Hey guys i have a question that has been bothering me for a while now. Why does the coffee to water ration differ between brew methods?

For example, a french press might use 1:10 coffee to water ratio while filter tends to be 1:16 and espresso 1:2. Why is that? Isn't there a sweet spot for extraction, around 20%? And is the caffeine content in all the methods the same, assuming the same amount of ground is used?
*
Very good question!! you can call it the sweet spot of extraction for each different method is different in terms of variables (Pressure or gravity or manual brewing) also do remember the grind size as well. different method brings out different characteristic of the coffee.

Hope it helps but i don't think i help? rclxs0.gif anyway just enjoy coffee the way you like it!! drool.gif i always like to taste what the roaster taste notes are!! and thats my indication of how good a roaster is in duplicating each bag of beans! rclxm9.gif

Ahhh Great info pat!! Thanks!! rclxm9.gif

@d33 Ouch that would be sucky!! Try using a cotton butt soaked with some dissolve solution like turpentine and try to "unlock" it? (I don't know if its safe to use it on copper or your water line, coz its kinda strong and toxic) anyway just a 2 cents. hope you found a solution!!

Correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't grind size, pressure and temperature affect extraction while water to coffee ratio affects the strength?

And yeah i know i should just do whatever taste the best to me but i am really curious about the science behind it all.
The problem with that comparison in the link is that it doesn't state the amount of ground coffee used. I am more interested to know if different brew methods contain the same amount of caffeine if the same amount of grounds are used.
*
yes in fact grind size, pressure, temperature and water ratio is in relation to the strength and caffeine in the cup, and ofcoz the time infused as well (Eg: Espresso 25-30sec, pour overs 2.30 - 3 mins, cold brew 24h). But coffee roasters play an important role as well to give the coffee beans the exact characteristic of the coffee to shine and makes us appreciate every bean from the farmers to the brewers!!

some coffee roaster whom operates cafes as well is something i find interesting they can roast the beans profile matching their high end pressure profiling machine to the "Sweet spot" which i find it hard to replicate at home!! drool.gif drool.gif and that something i would pay for a cup of joe (Extraordinary joe)

What is your question again ?
both had its goods and bad....i would choose mignon over sette after much consideration....
Yeah, sette is good, digital, direct to portafilter without wastage and fast..... but the grind is not as fine as mignon....programmable timer ? I can live it .... once set, then all done, you wont need them anymore unless you constantly change beans same goes for the dail, Clump from the grind, hmm what machine doesn't clump ..... fast, well im not doing any coffee bar or shop.... i love taking my time making a cup of coffee i love  hmm.gif

but my consideration might not be agree by some...  biggrin.gif
*
i agree too the timer and weight is not important for me as long as i have consistency!! we are all "home barista" anyway plenty of time to make quality coffee. but bases on some reviews they mention its finest is comparable with the mignon!!! and that is what interest me!! LOL

What's the preoccupation with fineness? Once the grinder can reach the level of choking the espresso machine, is there any need to go even finer? Doing turkish?

The thing I like with conicals are the effectively-zero retention.  For home use (just a few shots a day) this is a concern to me.
*
yes precisely thats what i heard/read the sette is able to choke a prosumer machine!! but i think it depends on beans too and the temp and humidity of your brew area!! but take it with a pinch of stale beans!! tongue.gif till we personally test it out side by side to decide!!

till then just wait for it to be officially available then I'm sure there is more reviews coming up!

and i just found a really good deal via mudah! if any of you looking for a decent espresso machine!

ps: i have no connection or affiliation with the seller! just sharing good deals!! smile.gif

I think the price is reasonable.... if you do 1 to 1 conversion is it about close to 2k......

one must not forget.... the person who sell you also want to gain profit..... plus order in taxation is not like it used to be, everything now will be charge for high price.... example taken from my friend order his watch overseas last few weeks back and got heavy tax as well.... just for rm500 watch other country price but cost him up to rm900 watch when reaches our shore to his hand....
*
What!! Watches are tax free items ofcoz its subjected to GST!! hmmm change of rules? idk!!

i think sette at rm2k is reasonable la!! still cheaper than vario! tongue.gif

I searched a bit on taobao, don't read chinese so I'm entirely dependent on chrome's auto translate biggrin.gif From what I can tell them RM5-6 double wall glasses aren't original Bodum, they're not even advertised as Bodum, just double walled glasses. The Bodum advertised ones are a bit more expensive roughly 17RMB and higher but still half the price of what you'd get here. Maybe @luvox can give more details.

