 I'm Fikri. Nice to meet all of you!Last 2 weeks I've decided to come out to my mom via a phone call. Prior to the phone call I've been avoiding calling her for months because I promised myself the next time I called her I will tell her that I'm gay but I never had the courage to do so. During the conversation I told her I knew she would be disappointed in me because like most parents she wanted all her kids to grow up, get married and have a family. Not to mention she's very religious and has made extremely homophobic comments in the past. But I reassured her I have to come out because I don't want to lie to everyone anymore and most importantly, to myself. I'm already 26 and if I'm not being honest to myself now, I'll probably never will. Towards the end of the conversation, my mom started to understand and hoped that I will take care of myself well. I called my mom a week later and she said she already told the rest of my family. It felt like a huge burden off my chest and I'm so glad that I was able to do it. Next I hope I will be able to come out to my colleagues and friends. |
