Hey everyone, does anyone have a recommendation of a quieter mechanical keyboard that can be used at the office (i've tried the mx blues and browns and prefer the blues but they are just too noisy) any suggestions?
*
I used to have a brown mechanical keyboard at work. It did annoy a number of people.

I suggest you go with Topre switches as they are much quieter. I am currently using and have been using Topre Realforce Fullsize Keyboard for more than 5 years at an office environment.

Cherry MX blacks, double-shot ABS, and o-rings work well for me in the office environment.

What is the brand of that mechanical keyboard?

I have the following mechanical keyboards:

1. Ducky Shine Zero (Full size and brown-switches) for Malaysian PC
2. Filco Majestouch (Full size and brown-switches) for dad's PC
3. Ducky Shine something (Full size and brown-switches) for home workstation
4. Coolermaster Quickfire Pro (Full size and brown-switches) for home entertainment system
5. Topre Realforce (Full size) for office setup

Previously, I also owned a Filco Majestouch (Full size and red-switches) for gaming but decided to go with the brown switches version.

Topre is not exactly new.

I have been using Topre Realforce keyboard (at my office) for more than 5 years now.

Topre is for the elite
*
What do you mean by the elite?

I don't like Topre for gaming but enjoy the use of Topre for typing.

I continue to use regular Cherry brown mechanical keyboard for gaming (I have 4 of them, two in Malaysia, two in Indonesia).

Aye, am using a Cherry brown for gaming and patiently await a backlit TKL Topre to be added, for work purposes. Typing on a Topre is just so orgasmic
*
Typing on Topre keyboard is definitely a very pleasant experience and also quieter than the cherry mx keyboards.

bought my first mechanical keyboard, ducky one mx red. So far so good. Need to get use to the linear feel as i still bottoming it out most of the time.
*
My first mechanical keyboard were Filco Majestouch fullsize cherry brown and cherry red, respectively.

Sold away the cherry red. I felt cherry red was good for gaming but not so much for typing and I enjoy cherry brown and went with it since then.

I too, started with mx red and for a brief time, mx blue but have since settled down with mx brown. Just waiting to get a backlit topre now
*
There is a backlit topre? That is interesting.

I didn't know about that.

Most people can't use my Realforce Topre keyboard at work because they cant' see the alphabets as the alphabets are almost invisible (same colour as the keys).

Black font on charcoal gray are hard to see. So, mostly limited to touch type users to use these blank/charcoal gray Topre keyboards.
*
That is exactly right. I managed to find a few photos of my Topre Realforce full size keyboard:

I am looking for wireless mechanical keyboard. It doesn't have to be full-size.

Preferably cherry brown switches.

hmm.. look like i made a wrong choice. should have go for mx brown, this mkb is intended for office use. lol

i managed to find one mx brown keyboard at the shop last weekend and spent some time with it.
i like it more actually compared to red for typing now. dont know why did not feel the same back then.. felt like red is good for fps only now, even with fps, sometimes i did not know i have lifted too much and the key stop registered, no feedback. Get annoyed when my character suddenly stop moving/sprinting halfway.

now my next mkb for my fps gaming purpose, look at corsair strafe, brown or red? hmmmmm...
*
Go with cherry mx brown.

Sell away the red, after you are comfortable with brown.

Hello sifus, I am looking for recommendations for a MKB for both gaming and typing as I am new to this. Anything in particular that I should look out for? Thank you.
*
Suggest you try out the mechanical keyboards with different switches prior to purchasing.

Also, some research on the different cherry mx keys would help but nothing beats trying the switches yourself.

Budget is RM 500. (Is it possible to get one with PBT keycaps or how much does it cost to replace them?)
Full layout. (Not TKL or 60%)
No need for LED lighting.

@kianweic : Thanks, I will take your advice and try out the different switches.

@richard912 : I was told by a friend that one can get addicted to the clicky sound, so I am not sure of what I like. My work environment does not require silence.
*
There should be plenty of choices for RM500 budget.

In case your office / work station is not at the same location as your game station (ie. at home), you probably should consider getting two mechanical keybaords (which I did, well for my case, i have 5 mechanical keyboards).

okay.. thanks for the advice. will definitely go for mx brown in my next purchase. i tot my first mkb will stay with me for at least 5 yrs lol
manatau regretted so fast.. bangwall.gif

my last kb, cheap lousytech rm30 kb lasted me 7 years before i decided to replace her.. WASD still working perfectly eventho i play bf3 and csgo with her frequently..  haha
*
My cheap Logitech keyboard lasted more than 6 years. However, after trying out mechanical keyboards, I will avoid using membrane keyboards whenever possible.

I am now considering to replace my wireless membrame keyboard with a cherry mx brown equivalent.

How do you use this without Control ("Ctrl") key?

Just curious.