I'm tempted to get several as well biggrin.gif
*
Hahaha Same i don't know how to read chinese too!! consider me banana! LOL hence i ask for link!

QUOTE(luvox @ Jul 12 2016, 08:05 AM)
Rm5 is old price d, 1 year back. The cheapest is around rm7. Not include shipment fees to malaysia. I use sea freight, it is volumetric rate, consider negligible for small item. Cheap one doesnt come with boxes, consider factory rejected items due to unnotice small defect, unless ur eyes go very close to the glass. Original bodum printing at bottom. There is more expensive available come with ori box, price still way cheaper than local price

Haha I certainly had my answer in terms of price and convenience, but I guess I was asking more in terms of reliability, consistency, taste. I have not used Breville or drink anything made with Breville, so asking to see if anyone has good/bad reviews on it. Appreciate your thoughts though  biggrin.gif
*
in terms or reliability and consistency! what is your expected ROI? 3 years i think Breville will do fine (If I'm not mistaken Harvey norman do extended warranty for it too? not too sure) but don't expect it to last as long other separate "entry/Prosumer" machines if it last then its a BONUS!! brows.gif

Taste wise its very subjective but trust me you will definitely get better taste of espresso than starbucks at a cheaper price!! rclxms.gif Heck even aeropress is better! tongue.gif

There are a few used machines around do scout mudah.com as well i posted it before and i suppose its already snapped up!!

or Get a Aeropress or V60 at a budget if you just drink long black. or if u want hands on manual Espresso maker i have a ROK for sale!! biggrin.gif

Harvey Norman sells this Breville for RM3.6k, even with promo RM2,999 but need to purchase warranty forRM500/600 for 4 years.

Other place only cost RM3k 1 year warranty....  big big difference.

Looking at  La Pavoni Professional Espresso Machine with Base by d33pbluez.. which i think will last but i read it needs high maintenance.. hahhaa  hmm.gif
*
Heck add RM500 for 4 years warranty? i would do that its a good buy then IMHO!!! BTW all electronic espresso machine needs some sort of maintenance to keep it in tip top condition!! basic like back flushes & descaling depends on the frequency of usage is a must. its rarely u need to take it apart unless something is wrong with it. or if u have 4 years warranty just send it back!! rclxm9.gif

La pavoni lever machine i suppose u were referring to? i find the quoted price from malaysia distributor is a little expensive compared to buying it overseas. IDK but i read that its tax free for it, except u need to pay 6% GST which i think its still cheaper base on what i research not too long ago.

QUOTE(alvint89 @ Jul 13 2016, 10:39 AM)
Thanks for all your reply guys. I don't drink long black so much; prefer milk based smile.gif but trying to learn to drink black coffee as well. I guess it's obvious from my questions that I don't know what I'm doing yet, so would prefer to send in for services instead of DIY.

Thanks bro kuluuluk for the info on the warranty. Something to think about.
*
Milk base coffee drink? aeropress and V60 also can do it!! brows.gif u just need to heat up the milk. and add into the coffee. drool.gif if u wanna practice steaming milk with steam then Bellman CP-25 is your answer!! which I'm also selling!! tongue.gif

Once you tasted fresh brewed coffee you will never pay RM10-15 outside just for your caffeine fix!! unless its an independent caffe and experience barista whom knows what he's doing for a meeting or catch up with friends.

I had my eyes on the BES870 when it won Best New Product—Coffee or Tea Preparation and Serving Equipment (Consumer) back in SCAA 2013.
However, after consulting with a few experts in the field from Coffex and Dankoff, they did not recommend it for long term usage -> its always a bad idea to bundle the grinder with the espresso machine itself as the heat generated will not be good for the beans. I took their advice and went for a more recommended BES920, the Dual Boiler.

Been using it for 2 years now, it’s quite reliable, hasn’t let me down yet. Quality of the drink wise from the Breville machine, it tastes excellent, provided you use only fresh beans, fresh milk, and make sure you maintain your machine properly (flush/backflush thing), cleaning the machine, change filter (if required).

