not sure about the PC vs Mac stuff, but in the UK, the variety of softwares are way bigger than in msia. autocad have plagued msian schools that it became the only standard for drafting. most of us academics in msia disagreed, hence UTM adapted vectorworx aside from autocad, and USM with microstation.

do note that in the UK, they dont actually teach u these stuff as part of the syllabus. u learn that urself or through elective or extra-curricular courses.

and yes, books in the UK are far cheaper than in msia. there's even this culture of selling 2nd hand books. and the booklist? that's not "to buy list", it's a "to read list". architecture doesnt have a text book like most other courses. u'll understand why once u've started ur first semester.

so u can either buy them, or be like me, and just borrow the from the library biggrin.gif. i've never bought a single architecture book in my life but i know i've read more books than those who bought them bcoz my reading list is not limited to how much money i have.

haha, erm than can we use those "ahem" software? i really not plan to buy original software like autocad... it really expensive for me...

Erm, ya the booklist i stated mainly is to read list... So i guess i just go library borrow since i dy pay for the fees.. I don feel use extra money just for the book... However, If it is text book and a must for examination, than no choice but i have to buy it

ur equipment list already have virtually everything u need to start studying architecture. i cant imagine what else u wanna add in there. probably 1-2 sketch books and artline 0.6 felt tip pen.

apple aperture? no, it's not important, but probably handy to have.

what software u use is generally irrelevant. what u need to have are softwares that fulfills what u want to do. in general, architecture students will need to:

i. draft - autocad, vectorworx, archicad etc
ii. 3d modelling - autocad 3d, 3dsmax, sketchup etc
iii. raster image processing - photoshop, painter, aperture etc
iv. vector composition - illustrator, coreldraw etc.

there are different softwares out there other than those i've mentioned above to achieve atleast one of the categories. which software u use is totally depends on u, ur budget and the availability of the software. ur university might even introduce a new software that nobody even heard of.

i don quite understand, u bought in MPH u bought many books also no discount rite? I just want to know if compare to UK book price, where is cheaper? Or i can just go Amazon buy?

Ya i know Mac is good, no virus blah blah.. But is it suitable for Architecture students? Many of software like Autocad, 3d studio Max all is window based. So if i buy mac and boot to window, is it got possibility to get infected by virus?

i dont really suggest you to take a mac if you really want to go for architecture studies . many softwares are still based on windows . if you boot ACAD on windows xp , yes .. it can run . but for what you buy a mac and you use windows xp .
moreover , you have to know that , if you buy the iMac , it is still based on Laptop chipset , Logic Board , hence if there is any 24 hours job , it will be quite tricky and not good for your mac .
take a mac laptop for normal usage , and spend another 2K for a desktop .
Macbook for normal usage , 2K for desktop for heavy workload - compare to spend 8K on one macbookpro .

thx, actually i got 1 notebook which is window base and is core duo 1...
i thinking to get a new macbook pro because i think the performance is better and i think architecture need software like aperture. SO i guess i can just stick to my toshiba lappie temporary.

well , i think different arc school gives different approach . but in general , a windows based will be much easier as most software will still based on it .

what u need to think is not to buy now .
wait next 2 or 3 months . leopard and ilife 08 together with macbook .

part 2 is usually conducted full time. u can easily differentiate a part 1 and a part 2 degree by noting its award title. part 1 usually goes by "Bachelor of Science in blablabla", while part 2 usually goes by "Bachelor of Architecture" or "Masters of Architecture".

part 2 takes 2 years to finish.

how many years is that? if it's 3 years and intakes are from A-levels/STPM, then it's part 1.

that depends on the nature of the programme. each school handles their part time courses differently, some split the entire course into smaller, more manageable portions which extends the programme up to 3 or 4 years. others may just adapt a night/weekend programme that covers the exact same syllabus as the prime students, which would probably just add 6 months the most.
