QUOTE(earl-ku @ Mar 21 2008, 04:46 PM) u only get the 8900 if u wan the HF band ... or else stay with the 8800, but both has got the cross band repeat ... the 7800 ... so far haven seen anyone using it yet ... Correction: 8900r HF is a N-FM, there arent any activity on FM mode HF in Malaysia. All HF in Malaysia are Single Side Band aka SSB.

Yes Joe I am mainly active on the 20m band. Earl thats correct, I would however choose the 8800r as the extra cash is not needed for an inactive FM 6m. I am happy that the younger generation here have an interest in legacy analogue system of the Ham spirit. Earl have fanned a good group here and please continue. Us old farts are learning the cyberspace.

I will remain annonymous for now on callsign. Dont want to be drag into the 9Ms and 9Ws battles like other forums. I however would visit here from time to time to help you guys and gals out on rigs and so forth. Please do sit for the RAE, its relatively easy on basic electronics and SOP. The time is right now, for MCMC might eventually remove the CW exam once the old hams and elmers agrees. Then 9Ws would be allowed into all bands.

QUOTE(mitodna @ Apr 12 2008, 10:31 PM) hi, the apply callsign form can be downloaded from MCMC , right? thanks is it from http://www.skmm.gov.my/mcmc/what_we_do/spe...us/form_app.asp ? so I really need a radio before apply a call sign? Yes thats the AA form to get the callsign after passing the exam. The requirements are a weird as 1. You are not allowed to purchase any radio without license but to get a license you need to tell them what radio you have. 2. You are not allowed to go onair without license but to get a license you need to get 2 9Ms signiture stating you are competent onair.

QUOTE(earl-ku @ Apr 13 2008, 03:58 PM) Thats why u have pre-amateur radio clubs ... u get to use their so-called aa to buy ur radio ... but u would normally buy the radio then join ... then u tx on that freq only la ... hahaha - thats a good point .. Again there is a BIG loop hole in joining commercial clubs To join Radio Clubs their frequencies are in the commercial bands and you have to buy a Amateur Radio then mod it to transmit out of Ham Band Frequencies thus run foul with MCMC rulling.

8800 8900 are dual monitor rigs, 8800 have a slight edge due to memory management independently. FTM10R good for in-car use especially at night where the 8800 and 8900 fails miserably. As base units take the 8800.

8800/8900 only lights up the LCD and none on the buttons. Given that some quick settings can be accessed thru the (Maroon color lighted) DTMF mic. But when there is a need to access the front panel, no can do, worse if the right side radio is configured as "KEY 2". And the fact Yaesu TradeMark Omni Glow LCD is wonderful but someone gone bonkers and outsource the manufacturing of the DTMF mic to china and its lighted up pinkish maroon led.

Yeah thats the difference between Icom and Yaesu. My take have always been that Icom are built by real users/engineers, function over form. After more than a decade brand loyal to Yaesu, I might have to jump ship if Yaesu keeps letting their marketing/accountants decide their product line.

Technically its not too bad. Just read up on Ohm's law and especially the part on Resonance RLC. Basic electric/electronics is quite ok with just one formula that you play around with. v=ir

Exact price I cant recall. I bought with 2 more rigs but roughly its 1.3k for the set + 400 for the accessories like antenna, charger, mic and cable.. all original.
Scanning freq generally all ham radio can scan. For VHF the rx can be as low as 134 and high as 174. For sets like Vx7 or equalvalent its 0.5 to 999mhz. Full range scanning from HF (FM) till UHF.

hahah anyway back to topic. For ease of simplex, a good antenna like a home made J-pole for RM50 would do wonders with a cheap china mali VHF handset. 5w is all you ever need with a base antenna to another base antenna. Good pirates would be good ham operators in the end.

Earl let me think about the price a bit more. Readily available slimjim I believe are ham area 144-146 with center at 145 ? Can it be adjusted? You want to try a homebrew? You can get SWR1:1 on your 143 commercial downlink. You are legal on that Freq. 15w from rig would be 15w on antenna. With SWR1:1.5, you get 15w from rig.. antenna only 7-8w This post has been edited by santacruzer: Aug 8 2008, 12:43 AM
