QUOTE(kanzakicyn @ Aug 14 2013, 12:11 AM)
just curious, how to see if a school is a paper will (aka 3rd tier) university? any site?
*
go to any mba ranking site and search for top 100, if your school isnt in it, it is a mill lor...

top 50-100 is ok, top 50 is good, top 10 is better

QUOTE(zheng88 @ Aug 14 2013, 12:16 AM)
Forget the MBA and concentrate on your job, if you want to further yourself enroll in MOOCs that are free rather than spend hard earned savings and not get the traction in your career later. Problem is there are abundant MBAs around, especially those with MBA and PhDs from Iran, Pakistan and Bangladesh all looking for jobs in the Klang Valley. Do you want to compete with them? Their asking salary is around RM2,000 a month for a PhD from a local uni along Jln Semarak.
*
those are mills, as good as printing a greeting card for you... although iranian and pakistani schools are some very good in certain areas but certainly not producing mba

QUOTE(mugenz @ Aug 14 2013, 01:24 AM)
Based on?

I think you know that most ranking you can find thru web is based on research but not teaching?

I was told that not all high ranked uni based on research is good based on teaching. And most of these uni as govt linked thus the funds they get to do research thus the ranking.

Not too sure how relevant is ranking based on research affect the MBA quality. Layman like me will think research is only good for PhD studies
How true issit?
*
you're partially right... but instead of going for uni ranking, go for b-school or mba prog rankings.. most mba progs structure it towards understanding fundamentals, case studies and execution exercises... as for research, there're hardly any research going on unless you're taking phd or dba

You will need an MBA if you want to move to the C-level.
*
depending on industry and what do u mean by c-level... not all companies have mba holders at the top

QUOTE(joejee @ Aug 14 2013, 08:52 AM)
Yes, MBA is too common nowadays. But it may become a minimum job requirement in future.
*
mba from mills yes, mba grad from a top school? still rather rare in msia.. nah, unless you're into consultancy if not a mba wouldnt be needed as a min req

QUOTE(mugenz @ Aug 14 2013, 09:27 AM)
Thanks!

Another question about MQA certified MBA. I am a degree holder but my colleague he only got Diploma but he have the sufficient working experience to qualify for MBA.

But i was told that even if he complete the MBA he still is not MQA certified. Coz he doesnt have 1st degree as required by MQA.

Kind of confusing for me.
*
MQA? who cares if he grads from a good b-school..

QUOTE(mugenz @ Aug 14 2013, 10:25 PM)
It does if any individual got the intention to teach or do a local PhD
*
well, to most people that intend to take a mba wouldnt have no intention to teach in the first place..

QUOTE(mugenz @ Aug 14 2013, 10:27 PM)
Mind suggest the b schools or 2nd tier uni that is in malaysia? As in the program is available in malaysia.
*
used to have manchester business school @ sunway but i think they stop offering it already.. besides that i think there're a few local gov unis offering 3rd tier mbas... cant rmb which one, usm um ukm?

QUOTE(fino_abama @ Aug 14 2013, 11:22 PM)
Huh? You mean you're asking me what C-level refers to?
*
to diff people it means diff things... so far not many companies value mba grads within the asian region besides singapore for c-level...

QUOTE(zheng88 @ Aug 14 2013, 11:42 PM)
Sad to say with the dumbing down of qualifications, one would need postdoctoral for any decent job, not an MBA. Qualificatons keep on getting degraded and people keep on trying to upgrade, the paper chase will never end and it is a rather futile and pointless exercise of ambition.
*
not exactly... d problem arises when there're too many degree mills around... offering dubious papers that sound the same..

Applied once to them for a PhD, it took 6 months for them to reply. So really it shows that they care so much that you lose interest in the program which seems like a real joke.  cry.gif
*
well, no incentive to work hard... lay on their ass still get salary, work hard still get salary.. no performance measurement and indicators.. msia uni doh.gif

QUOTE(zheng88 @ Aug 15 2013, 12:56 AM)
Sad to say, degree mills are degree mills, but when accredited unis around the world commit scandalous acts like charging you continuous fees irrespective of whether you pass or not is down right unethical and immoral. There are plenty of accredited unis around commiting all sorts of scams. They are suppose to be legitimate but don't really care what they do. One from down under even commit fraud and later teach it. rclxub.gif
*
errr, any examples? i doubt any tier one uni would do that...

QUOTE(zheng88 @ Aug 15 2013, 01:01 AM)
Frankly, MIM use to be a good place to do an MBA but because certain parties got jealous and envious its position and running of the programs were later halted. When news got round that they wanted to hold a DBA, certain authoritarian figures made sure all ambitions were ceased. MIM really tried to be the Harvard of the country only to be told that licenses weren't going to be given.
*
what's mim?

