Because lego malaysia suka2 put their price, example LEGO Nexo Knights Jestro's Evil Mobile (70316).
Retail price in US is $59.99 but retail in Malaysia is only Rm249.90 which is cheaper/almost the same price with us counter part.
But for Ninjago bike chase set and Batman bike chase set, both retail at 19.99 at us.. but in malaysia, Ninjago set only rm99.90 but the batman one is rm119.90

Yes 59.99, not sure how come malaysia price suka hati one, probably base on popularity of the set. Lego malaysia also scalper lol

in term of currency exchange rate we already lost. isn't Lego price is globalize, why ours are more expensive after conversion compare with other countries? who decide the price factor here, Lego International or our own Lego Store? Malaysian always at the losing end, sigh.
If I had to take a guess, I would say that the local distributor ALJ Sdn Bhd has either been upping the prices based on the currency exchange (then not dropping it when the currency drops just like every other local business in this country) and that the Lego Group subsidiary Lego Trading (M) Sdn Bhd is just bringing in the products.
I would also tend to believe that the prices in this country does not constantly match the currency exchange prices, or the prices stated on Lego.com (with allowances for shipping, currency exchange and whatever else). Once it goes up, it never goes down. We don't have sales like most Lego stores (because all we have are Lego Certified Stores) and until something is done with the way Lego is managed in this country you will continue to see LCS selling new products to their best friends in bulk, while the casual buyer who visits these outlets find nothing they want in newly released sets. And that they are just whacking the price for specific sets based on probability of popularity. They know that they way they run things, that the stock will always be sold out so whatever price doesn't really matter. They can raise it by 10%, 20% and still it'll be sold out in retail outlets. LLM is a good example, look at how they restock, and how the same people buy everything out in minutes and then sell it for hundreds more to idiots like us here. And we buy it, and even make orders with these people. Why would they stop? If I can sell something for 100-200 more each unit, and I can buy 8-10 units a day, that's a perfect job for me.
The local distributors use to stock the normal toy stores around, but they have now limited the stock and most everything only goes to the LCS now. And although LCS still charges retail (their padded version of it), the normal toy stores out there have started to change prices accordingly to stock availability, etc. So even if something is in print, the price goes up depending on how hard it is to find (when it could be easily available in any other country). Then you can think about the scalpers that are still operating (who are also some of the toy stores), and the stupid people who buy from them instead of being patient and waiting. Let people get away with crap, and things get worse. Malaysia BOLEH! Guess things are going to continue to run like this. No need to compare to other Asian countries and say it's more expensive there because everything in Asia runs like this, you see massive differences between first world and our world.
GBHQ was a good example, RM300+ more than what they were selling in the US and I can understand shipping. But put all the stock together shipped over, it's not going to cost that much even with shipping so that's something to ponder about. Another head scratcher is the Bat Cave, RM400 more than what it is in the US and again I don't think it's costing them even half of that being shipped over. Not when you take into account the amount of stock that comes in each shipment (bulk).
One good lesson I've learnt is when I visited the US a few weeks ago, several Lego Stores had most of what we seem to fight for over here. Nobody even cares because there's so many sets available over there. And if they don't have it, they know it'll be there the next restock. Prices are as per the Lego.com prices, and they even have sales for specific sets. During Christmas, etc I hear the sales are way higher, with all those seasonal sets being given free. All we get are the ridiculously crappy new year animals once a year. Not to mention the VIP scheme, you buy more, the price discounts you get are ridiculous. Saves you a lot of cash and the way most people in this thread buy Lego, you'd be saving thousands as you buy. But then there's the bad thing about that, Americans are now smarter. They know that we struggle to get stuff, so they buy from their Lego stores, put it up on Ebay for the same inflatable prices and we buy it happily. Everything free that they receive, the put up on ebay for $15-40 and we buy it! A shipment of Slave 1 (40 units) was restocked at one of the Lego stores I was at that week on Tuesday, by Thursday night it was down to 1 unit. 2/3 of that probably ended up on Bricklink/ebay for us to buy.
So yeah, blame LLM, blame LCS and blame LEGO, blame scalpers and definitely blame the LUGs (they also allow this to happen and do it themselves) and the sales threads out there. But also blame yourself. If we were smarter in our approach to obtain Lego, we wouldn't be in this mess.
Most of you say you're giving up the hobby? I'm just going to buy from the US whenever I go there and stay selective like I've been so far.