If you’re not much of a heavy drinker like me, I weight and put only sufficient beans into the grinder each time, and clear out any remaining beans/grinds every time, I think, the heat from the espresso machine should not affect the beans much, since you will only be using fresh beans, and not leaving the beans there overtime to be heated and reheated by the espresso machine.
*
Totally agree with castreal!!!! but 4 years warranty!! rclxm9.gif

BES920 is a good machine!! Good choice!! and its true on the heat generated from a 2in1 machine!! didn't really consider it as a problem!! great that u pointed it out!!

i also do single dosing each time!! well most "home barista" do that anyway!!

hi guys, need to ask some basic questions....

1. The coffee bean, is it ok if i fill up the top storage area of the grinder?

2. Is that ok if i grind say 10 cups of coffee bean in a go? If yes i just need to store it in a  air tight container?

is there any website that teach the basic info on making good coffee?

** I have a delonghi kg89 grinder
*
1. Yes. if you use up the beans within 2 weeks.

2. not recommended if you plan to store grinds. because grinds stale faster than beans. yes even with air tight container.

3. google is your best friend or even youtube, forum i usually go to homebarista.com for some tips and advice.

depends whats your definition of good coffee and how you brew it/type of coffee you usually drink. Espresso or long black

have fun exploring and enjoy good coffee.

@d33 Beautiful mod!! Welldone and glad your enjoying brewing again!! but 1Q isn't it the same boiler? how do you cut short the steam time?

my kitchen top has limited space, that's why i plan to grind it in one go and keep it in storage, otherwise keep kena complain biggrin.gif
*
or on the other hand you might complain to coffee roasters that their beans/coffee taste so stale/bad. biggrin.gif

in that case its cheaper to get powered coffee from retailers, like "aik cheong" "nescafe" etc. no point wasting beans that you find "average" / no difference from kopitiam coffee.

just my 2 cents. icon_rolleyes.gif

I've just started roasting with a popper, so I'm not confident enough to roast for you. As such, it will have to be green beans for now.

If I can get consistent roasts (probably after I hack the popper with a PID, temperature probes, airflow control, etc) I'll get back to you.

I must say that roasting coffee is an amazingly fun process... very sensory (sight, sound, smells), fast & involved (absolutely CANNOT take your eyes off during the entire process!!) and you get absolutely FRESH coffee!! I have NEVER seen so much crema!

.... and did I mention ECONOMICAL? The popper will pay itself off in two months or less, based on my current consumption level.

Strongly recommend everyone to try this out!!
*
thumbup.gif notworthy.gif good start!! you are on the way to become a pro!! for me i stay in a condo so can't afford to roast as i heard the coffee smoke will ring the smoke alarm!! sweat.gif do let us know once you are ready to make some profit from your special blend!! smile.gif

And yes fresh coffee always have thick crema but i do notice after 3-5 days or so its the best cup ever i can say its the peak of the beans and the flavour gets bold!!

QUOTE(d33pbluez @ Jul 21 2016, 05:37 PM)
Thanks. But still there is a few more touch up to be done like covering back the knob hole and some paint job since there is scratch mark on the cover. I'm imagine if i can put this kind of art beside my machine, it would be awesome.

Same boiler but different internal parts build (Namely, Piston & Body, i believe is the opening of the internal part would be a bit larger space when lever are push to back). i ran a bench mark test with youtube video vs my actual brew time... not sure how accurate it is...  biggrin.gif but definitely it feel quite fast....

But i still paranoid about the hissing sound made when the boiler is heating up.... feel like something is leaking inside or could it be the hissing sound coming from anti vacuum release vapor that turn into water touching the anti vacuum hot body.... Anyway im still waiting for my pressure gauge to measure the opv .... guess i had to wait for 2 more weeks.
*
hmmm on the hissing sound is it long hiss? as it should be hiss (1-2sec) then the valve will be closed/locked. and there shouldn't be any vapour? unless its really close to the boiling water which the valve maybe touching the water which it shouldn't. anyway I'm not too sure as I've not mod it before, just base on my own analogy. because "hiss" happens when the pressure is going up then it should lock.
