IMHO, MX2 is much better now. I've yet to really compare the temps between MX1 n MX2 but the ease of application is so much better now. It's more liquid. Also when u remove the heatsinks as often as I do, u'll really appreciate how easy it is to lift the heatsink off the CPU.

Last time AS5 will stick to the heatsink like superglue n practically yank out the whole socket while pulling off the heatsink. MX1 was better than AS5 in that respect, easier to pull off the heatsink but still difficult. With MX2, the heatsink just comes off easily. That's sumthin we dont read about in TIM reviews. LOL. They oni concentrate on pure performance but no feedback on ease of use.
*
I obeserved that too for heasink usage. Seems the enhanced airflow tends to cause the fluid to dry out very fast post curing period. However those on water-cooling don't really have that problem. Been using AS5 for 8 years and all I needed to do was to twist a bit the water block to unsettle the TIM

to be precise, it's thermal adhesive. once u attach it, u will be having hard time removing it.

it's better then the so call 'double side tape'
Thermal Adhesive is thermal glue, not tape smile.gif

it depand on what kind of the Tim u used. some TIM which have metal substance in it will have potential to leak
into yr mobo if u apply too much, which u will end up RMA yr mobo rclxub.gif

and your processor as well if there's a gap between the substrate and the die smile.gif

What is the market price of Arctic Cooling MX-1 and Arctic Cooling MX-2?... The shop quoted me RM35 for MX-1 and RM42 for MX-2 ... Is it overpriced?

What's the proper way to apply TIM

Thermalright instructs to apply a thin layer of TIM to both the CPU and heatsink base
MX-2 instructs to apply a small dot of TIM to the middle of the CPU
Arctic Silver instructs to apply a thin line to the middle of the CPU

So which one to follow?

You don't have to follow according to the instructions... For me.. I spread the TIM throughout the CPU evenly and as thin as possible... So thin that it looks like that part isn't covered with TIM but it is... Don't apply on both CPU and heatsink... CPU is enough... Btw how much is MX-2 you bought? I ask a shop about it they say its RM42...

Basically neither one make too much of difference ..

I used to apply a thin layer .. but realized that it's possible with Artic Silver but not on MX-1 //

so when I started to use MX-1 I just drop a tip at the center of HIS then mount the heatsink..

Some LYN forummers here are selling them as well. U can do a search on MX-2 under the Trade Zone section.

Because MX-1 just not as liquid as AS5.... so can't spread evently, it would just stick to the what ever being used to spread it even..

another thing to add to methods of applying TIM. After applying a "grain of rice" amount to the middle of your cpu, and after your heatsink gets in touch/contact with it. Do not remove it again. Quickly fasten/lock your heatsink in place, and jiggle it gently left and right so that the TIM gets spreads WITHIN your proc and hsf.

i tried both using AS5...

first the spread across method (damn messy sweat.gif ), using what cooler ah that time hmm.gif can't remember...

anyway after 2 month try the grain of rice technique, the temp drop but not much la laugh.gif

for me grain of rice technique is better, not messy when removing the hsf compared to spread across method user posted image
