Guys, a quick question. How do you gauge the correct Reference Level of an AV system?
*
you mean to balance all speakers output? or to judge if ur 0db = 85db?

that means with SPL meter, we play a pink noise and adjust the volume in order to reach 85db SPL level (without sub) and the volume shown at the AVR would be our Reference Level?

this means regardless of encoding of the movie is louder or softer than others, this is regarded as the volume intended by the director?
*
what i normal do after audyssey is to get a SPL meter (c weighted) (i am using my phone). Put it at MLP, run test tone put the vol to 75 and check speakers volume.. each speakers (except subwoofer) should return around 75db in ur phone.. do minor adjustment to those speaker which are not matching.. but becareful sometime the place ur stand acting as reflection that makes the reading inaccurate.

i do that with Umik but i find that doing volume matching has very low tolerance to sitting position. the moment i move slightly off from the sweet spot, the effect can really be felt. after trying out a few setting, i prefer to let the Dirac handle SPL matching. i usually watch with my family so i prefer a wider sweet spot.

as for the Reference Level, the reason that i am asking is because a lot of ppl tells me that Reference Level means 0 at the volume control. this is confusing as 83db sensitivity speaker would not give the same SPL as a 96db sensitivity speaker at 0 volume. thats why i would like to know how you guys determine the Reference Level of your system..
*

did you run dirac after you change the speaker? does the measurement / vol correction drop after you change from a 83db speaker to 96 db speaker?

the variable that i can think of here is the power.. we need to ensure that the amp/avr is driving at the correct power (watt) for different set of speaker to make it reference at 0 db.

Another side not on sensitivity is like the max speed/fuel consumption of the car.. manufacturer tends to have a number that consumer may or may not reach.. for 83db vs 96 db some use pink noise to test some just take a single freq where the speaker perform best for the lab testing.. i just use it for reference but i dont 100% trust on these numbers...

the moment i move slightly off from the sweet spot, the effect can really be felt.
what kind of effect? i tends to feel the same when i move out of the spot i tends to get more bass or more treble from certain speaker.. when i sit back to MLP.. it all balance out.. its challenging to have multiple MLP.. i will let other shifu to comment on that kind of setup sweat.gif

the Dirac always use a single speaker as the reference point and the gain +/- will offset each speaker to this reference point. i always thought the reference point speaker would be calibrated to match the AVR volume control after running Dirac but it did not. after changing all the speakers to ATC, the volume is lower even after running Dirac.

the variable that i can think of here is the power.. we need to ensure that the amp/avr is driving at the correct power (watt) for different set of speaker to make it reference at 0 db.
This is true but if use external power amp, the loudness is determine by the Watt, Input sensitivity and Gain. My Arcam RCA output has very low voltage therefore i need a high gain power amp to achieve the the desired SPL.
*
Atc b&w tannoy are brands that know which always hungry for power. I m not surprised. The HK hifi YouTube channel that I watched found out that even gryphon also insuffice to drive his atc. I am not sure what is ur exact setup but could it be possible that ur amp is already working at its max to drive these speakers?

instead of full manual tuning setup. i use audyssey to find the room situation. then i move all speaker position to compensate 1st result.

i run audyssey again (repeat above all) until i get a least correction result. final touch is a bit only.
like source db, reference offset according to own taste.

Isn’t it easier to distance delay in your processor rather than moving the physical speaker
*
i think he has the room.. distance delay is when we cannot place the speaker in the very ideal situation due to room layout or bad MLP positioning then we have no choice but to allow the computer to make the necessary adjustment.. if he physically can adjust the speaker the computer has less adjustment to made

My parents needs them, due to local channel...hahaha, cant run away from Astro.

I had Astro plugged into DVD HDMI port, but denon didnt like the RC code starting with 0...so had to move it to Aux2 to key in the code, yet it doesnt recognize

Next let me see if I could setup UnifiTV as well...hahaha

BTW, do you use a fan for your receiver? Mine gets as high as 60C at high volume

i am using a fan for my avr.. it gets hot.. normal for denon laugh.gif

https://denon.custhelp.com/app/answers/deta...ooth-headphones

and all the shifus are correct, Bluetooth from PC or AVR doesnt make differences unless there's a differences in the codec transmission. For example if your AVR support for LDAC/APTX HD and your computer doesnt then it makes differences.. provided your headset supports those high res format.

Having said if the codec is the same it doesnt make the differences if ur bluetooth is coming from PC or AVR the audio quality doesn't change

hi guys,
thanks for all the feedbacks..

i am actually looking for something like this

Or is it advisable to go for 2 floor stand speakers only pair with av receiver?

