body strength and maintaining balance without kicking.. but using a kick board, wouldn't it be a lil big? try a buoy instead.. thus, u'll find it easier to swim..

owh thanks man..i thought it's me who's doing it wrong

yeah it really helps to correct the hand stoke and would be easier using buoy..it's the smaller thing shaped like err bow tie..right?

You can do pulling with the kick board but because of the length you'll "swish" back & forth a lot in the water. Be sure that you're focused on your form and headed straight i.e. not fish tailing about. Think that's the only issue.

Also be sure not to put it at your knees, since there's a chance you may twist/dislocate them.

My 02 cents.

what do u mean 'the length'?
is it the kick board being put horizontally between the legs?

for me i put it vertically..so most of its length is above the surface..people see it like a shark fin laugh.gif

Ya vertically. Horizontally is just too weird/difficult smile.gif

Anyway get a pulling board and you should have no problems. [I hate pulling, think most girls hate pulling .. ha ha]

I'm old so we call them "boards". When I swam still had those kick boards that were like styrofoam type .. with that horrible squeaky sound .. yuck.

And it's just you that think it's kinky wink.gif

There's nothing wrong with using the kick board in the pull exercise. It's a form of resistance training actually and very useful in teaching the kids to keep their feet and knees together with their legs properly tucked in when doing flip turns. In fact, when I train my team, I have them use kick boards for pulling exercises sometimes. We do less work with paddles however. Too much paddle work may cause shoulder injuries.

I suppose the kid was being scolded by his coach for using the kick board because he forgot to bring his pull buoy to practice.

Try some interval training or fartlek swims. Here's something very simple to start off:
1x200 @ 4:30 EN1 Moderate }
10x50 @ 1:10 EN2 Fast/Hard } 1 set
1x100 @ 2:30 REC Easy Swim }

ok this is Andrew's recommendation..

can u tell me which part u don't understand? i'll elucidate it for u smile.gif