QUOTE(mugenz @ Aug 15 2013, 11:14 AM)
thanks. But just curious,

Do you have a Master ?
If yes, which Uni/B School?

Nowadays there are so many providing Masters. Like other forum, even well recognized ones are not up to their reputation as well.

So ? doh.gif
*
graduating end of this year... rclxm9.gif

no a mba though... uni of adelaide

well, so far i find mine value for money... took a few short cuts to lower the fees too

Well , none of the school listed in the top 100 business school is offered in Malaysia. Just pick one that is relatively better ranking university which is offered in Malaysia. SBS is relatively better ranking if compared with USQ , University of Ballarat , University of Victoria , Anglica Ruskin University smile.gif  and the pricing is within affordability
*
true also.. you have a point...

I could not agree more. We need to perform cost-benefit analysis. If you want those listed in top 100, only the following MBAs offered in Malaysia:
1)Nottingham University Business School (58k)
2) Lancaster University Management School (going to be offered by Sunway in 2014), aint cheap by the way
3) Strathclyde, University of – Business School  (>70k)

If money does not matter to you, you can choose the one with highest ranking of course.
*
i believe around one year of your income is reasonable..

QUOTE(manpirLo @ Aug 25 2013, 09:15 AM)
can u double check which exactly university they offer. If i'm not mistaken The University of Sydney, The University of Sydney Business School is acknowledged by accsb. INTI college just offer University of Wollongong, Australia.

for reference,

http://www.mbaworld.com/
http://www.aacsb.edu/accreditation/accreditedmembers.asp
https://www.efmd.org/index.php/accreditatio...redited-schools

thumbup.gif
*
i check that earlier already.... that's why i mentioned it is lowly ranked, anyway... since choices not widely avail in msia... wat 2 do

in this region, not many economies can appreciate such qualification... only in sg... but chicago buss school just moved to hk too...

if we talk about value for $$$ and job prospects, i think those offered in sg is worth it..

QUOTE(GMBA @ Aug 27 2013, 02:19 AM)
Some great news just to hand- Sunway University can confirm that they will be offering a Global MBA in partnership with Lancaster University from early 2014. Lancaster University is a highly ranked UK university with triple accreditation for the GMBA. That's AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA accrediting the quality of the program! No one in Malaysia can beat that!  It looks like a great program with foreign professors,  flexibility with multiple locations to study (Singapore,  Jordon, UK etc) and scholarships.
*
do update us with the fees... seems ok, although would prefer Manchester

QUOTE(paintballtao @ Aug 28 2013, 01:04 AM)
how sad. was planning to do mba at insead and they are moving to hk !!!!!

Hmm... considering the INSEAD EMBA? That way, U get to travel around the world whilst completing your programme smile.gif  But if it's too expensive, then just do the INSEAD MBA instead tongue.gif
*
just as exp ler...

manchester nus ntu smu would be a better choice... if wanna go lower can consider strathclyde or bradford

@alaskanbunny,
What's your budget?  Also, what is your motivation for doing an MBA? When you do a more "expensive" MBA, your networking opens up...
*
hahaha.. i am already doing a master course and taking a professional paper at the same time... dont think i got time for mba anymore ler... hahahaha, going to prevent myself from attending anything for 2014... suffered too much these 2 years

QUOTE(joejee @ Aug 29 2013, 09:14 AM)
Is MBA ranking really that important? I believe in future MBA become so common that employers do not care about which business schools you came from, unless those super top MBA like Harvard. Just like degree nowadays.

If you are ambitious, go for average MBA, save the money for other professional qualification like ACCA, CPA, CFA. Just my opinion.
*
in msia, top mbas are not appreciated as the economy has not matured to that point... the larger cap coys in msia are either owned by traditional chinese family with some being cronies or GLCs that are filled with bumis, no offence but affirmative action reduces competition...

QUOTE(fino_abama @ Aug 29 2013, 09:58 AM)
INSEAD > Manchester, nus, NTU, smu...
*
my ceo and a guy working with me in the same team have MBAs from insead... hahahahaa, both so so only in their work performance... but of course they make more than me la.. only my cfo from LSE is able to show that he really knows his stuff

insead diff league from those la... but the rest are considered top institutions for mbas as well... look out for the sg schools they are going to be among the top soon

@timeonce,
Didn't I read it elsewhere the Lancaster MBA is only coming in Y2014?  Nevertheless, no harm calling up to check.

The other not too bad, Australian programme would be from INTI; either the UOW MBA or the University of Sydney MBA.  I think the latter is higher ranked.
*
i think u made a mistake quoting uni of sydney... it is sydney buss school which is from uni of wollongong

lol... i think you would suffer more with mba, or at least if you take your mba from a good school.. cfa is just passing exams, mba involves assg n pjts which takes up even more time...

and there's no one round la... it involves several papers