My main interest is actually to play movies, not too much on audiophiles music.. Yes i do watch a lot of action movies, but preferably if no choice i have to use headphones at times for late night watching (while children is sleeping biggrin.gif)

what is ur plan? are you going to expand your set to 5.1/atmos in future? If yes then you can start with AVR + front speaker (bookshelf if you are on budget). Then next you can buy floor stander + center and demote ur bookshelf to rear satellite. No wastage.

guys, just want to ask..if i put my speakers on console table, i feels its too low.. but there is not enough space beside the table for me to put stand..is there any way i can alleviate the speakers on my console table?
*
another option is to toe the front to raise the angle.. put some books/magazine underneath the front of speaker to see if that will do the trick before you actually invest on the stand. if the front toe angle is acceptable for you then you can start looking for rubber feet to lift the front angle. That will also work for cheap solution. Of cos haven proper stand / isolation would be the best

Thats correct, from May 15th onwards the product is available globally free but not sure in MY. Maybe owners need to contact their resellers to get one?

Hi all sifus... I wish to get some advice from the experienced owners here..

I initially went to Stylelazer looking for a 5.1.2 atmos package with a budget of RM5k, what they recommended was this

https://www.stylelaser.com.my/product/denon...heatre-package/

After demo, i don't think the combo sounded good at all, particularly the highs are too "strong/piercing".

A friend told me it may due to no calibration b4 the demo... Now I hesitates to spend RM6.5k gambling on it'll sound good after calibration...

Also is my budget of RM5k too little for a 5.1.2 Atmos package? Will it sound much much better if i spend the same budget on a branded 2.1 instead?
*
listening environment plays a big deal also. if your actual room is full of reflective wall or furniture most likely ur high and low will be tamed.
this is the challenge you are going to deal with. did you ask the shop why it sounded that way? was the speaker toe in?
For the calibration also, unless they just swap the speaker in else normally they will calibrate first before demo.

I dont own Jamo i cant comment much.. Jamo can be a good starting point as compare to those unbranded speakers. Style laser do carries other brand of speaker also maybe check with them and see if u can test other speaker under similar setup.

In Denon setup there's a Cinema EQ which you can enable it to soften the high for easier movie conversation listening.

yes.. a decent entry sub will cost >RM3k.. if u look for quality - start from minimum and build along ur way

Wow thank u all for ur kind advice~ Very appreciate it~  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif
The set will be in my living room, left side is curtain, right side is dining area, so i think reflection is not an issue
I see, maybe Jamo sound are usually like this then. But according to the shop, the guy told me it's due to Denon amp, if use Marantz amp will sound better  doh.gif
Yea... I tried some soundbars at multiple electrical stores, they all dun sound good, even the RM7.5k Sonos + Sonos sub do not sound as good as my Proton car speaker, that's really weird.. Now I'm willing to go 2.0 or 2.1 haha..

Yesterday I found this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4rSdFeAQwc (sorry chinese speaking only, haven't found any english speaking reviewer going as technical as this guy)
He seems to know a lot about audio and he also sells them in package here (maybe Taiwan only) https://shop.ningselect.com/cat/n/ningstereo/

For newbies, he suggested LA Audio https://shopee.com.my/LA-Audio-M2-Hybrid-in...9332.7905674132 + Castle Knight 1 speakers https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r....bucket=5#detail, total around RM4k, have anyone heard good things about these 2 brands? Or do u have any other recommendation?

I think I won't go used since I'm unable to judge whether the set is in good condition or not, safer to go new with warranty..
My hse ceiling will be flat and 10 ft after plastering, I'm also willing to do ceiling speakers, but too bad their suggestion sounded quite bad to me, even my gf who isn't particular on audio things doesn't like it, so we were quite disappointed at what they sound like for a RM7k product... For now, i think i'll just go with 2.0 or 2.1 if needed, but wishes to get some recommendation...

Because audio is almost like rocket science to me... You can't choose the amp/speakers based on spec or price..
Amp with low spec can sounds good too (the LA Audio amp above only puts out 18w), speaker with higher price does not always mean it'll sound good, there's also amp like NAD 3020i which is legendary (i think, have dug deep into it yet), selling at only around RM700... Plus there are TONNES of brands, whether you ever heard of it or not, they all have products that sound good... Rocket science  cry.gif  cry.gif
*
that Taiwanese is B&W and Accuphase kaki.. but he is more to music rather than home theater..

The set will be in my living room, left side is curtain, right side is dining area, so i think reflection is not an issue <-- same layout as mine and it does means that you do not have a proper listening area. assuming you are sitting in the middle of the room. TV placing at front wall and you are having rear wall.. those wall are going to reflect your sound. And your ceiling also.. if you place ur left front close to the curtain corner you will then found left speaker is more bloomy than right speaker

the question for you is whether u want to settle down with 2.0/2.1 OR you start with 2.0/2.1 and work your way up. if you are really into HT (surround channel) your 2.0 / 2.1 should start with AVR not stereo amp.

soundbar is still limited by the way it works. no matter how expensive it is, it cant fit it large driver and often tune equalizer with V shape setup to impress consumer.
