I would like to rip files from DVD into Xvid or DivX or maybe h.264. Can anyone recommend me a software for these? Thanks, don't really mind if it troublesome as long as the quality is good.

PS, is it possible to get quality like those ripped by the scenes?

Hi, I'm planning to rip my DVD collections and save all in my comp. What I want to do is to create a backup with smaller size but preserving the DVD quality. I decided to use mkv container with original ac3 and dts audio from dvd and also .srt subtitle (subripped from DVD).

The problem now is the video encoding setting. I'm planning to use x264 format but don't know what is the best setting for encoding. I prefer to use megui, but don't know which profile setting is the best? Anyone can recommend me?

What bit rate should I use?

You can try the HQ-slower profile, should be Dxva compatible.
bitrate 2000kbps, if the encoded files turns out bigger than expected, lower it abit eg 1800 or 1500kbps.
other settings already optimal so not need to tweak anymore.

There is no best settings, you will get the same answer if you post a question on doom9 tongue.gif

Yeah, I also had read some posting in Doom9 and other forum.

Actually, I only hope to start experimenting the setting based on others experience. I want to know which is the "usual" setting they use when encoding the video?

BTW, thank you for your suggestion. So far I already tried HD-HQ (new profile) and also some other profile.

One more question, it is normal to take 4~5 hours to encode 2 hours dvd to h264?

No need to follow them. do trial and error
and the bitrate calculator is there for a reason

for the encoding part, yes its normal. H264 takes up a lot of encoding time. With more quality settings entered (aggressive settings) the slower it will get

I just finished experimenting the best bit rate for my DVD backup.

First I cut the video into 1 minute video and try encoding using several bit rate (1000 ~ 4000). Insane profile is really give insane encoding time but I don't like the result. So, I only tried with HD-HQ profile and play a bit.

IMHO, the best is 2000 kbps. The file size is half of the original but has equal quality with the original. Anything higher give smoother, nicer and better than original dvd video but also yield bigger file size. Anything lower give smaller file size but lower image quality.

But encoding time really trouble me. sweat.gif For 1h45m video, it took almost 7 hours to encode. So, one night I can backup only 1 DVD. doh.gif doh.gif

I cant find HD-HQ profile for x264 on megui >_>
btw, HQ-insane isnt the slowest, it just using 16 reference frame(slow as hell already but better compression).
the Motion estimation algorithm still using multihex,
there are 2 are the slowest, ESA and SATD ESA, which may give you <1fps encoding speed brows.gif
