teduck, i have not heard of that company before.
yawhong, where will u be studying? it differs if u're studying in private and public institutions. it is recommended that for IPTS u start to collect books as their libraries arent as complete as the IPTAs. which means the IPTA students can spend more on computers or other stationaries. for most IPTAs, u will need to bring about RM150-RM200 for stationaries. the to-buy list will be distributed when u register, and usually the school will organize some sort of lot purchase so u can get stuffs cheaper than standard retails. if u already have some of the stuffs needed, then ofcourse, u wont need to buy em. standard stationaries needed for a 1st year would be:
ii. t-square (A2 or A1) iii. pencil set iv. scale ruler v. steel ruler vi. drawing board (A2 or A1) vii. drafting pen set viii. painting set (brushes, water/oil/acrylic paints, palette) it varies from each schools. for UTM degree, they emphasize less on manual draftmanship and concentrate more on computers, so the biggest drafting size u'll do is A2. then u'll move on to computer draftings. no drafting tables will be provided, hence most students will need to buy the drawing boards. other schools like UiTM and USM which still concentrates on manual skills will provide drafting tables, hence u dont need to use drafting boards, but u will need A1 t-squares and probably larger set-square. there are lots of books that u can read about architecture, but frankly not many of it will make any sense as they're written for those who have initiated in the design education. for example, they will use the term "open space", which to layman literally means a space that has no walls. but in actual fact, open space is a specific term that has a huge and detailed definition which wont make sense to most people. but the simplest book i'd recommend is "experiencing architecture". look it up on amazon. u can get this book quite easily in MPH, basheer or kinokuniya. until u start ur architectural studies, i dont recommend reading any other books. |

I'm interested in architecture course. But, this year I'm going to f6.
So, I wonder should I take physic subject or not? I think this subject is also related with architecture course. Am I right? What is the minimum requirement for those STPM student to continue their study in architecture course at local University? |

the requirements are:
i. passed ur SPM with good results with credits in BM and maths (they will look into ur SPM eventhough u have ur STPM. i just found out about this...) ii. minimum of C (2.00) on 3 subjects including pengajian am iii. not colour blind. other disabilities should be informed earlier, but usually does not affect the entry requirements. so no, physics is not a requirement, but having it will be an advantage. but be aware that fulfilling the minimum requirement means u will automatically get in. i'll clean up this thread for the next batch (intake 2008/2009), and hopefully u'll stick around. this thread have gone waaaaay too long. |

I would like to ask, when do university students for architecture start to be taught using PCs? Is it required to purchase one upon enrolling in the course? Or it's not a rush thing to buy one?

most universities in msia has this "thing" that they would try to make the 1st year subjects less dependent on computers, except for doing assignments or reports. even so, the computer labs usually have more than enough PCs to accommodate that kinda usage.
in UTM skudai we have about 80 PCs for architecture students with enough printing facilities up to A0 size. there are another 50 PCs which are shared with 4 other courses in FAB. given that most seniors already own their own PCs, and the students intake is commonly 90 per year, we have more than enough PCs to go around. but out of 80, only 30 are tuned for heavy graphics. |

That means I'll choose to wait. Maybe I'll skip Santa Rosa and wait for its revision next year, and that's Montevina. The thing is I'm not sure whether I'll be able to wait till 2008, as I'm already tempted to buy one.

I wanna ask, are we provided with internet access if we're staying at the campus hostels using our own lappies or PCs? Do we need to extra pay for that? How much would it be? And how fast would the speed be? Does it have any limits or conditions for that? Thanks.

at utm u can choose to stay in da hostels that have internet. i think its a one off fee for one semester...around Rm30 i think.
limitations? frequent disconnections and strictly no P2P. bandwidth is limited but on off peak hours like 4-5am u can get good download speeds off around 20kb/s. At peak hours wif evyone using at the same time... be prepared for slower than 56K speeds! |

i've stayed in college for about a year or so, and the internet connection is quite decent. it's no broadband, but since u dont do p2p or massive dloadings, there's not much difference. it does struggle a bit on the streaming part though.
i still blame it on the computer science dept. i'm damn sure they are still p2p-ing behind those doors |

They have detector and they roam into ur room in the middle of the night? Any consequence if being caught for P2P-ing? |
